2007 was the very first year of my core childhood.
I remember that year clearly. I started Kindergarten that year. These pics do bring back nostalgia especially the Wii

Man, do I miss that world and being in my early twenties like I was then. The dude in pic 7 is smoking hot. It's hard to believe that we are ten years removed from that world.

I agree. It felt very different compared to today. 2007 was also a good year for music IMO

Obviously this is a decade ago, but I find the 1997 to 2007 change to be larger as obviously it was more critical for my coming of age, of which 2007 was the tail end of (I graduated college and started my job that year, which I just celebrated my 10th anniversary). It does rose tint some elements, as cellphone use (flip phones, of course!) was already pretty common, and I don't see anyone with an MP3 player, which certainly were around. The graphic design certainly was different then as it was in both 1997 and today, with the "new releases" at the Blockbuster a lingering font that was popular in the '90s that you don't see much of today. That year was arguably the peak of Millenial adolescent culture IMO (though I'm early Millenial and see the Y2K era as my peak). Sure, it's dated from a 2017 perspective, but of course will always feel "contemporary" to 1997.

Holy...that does make me feel old! I was 17 back then. Surely, you are too young for nostalgia?
:D
Mind you, I think back then I was nostalgic for the 90s.
Never thought I would be looking back nostalgiacally on the 00s at the time.
It's all about perspective I guess. To me, all that looks kinda modern, but not 2017 modern.
It's like the start of how things look today.
If I could go back to a year it would be 2007 and to be 17 again, just like in the movie!
I don't know, it doesn't seem long ago at all. Those pictures look like they could've been taken today. I guess it makes sense, 1997 didn't seem old at all to me in 2007 either. I'll probably feel the same about 2017 in 2027. :-X
I must say, 1997 seemed like another world to me in 2007. So archaic considering it was just 10 years ago to 2007.
But like you, 2007 doesn't seem that old to me either.
I feel like there is a lot more of a difference between 1997 and 2007 than 2007 and 2017.
Damn that fashion is really dated from a 2017 perspective
Heh, I still wear the same basic stuff. I think the last of my clothes from back then went a few years ago, but the new stuff I wear is basically the same anyway!
I was never really into fashion, more a tee and jeans kinda guy. And a hoodie top if it's cold.
So I guess I don't notice that much.
Wow, 10 years seem so damn long ago and everything was so different back then. :o
What do you notice mainly? I guess the tech is more separated than it is nowadays. Fashion, a bit more plain maybe. But apart from that it still looks pretty relatable.
Not sure why I feel compelled to post this stuff, but I think there are some things that are significant and attract my attention.
Like Rainbow talking about 2007 being her "core childhood" years was kinda jarring! I always assume everyone on here is kinda my age ;) That's what it feels like to get old I guess!

I disagree. If your personal life was drastically different 7 or even 4 years ago, then it’s still possible to be nostalgic. Yes, you can even be nostalgic for something last year. As long as it’s in the past.

Waist belts are 2000s thing
you have a pic of a girl in typical 2000s emo wear
then you have a bunch of colors that scream 2000s
the make up on the girl with the yellow screams 2000s, heavy light blue eye shadow is a 2000s thing

This is exactly how I feel as well. I graduated college in December 2007 and started my first real job in January 2008 so I am approaching the one decade mark. I definitely miss that era and wish I could go back and do some things differently.
Slim95 will argue how different the late '00s were from the early '00s, but I think a lot of that is due to his age. I think somebody born ten years earlier might see the '90s as less transformative than the '80s. In my opinion, age 13 through 18 is one of the most transformative times of life (18-25 also is but to a lesser degree) no matter the pop culture. With this in mind, when you are a young adult pop culture from your pre-teen years and before feels very different compared to the culture during your teen years and into your twenties.

These pictures actually look quite dated to me. Very removed from today, not so much resolution wise but the fashion and content of the pictures don't look like they fit in today at all. Although I agree photos from the early 2010s would not look very dated and look like they can be taken today, but these pictures from 2007 look quite old.

I was 12 years old in 2007, I started middle school and '07 was truly the best time of my life. I found my first love that year and it was on this chick in my French class and was crushing on her hard. Man the nostalgia is really strong. 2007 honestly feels like a different world from now. Many things from that year are extremely dated now and that year is overall quite old.

