Subject: What is something all 2000's babies have in common?
Written By: unicornic on 10/07/17 at 8:44 pm
I thought this would be an interesting thread to make. What are things that people born from 2000-2009 all share or have in common?
The ones I could think, on the top of my head, is we all don't remember 9/11, we were all ten years old at some point in the 2010's, were all in school at some point between September 2015-June 2018.

Hard for me to think. I don’t think I share much in common with anyone born after 2003/4

It's kinda hard to tell really, Becasue you younger 00's babies are still so young, there Is still sooo much time for things to happen that would create similarities/differences between all 2000s babies.

They did not exist in the 1900s
They are the first babies born in the new Millennium.
They are all part of Generation Z
Between August 2015 and June 2018 all of them were in school.
The first episode of Spongebob Square pants is older than all of them

2000s babies have been joining the forums for a number of years now, at least the oldest ones born in 2000. However it was only this year that there has been a sudden influx of 2000s babies here on this forum, and they were born up to 2003/4 as far as I'm aware!

‘80s born people are getting older, I am old enough to be the father of some of the newest members here. I know a woman my age that was a teenage mom and has a son born in 2004. Apparently there is a 2004 born member here now.

I will be 31 in only 7 months, then I’ll be only 9 years from 40 which means I’ll be as close to my 40th birthday in 2027 as my 22nd birthday in 2009. It’s weird to think. It does make life seem really short when you look at it like that. Another pretty scary one is being as close to being 50 as being in middle school in the late ‘90s.

I was born in September 1997, and I still feel old when people say they were born in the 2000s. I'm especially freaked out by the fact that there are some girls and boys born after 2004 whose voice is already changing into their adult pitch. I cannot fathom the thought of bearded men and grown women born after 2004. They don't hardly even remember the 2000s and were only in preschool in the beginning of the 2010s and now they're maturing so fast! :o

It's nothing abnormal or wrong but I find it so weird how a few of my peers are dating people born in 1990 when just a few years ago, it would have been such a significance difference. We've matured to the point that we can connect to a level with you guys. :)
Likewise it's going to seem so weird for me in another few years when someone born in 1997 might be dating someone born in 2004, of course when they're of legal age that they've matured. It's weird how time works. ???

A question to all of the '00s babies. What is your opinion of us '80s babies? Like, when you meet people my age do we seem like old outdated people to you or still kind of young and hip? Do you see us '80s babies as more of a parental type figure or more like an older sibling. Most of the people I know were born during the '80s and '90s so I don't get to ask this often of '00s babies.

*They were all born in the 2000s (decade & century).
*Most of them were born when George W. Bush was President of the U.S.
*Most of them will learn 9/11 as a historical event that they weren't even alive for.
*The U.S. not being at war in the Middle East is something they have never known.
*Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has always been a Hollywood actor to them.

It really depends on the person lol. Sometimes they can seem like old and outdated people, but some of them seem younger and like you said more like an older sibling. To me, people born in the last few years of the 90s I just see as my peers and no really difference. But for people born in the 80s, at least from what I've seen is that people born in the late 80s still seem pretty young and not really like a parental figure (although even then theyre still really confused by some of the stuff in our generation lol ::)), but then for example my cousins born in the early 1980s are just regular boring adults if you know what I mean haha, remeber that the oldest people from the 80's are now approaching 40 while the youngest are still in their late 20s, that's quite a difference. Alot of my teachers were born in the late 80's and being honest they actually seem a lot more young and hip than some of the teachers born in the early 90's who no one really likes! :-X. One of my school teachers is born in 1998 lol and he doesnt make it easy for people to like him haha ;D
Btw, why don't you really talk to 00's babies, what do you think of them? ???

Because we’re 30. lol. 30 year olds don’t really hang around teenagers and little kids unless they’re teachers or work in some other field where you might deal with people that age or their own kids are that age. Some of my friends have mid-late ‘00s born kids. Of course to me they seem like babies and it’s kinda hard to think of them as anything else. I mean I am an adult who could be their father or is actually the age of their parents and they are just some little kid. Early ‘00s born is more borderline I’m a lot older than you maybe technically biologically old enough to parent most of you but I was only in 8th 9th 10th grade when you were people were born. Still they are teenagers in high school, I am a 30 year old man it’s just different worlds. ;D

It's hard to explain, but I don't think of them in the same way as adults who are around my parents ages, to be honest. For instance, my Society & Culture teacher was born in 1986, so she's only 13 years older than me. She can even relate to some of the things that people my age grew up with, like watching Toy Story as a kid or certain shows on TV. I think it's because most '80s babies were still too young to have given birth to people who are my age.

