For me it was the 2006-2007 year

2007-2008. The peak for late 2000's culture. The 2008-2009 school year was the transitional school year from the 2000's to early 2010's.

2008-2009 felt like the last. The last year no one had a smartphone (except like the 2 or 3 rich kids). 2007-2008 was the last "pure" one though, that's peak flip phone, MSN and iPod era.
2009-2010 was an early 2010s school year through and through. If people didn't have an iPhone (which plenty of people did), they had an iPod Touch and people chatted on Facebook instead of MSN (although I do remember using MSN to organize a group project in spring 2010).

I was in preschool by the end of the 2000s
My first school year was the 2009-2010 school year.

It just felt late 2000's to me. The Wii was at its peak and music was pretty late 2000's by that point. Myspace was still pretty popular that school year.

Mid 2000's with Late 2000's influences.
2006-2007:
Late 2000's with Mid 2000's influences.
2007-2008:
Ultimate Late 2000's year.
2008-2009:
Late 2000's/Early 2000's transitional year.
2009-2010:
Early 2010's with Late 2000's influences.
2010-2011:
Ultimate Early 2010's year.

I got into high school in late 2006 so I think I know what you mean. There was jumping from middle school into high school and that culture/technological shift that came with it as well. :o
But even with that's said, 2007 still felt very 2000s. The last year rap was huge (before electropop would take over), last year of flared and baggy jeans, and the social attitude in general is very 2000s. Watch the movie Superbad, to me 2007-2008 school year was like that.

2007 in a nutshell still felt like the 2000s, but you could feel changes were coming, RAP was huge in 2007, Timbaland was EVERYWHERE this year and apologzie by One Republic, I remember so vividly lol
I never liked Superbad, for me it was like the new wave of comedys and did not mesh at all with the likes of American Pie 2, Mean girls , White Chicks

2007 marked the end of the core 00's, IMO and 2008 marked the beginning of a watering down/transitional phase. 2007-08 was the last school year that had a strong 00's feel.

I have stated this before, as someone who was a teen then, As early as January/Feb 2007 you could feel thing changing and it kept happening well into 2008.

Yep same here. Auto tune was becoming more and more popular and the music more electronic. I think the Obama election & the economic crash of '08 sort of distorted the degree of change. If you remove those, it doesn't seem as abrupt. Another factor is that I graduated high school and began college in '09, so it felt like an even bigger change than it probably was.

The difference is so obvious. When I first came on here you all had me believing that 2008 was not 2000s at all ;D But tbh everyday I get more and more convinced that the 2010s were completely absent in 2008.

The difference is so obvious. When I first came on here you all had me believing that 2008 was not 2000s at all ;D But tbh everyday I get more and more convinced that the 2010s were completely absent in 2008.
I think the main reasons why people think 2008 was the start of early 2010's culture, especially late 2008, is because Obama got elected and it was the first year Lady Gaga released a song, whom would be very popular in the early 2010's. 2008 was also the very first year Drake had songs, and he's still a very big artist now. The app store was released in July 2008 and completely changed the way we use our smartphones today. But 2008 had too many 2000's aspects for it to be considered early 2010's IMO. Even though we got new artists, these artists weren't really very popular until 2009. 2008 was still a Myspace year and Emo/Scene were still being worn. Even though the iPhone was already out by then, it was very expensive and the fact that the recession was going on at the time didn't really make alot of people want to buy one. A lot of people still had blackberry or flip phones. The music from 2008 was very different was the music from 2011. Here's two examples:

And I think you did a very good job at explaining the difference between 2008 and the actual early 2010's through music and pictures. I think many people tend to over exaggerate how early 2010's 2008 was. I can actually understand why people would say 2009 is early 2010's culturally, but with 2008, I really don't see how, to be honest.

Yeah but as I've mentioned I see the core 2000s ending in 2006 with the first half of the decade being the classic 2000s and 2006 starting the modern 2000s period which was something quite different. In the late 2000s so much has changed in technology and stuff.

