Subject: Late 2000s - Best era for internet culture?

Written By: Slim95 on 02/03/18 at 9:51 pm

I feel like the late 2000s period was the best time for the internet. It wasn't too primitive so you had access to everything yet it wasn't so advanced that it became a corporate money-making machine in comparison to today. So many classic internet memes came from this era and so many fun internet websites and games were popular. This was also when so many geeks were using the internet for fun reasons rather than normal people for political reasons. Also smartphones weren't the primary way to access the internet during this time, your computer was. Sure social media was around but it was used more for for fun rather than a necessity like today. YouTube was also the best at this time and the golden years of YouTube was 2007 - 2009. I have some nostalgia for internet culture during the late 2000s now and feel like it was the best era of the internet.

IMO YouTube was at its golden age in like 2009. I remember when they had that star rating and the logo said "broadcast yourself" I remember looking up tutorial cheats for club penguin back then and almost every video had this song:

I love that song it brings back memories. Also remember how every tutorial video had someone typing on Notepad with a Windows XP background making spelling errors and correcting it with that song in the background? Good times.  ;D

Yes! I remember that and almost all the tutorials had that notepad and they were saying something like "Hi guys today I'll show you...." *deletes sentence* "How to do this cheat"

2007-2010 is when I was first on the internet. I have lots of nostalgia for it too.

I wasn't on it much until late 2008 or so, though I remember Wikipedia, game reviews, Encyclopedia Dramatica, Myspace, juggalos, emos, furries, trolls laughing at them, DeviantArt, Youtube was still quite small...

Then in late 2008, because my cartoons were starting to go away, I started to go on the internet more. I went on a um...certain forum and became a troll king (unintentionally, since I was just having fun and wanting to talk about my favorite thing in the world, later on I actually came back in 2014 and found out that after I had gone, more trolls had come up and were being blamed as me <o_O>) until I was chased off, and around 2009 I started to watch more and more Youtube (Crazy Stickfigure Randomness, mark3611 Youtube poops, Hoopsanddinoman, Nigahiga, Dcigs, Potter Puppet Pals, Charlie the Unicorn, Llamas with Hats, Salad Fingers, those creepy maze videos where there's a maze then at the end something'd pop out at you, Cute Mario Bros., Mario and Luigi's Stupid and Dumb Adventures, Adamwestlapdog, BLACKBusterCritic, all the dinosaur/character tributes with music in the background...). It was like my MTV.

So many other sites too, like there was one scary games site I loved, though I can't find it anymore, so many database sites, sites for everything.

2007-2010 is probably the Golden Age of the Internet. It's classic, memorable, and where the current Internet is based off of.

2008-2012 were the best 4 years for the internet ever. Youtube was so fun before it became a legit business.

I agree with you.  The best era for Internet culture was roughly 2005 through around 2012 in my opinion.  I would say it peaked around 2008 and 2009 (the era of autotuned viral videos).  I think it started going downhill once everything went HD and also when everything became designed primarily for smart devices instead of computers.  Internet culture still exists today but it isn't the same as it was back then.

I agree with this. I definitely miss the old YouTube especially back in 2009-2012. I miss when YouTube channels looked like this:

YouTube was still interesting though at that point, and things like AIM and forums weren't completely dead yet.  Facebook was mostly the realm of young people and was actually cool.  I still used AIM regularly as late as 2009 and slowly stopped using it until stopping completely in 2012.

I agree with that. YouTube was interesting in its heyday. It just became the focus of the internet by the late 2000s that made internet culture by then, basically YouTube.

Yeah, the MSN, flash games, blog and forum era was my favourite era of the Internet. Chilling and playing iSketch or Habbo Hotel with my friends and having an m MSN video chat with them afterwards. Everyone at school had a blog and they were a million times more interesting than Facebook ever was.

The flash games were out sometime in 2008, blogs became less popular around 2012ish, forums started to die out in the early 2010s and MSN died in late 2009.

The cool thing about 2006/2007 is that even though we had YouTube, it wasn't all-consuming just yet. We still got dedicated websites for different hobbies e.g. GameTrailers for video games. I miss that website.

2004 Internet feels very empty though, because Wikipedia wasn't popular yet. It also just literally felt smaller (because it actually was). I think it picked up around 2005. That is a solid Internet year. YouTube  wasn't popular yet but we had dedicated hobby websites for those things.

I remember using AIM till Skype came along and after that AIM went out of business.

As a kid in late 00s, I remember FB was basically quizzes, flash games and fanpages back then. Nowadays users are really addicted to the Home Page with its stupid marketing strategies, actually Late 2000s Facebook seems pretty much to old MySpace than current FB

From a personal standpoint I did love early and mid '00s internet the most but in general the famous memes that are still talked about today originated from the late 2000s so the late '00s was a special time for the internet.

I prefer this one as well. Either way it would be somewhat annoying when someone set the video on their homepage to autoplay.

I do miss when forums were popular (they're so dead now) and when people were less divisive but I still prefer today's internet because it is easily accessible. I hated having to use the internet from a desk or laptop all the time. Now all I need is a phone.

2005 "memes" are such an established part of Internet culture that they aren't even considered memes anymore. Think things like "facepalm" and "lol wut". Those were huge memes back then.

I'd say the early 2010s was better. The late 00s was nostalgic, but primitive and limited in what you could do.

Plus the memes/YTPs were kinda juvenile.

Making websites was more fun around 2008. It was possible for everybody to design a site looking original, with a not-so-standard structure, ánd working properly at all common screen types. Fixed widths were still o.k., so many sites were a kind of a puzzle, consisting of many (sometimes strangely shaped) parts. On your screen, which still belonged to a regular computer/laptop, it came perfectly together.

Now, it has to look good on about 1001 screen sizes. Designing unconventional looking sites, working well with every possible screen size, is nearly rocket science. This is one of the reasons sites are looking basic and clean, nowadays (mine too, while my 00s sites were quite unconventional). That's still achievable for everybody.

This was the era for sure!

I spent my teens on internet forums because I didn't have any sort of "real" life back then.

It's so hard to believe it was all 10-12 years ago.

Yeah, I feel like I'd be happy to just wake up anywhere between 2006-2010 and be that young kid again.

Maybe that would be my own personal heaven...