Now that's creepy, especially to the fact that even in comparison to many early 00's babies (so high schoolers now) your average person born in 1992 would be seen as an 'older figure'. Now thats bizarre...
Also in a couple years there will probably be more 90's babies teachers as more start to graduate with bachelors/masters degrees. That's how you know your getting older ;D.

Yeah that probably makes the most logical sense. However, many 1996-1998 babies are gonna start becoming teachers as they start graduating from college in the next couple of years, so thats something to digest as well...
I need a drink....

I guess its because 1991ers & 1994ers are close in age to me is why it seems very jarring for them to now be safely seen as 'adults' or officially 'members of society' in the case of being teachers. My sister was born in 91', and I have cousins born in 94', and we all grew up with each other watching Nickelodeon' Summer Beach House in the early 00's, watching children's movies on VHS, playing with super soakers during the summer, going to Six Flags in the summer as well, I could go on and on.

I remember 1987ers like me seeming super young like circa 2010 still, but now I’m like gradually realizing how we’ve gotten older since then. It’s just depressing how gradual and little by little it is, you hardly notice real time until you think back that you were a lot younger 10 years ago or something. It’s different than when I was 20 and 10 years ago meant I was just a little kid. Now 10 years ago means I was 20 and more youthful then. That’s why people say it all goes by so fast I guess. :-\\

Haha savage 8). Now that I think about it, I always wondered how my Baby Boomer parents felt when they met some of my Gen X teachers during Parent-Teacher conferences...
God forbid them meeting some of my older Millennial teachers, those born in the early 80's ones, they were probably thinking "You know you young guppie, I'm old enough to be YOUR teacher" ;D.

Maybe its different for people in different places, but the youngest teachers from my high school were born in the early-mid 80's, maybe late 80's (and by that I mean likely 87ers). Of course they were few and far between as most teachers in my high school were either longtime Boomers who've been teachers at the school for decades, or Gen Xers who've likely just received their official teacher tenures.
It probably has changed in recent years given that I've been out of high school for a few years now.

Well, think about it. At the beginning of the decade I was Longaotian's age, a minor, a high schooler and still a kid in most people's eyes. Then just a few mere years later we're teachers at those schools now. Before you know it... "I'm old" lol.

It probably has changed in recent years given that I've been out of high school for a few years now.

There's been early '90s born teachers for some time now.
But its pretty much what Slowpoke above me just mentioned. For most of my life early 90's babies were simply just the slightly older intimidating 'bid kids', not the guys who are supposed to mind my kids. I remember in kindergarten we thought that the 5th graders were the badasses of the school and ran sh!t ;D.
Even by the time I was in high school, most early 90's babies were merely just seniors in high school, just graduating from high school themselves and or entering college. By the time I was coming of age, most early 90's babies had just graduated college and or were trying to attain masters degrees.
Once again, to you early 90's babies could range as being as old as 6-9 years older than your self, which is a sizeable age gap and why it doesn't seem as jarring to you especially given the fact that you never really went to school with them. But to me its only a 3-6 year age gap, meaning many of them I went to school with, heck some of the 1992/1993ers I'd safely say 'I grew up with'. Its only a matter of time when more of us mid-late 90's babies start becoming official members of society...

When I started High School, 1993ers were the Seniors, now their my teachers even though we went to school together a few years back! ;D
The same thing will happen when us 2000ers start teaching 2007 babies at school :o

Now thats much more jarring. Haha yeah it would be crazy in 7 years time when 2007 borns (who'd likely be seniors by then) would be like, 'We went to high school together, why you treating me like a kid!!!'. ;D.

They did not exist in the 1900s
They are the first babies born in the new Millennium.
They are all part of Generation Z
Between August 2015 and June 2018 all of them were in school.
The first episode of Spongebob Square pants is older than all of them
Well most of them are but technically people in the year 2000 were born in the 20th century/2nd millennium. It’s a technicality and I know most people consider the millennium to have started in 2000, but still should be pointed out.

