Subject: Dan Rather considered crazy?

In a 2000 episode of Family Guy (BEFORE Rather was fired), Peter says to Brian, "lots of crazy people have gone on to lead normal, successful lives." Then it cuts to a picture of Dan Rather. I don't get the joke. Was Dan Rather considered crazy back in the late 90s/00s? Can someone explain the joke? Please?
