Subject: Toon Disney 20th Anniversary
Written By: mqg96 on 04/18/18 at 10:39 pm
I was in classes most of the day and this didn't pop up on my feed until I get home late a night. But today (April 18, 2018) officially marks 20 years since Toon Disney first launched. The late 90's was around the time Saturday Morning cartoons were officially transitioning over to 24 hour kid stations, and the launch of Toon Disney was part of it which had 24 hours of Disney animated shows and movies from the beginning of Walt Disney up to present (at the time). The network was dedicated to reruns of Disney Afternoon cartoons such as DuckTales, Tale Spin, Goof Troop, Timon & Pumbaa, Aladdin: The Series, and Gargoyles, One Saturday Morning cartoons (not until 2001/02) such as House of Mouse, Recess, The Weekenders, Sabrina: TAS, Lloyd In Space, and Pepper Ann, and syndicated shows such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Madeline, and New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh including those owned by Disney in general. Toon Disney showed classic movies, Renaissance movies, and Pixar movies on their Friday Night Movie/Double Feature Friday block and they had cool blocks such as "Hangin' with the Heroes", "Chilln' With the Villains", "Princess Power Hour", "Magical World of Toons", and much more!
From 1998-2001 it was just Disney Afternoon cartoons and syndicated shows, then in late 2001 and 2002 One Saturday Morning cartoons were added to the lineup right before the rebrand for the 2nd era from 2002-2004 which was my favorite design. This was the golden age of the network IMO. Then in 2004 the Jetix block came and everything changed, but the first year and a half Jetix was around Toon Disney was still pretty good, but after a while by late 2005 and 2006 Jetix started taking over 75% or more of Toon Disney's schedule while the rest of Toon Disney's programming ended up being cartoons that you could already see on Disney Channel itself. Jetix was a great block, don't get me wrong. I loved Jetix too because of its Power Ranger shows (especially Dino Thunder and S.P.D.) and I enjoyed all of their Marvel cartoons from FOX too such as Spider-Man: TAS and X-Men: TAS, but Jetix was the cause of Toon Disney's death in the long run. Once 2008 came along when Suite Life of Zack & Cody reruns were added to the network the network was really dead by then as they were preparing for Disney XD by 2009. Anyways, I could list so many animated shows I enjoyed from this network. Brings back a lot of good memories! At the bottom I have a bunch of random links of rare Toon Disney commercial breaks, bumpers, and promos!
1st era: Spring 1998 - Summer 2002
(Pretty much the golden era of Toon Disney. No brainer here. You had everything. All the Disney Afternoon animated shows and the syndicated shows you could think of. Plus classic Mickey Mouse shorts as well.)

2nd era: Fall 2002 - Summer 2004
(My favorite era and design! This is when the One Saturday Morning animated shows joined the lineup along with the Disney Afternoon shows already around! Take note this logo technically came in Fall 2001 but the era didn't start until Fall 2002, so between Fall 2001 and Summer 2002 this logo was mixed with the previous logo! The early months of Jetix is included in this era too!)

3rd era: Fall 2004 - Summer 2005
(This era of Toon Disney was probably the even hybrid between good Toon Disney programming and golden Jetix programming. This was the start of Toon Disney's decline, but the lineup was still really good. The One Saturday Morning shows were still around, but the majority of Disney Afternoon shows and syndicated shows were leaving throughout this time. Disney Channel cartoons started entering the lineup)

4th era: Fall 2005 - Winter 2009
(The beginning of the end for my beloved network. Jetix continued to thrive, but Toon Disney was nothing but Disney Channel cartoons that could already been seen on Disney Channel itself and the leftover Disney Afternoon/One Saturday Morning cartoons. Jetix had pretty much taken over 80% of Toon Disney's space. Later in this era Phineas & Ferb and Suite Life of Zack & Cody entered the lineup as they were preparing for the Disney XD rebrand in 2009.)

to be honest with you no one really had Toon Disney
Most people including myself had Disney & Abc Family but not toon disney because you had to get an expanded pack which was like 25 dollars more.
Moving JETIX to Toon Disney only in 2006 ruined the brand

It's not that nobody had Toon Disney, but it was tough to get just like the Nickelodeon sister stations and Boomerang (sister of Cartoon Network), but out of all of the sister networks, Toon Disney was definitely the most common one (at least in my area). It was more likely you'd have Toon Disney than Nicktoons, Noggin/The N, and Nick Gas. The doctors office in my area always had Toon Disney on when you walked in, and this was throughout my entire childhood. Boomerang was the hardest to get out of all the sister stations.
Jetix didn't move to Toon Disney in 2006. Jetix was a block that was added to Toon Disney in 2004, but throughout 2005 more and more Jetix time was added to Toon Disney and by 2006 Jetix had taken up over 80% of Toon Disney's schedule. Jetix was also on ABC Family but I never watched it on there.

Jetix left Abc Family in 2006, As soon as it moved off ABC family that network started to suck.
Bomerang sucks now its not even HD

Oh boy!
You know this a topic that's very dear to my heart. I'd love to contribute right now, but I'm kind of busy. In the meantime, I'll link a retrojunk article I made a year ago about this topic:

BTW I'll be a lot more free in the summer, so I'm actually going to be writing a few more retrojunk articles if you guys are interested!

Damn! I've never seen this article before, and you put a lot of thought and detail into the history of Toon Disney. You even brought up stuff I even forgot! Excellent job bro!

Indeed it was... it brought back some memories for me! Particularly my 'Disney Afternoon' memories from the early 90's.
Too bad it got taken over in the late 2000s and then flipped to DisneyXD. :-[ :\'(
I'd sure like to see some of those prgms again sometime.

Yep, I definitely agree.
Cartoons nowadays just aren't the same.

That's right, I usually prefer the "classic" ones.

Me too.
Even though for me, "classic" cartoons for me are the ones from the 1990s and 2000s that I grew up with.
Cartoons like Tom & Jerry are the ultimate definition of classic and I consider those to be "vintage/old school" cartoons.

I understand; mainly I am referring to the ones that were around long before then. I would have used the term "vintage/old school" but I guess I didn't think of it right away. Even Disney had some that could be classified that way.

Oh, that's fine. I was just clarifying.