Damn. So if I went to your school, I’d be a senior while 2009 babies will be freshman? Damn that would make me feel old cause not only do they have no memory of the 00s, but they also don’t remember 2010 and 2011.

I had an English teacher born in April of 1987 for three years in a row.
And my freshman year religion teacher was born in 1990.

When I started school during 1992, most teachers were '40s and '50s born, with some younger teachers being '60s borns. My 2nd grade teacher was born around 1970, which was pretty young. My 7th grade teacher was born around 1975. My senior year of high school, I had a teacher that was born around 1980, so he was only a couple years older than I was.

If you all think the late 80s and 90s people are just teachers, wait until you realize that they're also reporters, mentors, electricians, construction workers, bartenders, music producers, and movie directors! That's how you know we're all practically old and have been members of society for some time.

I'd say one thing the early 2000's kids have in common was that technology like iPads and Tablets weren't around and so we had more active childhoods (not saying late 2000's kids didn't/don't have active childhoods) but we had more 90's kids tendencies and habits.

There actually does seem to be a pretty big gap between early '00s borns and late '00s borns, though obviously it's hard to say this currently because late '00s borns are still quite young. From a tech standpoint, though, the gap seems to be much bigger than it was from early '80s to late '80s borns and even early '90s to late '90s borns.
This would largely be because of the major advancements during the later years of the '00s. A kid born during the early '00s would remember a time before YouTube, the iPhone, and perhaps even social media, whereas most late '00s borns will not. The late '00s born is the stereotypical '10s kid that had an iPhone and a social media profile by the time they started elementary school.

I was born in 2002 and clearly remember a time before the iPhone. I even already spent half of my childhood when the iPad wasn’t released yet.
I remember when I was 11 and there was a four year old (born in 2009) who was playing on an iPad and had headphones in. It’s even hard to believe we were born in the same decade, yet have extremely different childhoods. When I was four, the iPhone wasn’t even out yet. :o

I agree. Being born in 2000, I find it hard to relate to the younger 00s borns becasue of this. All of this technology and device they use everyday just wasn't really around when I was the same age as them like 10+ years ago, and I think this is because how quick technology has advanced since the late 00s+ like you mentioned. One big difference is at school, imo I think when I was growing up in primary school, my experince was much more like the rest of 90s borns simply becasue the lack of technology we used there, all we used were some ancient CRT montiors in the 'computer room' and one of those old overhead projectors. These days, I see in primary schools all the classes have smart boards and all the students work all day on their iPads which they also learn to code on.......I mean these kids don't know a world without all this everydays use of technology and like you said someone born in the same decade as them like me yet can rememeber a time before YouTube, iPhones, social media lol and they don't know what dial-up is either :P

It’s kind of weird how different us early 2000’s babies had a completely different childhood compared to late 2000’s babies. Someone born in 2000 can vividly remember a time before YouTube, iPhones, whereas someone born in 2009 wasn’t even alive when these things came out. Even the difference in childhood experience between a 1990 and a 1999 born is less compared to a 2000 born and a 2009 born IMO.

I understand where you two are coming from with the technological advancements considering they have been improving quickly for the past decade which is why I understand you all relate to 90s people more than the younger 00s folks; however, you have to remember that it's only one factor. When it comes to other aspects, you all grew up the same. It's unfortunate that you all can't recall a time with economic prosperity or even when terrorist attacks weren't constantly occurring everyday. Follow by the fact the general atmosphere is not in a good position either with all of the hostility and divisiveness.

It's strange, because my Year 11/12 science teacher was born in 1991 and we were all able to bond over several things from the Early/Mid 2000s, such as gaming consoles, movies/tv shows and remembering certain things. I just couldn't imagine someone born in 2001 and 2009 being able to bond in the same way, to be honest.

Plus, people born in the 90s say the exact same thing about 1990 vs 1999, i.e. it's very different, which it is.

True but most 90s babies will probably lump you in with the 2009-born, usually overly-nostalgic ones on Twitter or Buzzfeed. I'm not sure why but they just do.

??? The Great Recession only hit in 2008, before that was a time of economic prosperity. Also, while terrorist attacks were a thing in the 00s/90s/80s, they didn't seem to happen every day like they do now.
Hostility and divisiveness? Seems like something wich has been commonplace about 2013/4+. I know for a fact the 2000s had quite a different atmosphere to the 2010s, especially politically so I just don't understand where you getting this from, I mean apart from 9/11...