I feel like there is a lot more of a difference between 1997 and 2007 than 2007 and 2017.
I think if you look at a pic from 1997 and compare it to 2007 now, it looks completely different. But if you went back to 2007, seeing people wear clothes from 1997 was still very ordinary and it didn't look old at all. If it was 2007 again and this thread was about 1997, I think there will be quite a few people like us who would be saying "it looks the same as today" ;D
That's an interesting question, whether the difference between 1997 and 2007 or 2007 is 2017 is greater. I think the difference is just as big between the two. I remember 2007 as being a largely pre-social media/instant information and pre-smartphone year, and I still had an SDTV, that makes it sound hella old. But there was a lot about the year that was modern too, like having YouTube and online console gaming.
I had internet in 1997 though. For people who see 1997 as a pre-Internet and pre-cellphone kind of year, I can see why the difference between 1997 and 2007 seems much larger.
Heh, I still wear the same basic stuff. I think the last of my clothes from back then went a few years ago, but the new stuff I wear is basically the same anyway!
I still have some clothes from 2006/2007 too that I wear every now and then. My favourite shirts from then have hit the dust though. :\'( When I burnt my favourite teenage shirt (from 2007) on the iron a couple of years back I wanted to beat the living crap out of myself. >:(

No 2008 was the transitional year, not 2009. Although the 2008 - 2009 school year can be said to be transitional too. 2007 was still late 2000s, but not quite the classic 2000s feel anymore and the mid '00s were gone by then too. Neither '07 or '08 (even '06) felt truly 100% 2000s though. One '06 came, it was not 100% 2000s anymore. 2005 was the peak year of the 2000s and can be said to be the quintessential year of the 2000s too.

Yeah, it's definitely from 2012. If one were to look at the photo much closely, there are flyers of Black Ops 2, New Super Mario Bros 2, the 3DS and a $148 160 GB hard drive of the 3rd PS3. For one, the Call of Duty series wasn't even that popular in 2007, and the PS3 was barely out that year with the price being $500-600, and the highest HDs being -60-80 GB. Plus, the 3DS itself didn't even exist yet and was a few more years away. Good eye-sight SlowPoke. I must have missed those things when I first saw the picture.

I think all of them are from the same year the OP posted them. There's no evidence it is from a different year. But I'm not entirely sure.
It literally says 2012 in the image URL lol. Even if it didn't, there's a 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros. 2 (with an "out now!" suggesting that it's recent). These two came out August 19, 2012 in North America.
And yeah, PS3 was $600 in 2007. It was infamous for its price, that's why it flopped. $150 is the price it dropped towards the end of its lifecycle.
edit: actually, on zooming in, the fine print says says $148 when you trade in your iPhone 4. Obviously, there was no iPhone 4 in 2007. Also that is a huge ripoff ;D

Damn! I didn't see that either you said it. Good job man once again! Oh, and other clues I found is that if you zoom in more in the middle, there is an Assassin Creed 3 column and a PC game section as well. One thing for sure is that there were no Assassin Creed games until the end of 2007, and there wasn't a section for PC games during that time either.

That PC game section does look weird to me. The last time I remember seeing PC games in video game stores was in 2005 or 2006. After that any sane person bought them from Steam. Upon further search, the photo is from Australia (I guess Steam didn't sell there? *shrugs*). The person took the photo after they found that there was no "SALE!" sign plastered everywhere. https://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/09/reddit-reader-finds-the-one-eb-in-australia-thats-not-having-a-sale/comment-page-2/

I'm not sure. Steam is available over here, of course (mind you, it only became popular around 2013/2014). A lot of people must still prefer to buy the games in-person, otherwise the stores wouldn't even sell them.

I might have to check. Last I remember, they only sold cards with codes that you use to download the game online. At that point, it's just easier to buy it online. ;D
edit: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1068574 According to this thread, physical copies are still popular in Europe, but in North America if you buy a physical box you'll only find a Steam code inside.

Well, if you both want to know, we did have physical copies of PC games back then; however, since steam became popular it has rendered the physical media useless and possibly the fact that not only do people play online on PCs, they play online on home consoles as well.

Call of Duty was HUGELY popular when 2007 came around. The hype for the fourth CoD game was IMMENSE and finally - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was released in November 2007 and it propelled the CoD franchise into the juggernaut blockbuster annual franchise that it is.

That's what I mean. The series became popular starting with Modern Warfare which wasn't out until November of that year. I would say for the first half of 2007, COD had no relevance in the mainstream despite that there were already three installments by then. Honestly, Halo 3 had more hype that year than Modern Warfare ever did.

Towards the end of the year, yeah. For most of the time, I don't think so. I don't remember anyone talking about COD3 during that period (which would have been the modern shooter of that series at that point). Besides, there are other things you might be forgetting. In 2007, most people had an Xbox 360 with wired connections since the wireless adapter was not built in until the S-models came out later. The majority didn't have a wireless internet box either and the PS3 during that time frame had the infamous high price. Plus, that same Xbox would have required folks to have an Xbox live gold membership in order to play online multiplayer (which is the most popular mode in COD aside from campaign). With all those factors included, there's no way that COD would have been popular that year until the end.

