For me I would say may/june 2005

2005.

2005 or 2006 since they're in the middle. But I vote 2005 because I believe 2005 > 2006.

From the movies I watched, most movies set in 2002-2006 and 2007 to a lesser extent seemed to scream '2000s' most to me.

If I was making the movie myself and trying to make it stereotypically 2000s as possible, it would most likely be set in either 2006 or 2003 depending on what I was going for.

I probably say 2002/3-2006. Those years to me scream 2000s.

Iraq was still relevant until Osama Bin Laden was killed in 2011, and people were growing weary of Bush later on. I'd pick 2006, thanks to that big shift that happened later that year technologically. 9/11 was still fresh enough to be relevant, VHS was basically dead but most people still had them with Blu-Ray the new format, but with Netflix just a mailing service, flatscreen TV's now dominant at electronic stores but with many still having a tube TV, social media like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter was brand new or almost new while core trends like Myspace were at their peak. You'd have the inflating phase of the housing bubble, the mini-energy crisis burgeoning with higher gas prices, musical trends like Emo, Hyphy, and Snap Rap at their peak, the shift from the sixth to seventh generation of gaming, and a bunch of random movies and TV shows (mostly reality TV) that were popular around then.

2005 without a doubt. Filled with Myspace, emo kids, crunk rap, Hurricane Katrina, and an anti-Bush/anti-Iraq War mood.

That’s true, actually the fashion of the characters is very 2015. They did a terrible job focusing on details.

I’d choose early 2000’s (2000), maybe a movie based on the change of millennium with a college atmosphere

If I had to choose a specific year, 2004.

Yeah, 2004 seems to me like the most stereotypical 2000s year, away with the 90s vestiges but still strongly connected with the early years as well as the later ones.