I honestly still don't get what's the early 2010s about 2008 ??? It was the late 2000s. You all either don't remember 2008 or the early 2010s.

The difference is so obvious. When I first came on here you all had me believing that 2008 was not 2000s at all ;D But tbh everyday I get more and more convinced that the 2010s were completely absent in 2008.
I think the main reasons why people think 2008 was the start of early 2010's culture, especially late 2008, is because Obama got elected and it was the first year Lady Gaga released a song, whom would be very popular in the early 2010's. 2008 was also the very first year Drake had songs, and he's still a tremendous artist now. The app store was released in July 2008 and completely changed the way we use our smartphones today. But 2008 had too many 2000's aspects for it to be considered early 2010's IMO. Even though we got new artists, these artists weren't trendy until 2009. 2008 was still a Myspace year, and most people wore Emo/Scene. Even though the iPhone was already out by then, it was costly and the fact that the recession was going on at the time didn't make a lot of people want to buy one. A lot of people still had a blackberry or flip phone. The music from 2008 was very different was the music from 2011. Here are two examples:

It's because most people tend to only look at music, social media, and technology while also forgetting the other elements that make-up pop culture such as movies, fashion, politics, etc. 2008 (and even '09) was broadly worlds away from the early 10s. Yeah, there may have been bright colored styles, but there also was Emo, hip-hop, preppy, Ed Hardy, etc. which were relevant at that time. In cinema, there was still comedies like Sex Drive, American Pie 7, College Road Trip, Wild Child, Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, HSM 3, Step Up 2, 17 Again, I Love You Beth Cooper, Precious, Fired Up, etc. In the late 00s, the LGBT was still universally not accepted by most people as well as fewer people were being upset by a single joke or action. Then film companies were predominantly Pixar, Dreamworks, and the Harry Potter franchise, not the Marvel Cinematic Universe or live-action fantasy reboot craze. For TV, there was the Office, Lost, 24; as well as Everybody Hates Chris, My name is Earl, Reno 911!, The L Word and Prison Break. Even if we witnessed Obama making history, the Afghanistan and Iraq wars were still ongoing. The economy was even somewhat decent to until late 2008 when then it became a massive dump. The last thing, the Kardashian clan, were not superstars yet despite already having their show by then. Paris Hilton and Tila Tequila were the main stars for fashion and reality TV especially that Tila herself did not have any controversy yet until the feud with Shawn Merriman in September 2009. All these components That I listed is what separates 2008 and ’09 from the early 10s. Oh, and I certainly agree with both of you. It’s honestly strange how people don’t seem to remember the late 00s and or the early 10s anymore, and they weren’t even that long ago!

It's not that, the whole 2000s vibe was going away as early as 2007 as I have described earlier, There were things like the 2000s fashions that stayed in 2008/2009 and TRL and Toonami, but they were on their last legs at this point, its just that they were all wiped out at once that really puts the stamp on when the 2000s feeling ended.
IE: The 2000s feeling/vibe was fleeting as early as 2007, by the time we got to 2008 things felt different even before the whole late 2008 shift

Naw, 2007-2008 school year was completely 2000s. Flip/slider phones, people carrying around iPods, blasting that dumb Soulja Boy song from their cellphones, talking to our friends on MSN, kids asking people to follow their blog, Donald Trump a reality TV star, Windows XP still by far the dominant OS etc. You're NOT stepping into high school in 2007-2008 and thinking anything but "I'm in the 2000s".
Silly to assume everything that happened in June 2005 or whatever is 'peak 2000s' and anything that differs from it is 'not 2000s'. Britney Spears shaving her head is a 2000s thing, the celebrity meltdown obsession is a 2000s thing, Soulja Boy is a 2000s thing. Just because it didn't happen in 2005 doesn't mean it's not 2000s. That's like me saying 2014-2015 is the last 2010s school year because Bieber hadn't become serious yet.