Nobody would have mentioned it as one of the biggest franchises in gaming. In most people's minds, it was just another WW2 shooter among many. But it was one of the most hyped games of the year.

I agree. I think the peak of the CoD craze was probably during the Black Ops era. At that time, it seemed like anybody and everybody who was into video games was playing either that or it's competitor, Battlefield 3.

Well you can only re-skin the same game so many times and expect people to continue shelling out $60 for it.
Call of Duty is also a prime example of what went wrong with gaming in the late '00s. In my opinion, CoD killed the first person shooter that I grew up with.

Yeah, that's what I meant when I said COD wasn't that popular during that timeframe. It may have been exciting at that time, but it wasn't on the superstar level like it is now until MW was released. Oh, and I'm glad you brought that up. What most people seem to forget is that the first 3 CODs were all about WW2. Then MW changed that to where the period was current whereas before shooters took place in the past.

I wouldn't say they were all rehashes. Aside from the typical WW2 shooters, there were a lot of FPSes during that time that was innovative in new directions and took groundbreaking risks that we don't see in today's game industry anymore.
While FPSs weren’t that original back then either, the gaming industry at large was still a lot more diverse than it is now.
Hell yeah! It was. It sucks how certain genres aren't popular like they used to be. I don't see that many RPGs, puzzle, racing, fighting, platformers, party games, etc. in the mainstream anymore. One would have to dig deeper to find those types of games these days.

Fine whatever. The WWII shooter was by far the most popular FPS setting from 1999-2005. That doesn't mean that there wasn't other genres of FPS that weren't popular.
Is that OK with you? Do you understand me now?

Yeah. I understand now. There's no denying that those types of shooters were well in demand during that period. Heck, I even played a few of them later on and it didn't bother me that the period was set in WW2
Oh, and I'm Sorry if I got you riled up with those posts. That wasn't my intent at all. I just wanted to make sure that we discuss the time frame in accurate details. No hard feelings man.

It's all good...I wasn't mad ;D. A bit frustrated that there was a misunderstanding but definitely NOT mad.
Cheers bro! :)

Yeah, the video games as a whole were progressing substantially but not so much when it comes to the FPS genre.
I agree.
Perhaps, it was just a misunderstanding.
You can't say "aside from the typical WW2 shooters" ;D. From 1999-2005, WWII shooter games had a stranglehold on the FPS genre (Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 were the only real competition) .
There definitely was an over-saturation of WWII shooters during that era. The first two Call of Duty installments were pretty much vanilla WWII shooters. On top of that, you had the Medal of Honor series (which was decent) and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. There was plenty of other stuff in that era as well though. Half Life, Half Life 2, Quake, Doom 3, FEAR, Painkiller, Far Cry, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, Star Wars Jedi Knight/Academy, etc, etc, etc. It was a great era for the FPS genre. Yes, WWII was a big part of it but there was so much more. Of course I was a PC gamer. I am not sure what it was like on the consoles. During that era, a gaming PC ran circles around an Xbox in performance and you still had PC-exclusive AAA games.

Here is my photo from 11 years ago, 2007. I had that bluetooth-ish thing on my ear! This is actually a polaroid of a photo shoot. I was wearing blue lipcolor and my blouse was all sparkly. I hate the look on my face though. ;D I was having so much fun but in this photo it looks like I wanted to get it over with!

In 2007 I remember I graduated elementary school and started junior high. It was a very eventful year and the best year of my life I would say.

Aren't PC games sold in video game stores in the US and Canada anymore? That's strange! :o They're still sold in video game stores here in Australia.
I remember seeing them much more recently in EB games than 2006. They're still sold in Toronto Walmart's and Best Buys.
Well you can only re-skin the same game so many times and expect people to continue shelling out $60 for it.
Call of Duty is also a prime example of what went wrong with gaming in the late '00s. In my opinion, CoD killed the first person shooter that I grew up with.
Precisely. There was never a period where I didn't care for the shooter genre more than the 7th gen period. They crowded out other genres, neglected the PC platform they originated on, and were generally oversaturated with short, mediocre titles. Avoiding the bland shooters always meant ruling out 1/4th of the 360 and PS3 library or buying a Wii.

I'm finally posting in this thread because I can. I miss this year like a mother ** now. This was the year of Naruto for anime, near end of 50 Cent's run, Jeezy's peak, AMV's, Sparta and arguably the comeback of the Chipmunks. This was also the year the Boondocks peaked.