Actually no, the economic prosperity ended in 2001 due to a mild recession followed by later events; however, though, the economy was still decent up until the Great Recession. Yeah, that's what I said. Terrorist attacks were rare back in those days compared to now.
What I mean by that last statement is while childhood was somewhat peaceful, your adolescence has not. There have been constant attacks happening every other day whether they are bombings, mass shootings, people purposely getting ran over, etc. Now I'm aware you are from NZ, but here there hasn't been peacetime since the War on Terror started in retaliation of 9/11.

OH....so you talking about our adolescence aswell.....I'm pretty sure only our childhood is relevant here and that's what we have been talking about becasue late 00s babies are still in their childhood, we will have to wait until the 2020s to see how things occur ok. For now, we were just comparing the different childhood/upbringing and how different they were, which is ironic considering this is a thread about what 00s babies have in common ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, you all were, but you were only talking about the differences about technology, and not everything else which is something I tend to see on every site I go on. What UltraGameDog gets wrong is:
1. Terrorist attacks have been going on for decades (possibly centuries). The 1990s was also the start of the modern wave of terrorist attacks and mass shootings.
2. If 1990-1992 borns can't lumped in with 1997-1999 borns...then how in the world can 2000-2002 borns be lumped in with 2007-2009 borns when there is a greater difference?
3. When a 2000-2002 born started their childhood in 2003-2005 versus when a 2007-2009 born started their childhood in 2010-2012...the world was drastically different from each other. The mid 2000s was a mostly different time from the early 2010s.

True, but that's domestic terrorism you're referring to unless you're talking about it worldwide.
That's because they were talking about technology when that's only one factor. We have to look at other possibilities and see if there are differences in them as well.

The gulf between early '90s babies and late '90s is pretty huge too. Being a teen in the mid-late 2000s was different from being a teen in the mid-2010s. How poorly/childlike late 1990s babies view the 2000s always shocks me ;D
I'm pretty sure someone born 1985 or so feels the same way with the way we talk about the early 2000s.

We're talking about childhoods not teen years. Of course there was a big difference between my childhood and an early '90s born but not as much difference as between an early 2000s born and a late 2000s born.
I'll explain:
*1990-1992 borns grew up between 1993-2004. Meanwhile, 1997-1999 borns grew up between 2000-2011.
*2000-2002 borns grew up between 2003-2014. Menawhile, 2007-2009 borns are growing up between 2010-2021.
Do you see how while there is a big difference between both groups...the gap between the childhoods of early '00s borns and late '00s borns is larger?

Saying 97ers were kids in 2000 is a bit of a stretch. Most I know don't remember much before 2003. Actually, my twin cousins born 97 (from Texas) stayed over at my house in 2000 when they came to Canada. The girl kept trying to lick and eat my N64 cartridges and the dude kept crying because he wanted a dolly. They drove me nuts. ;D
They don't have any memory of those events btw. Also I'm not saying one is bigger than the other, just saying they're both very big. 9 year age difference is always big.

Just when having a conversation with them, mentioning anything that occurred before 2003 is going to get puzzled reactions. I can't make Digimon or DBZ references around them and even Pokémon references are hit or miss. Seriously!? Thats pretty bizarre. I was born in 1996, and I get all of those references due to me watching (too much) of those shows like Pokemon, DBZ, (to a lesser extent) Digimon as a kid. Its hard for me to reckon that someone only a year younger than me would've not have remembered watching Kids WB or Toonami during their prime in the early 00's.
Perhaps its just anecdotal, because most of my friends born in 1997-1998 seem to have had a similar upbringing.

That's probably just one anecdote. People usually tend to take one anecdote of people slightly younger than you not getting references, and use that to act like everyone slightly younger than you doesn't get your references and is way different from you. For example, I was born in 1995 and people, even those just ONE year older than me, often use my birth year as the "year of doom" (probably because it's a nice, rounded halfway point) i.e. "If u were born in 95 and up, you have no common sense", "90-94 real 90s babies", "95+ grew up with Internet and are spoiled", etc. I see it a lot on Twitter, Buzzfeed, etc. and it really grates on my nerves, especially when it's coming from 94ers.

Yeah they act like people born in the early 2000s had iPhones in their childhoods. Which they/you didn't because iPhones weren't really popular until 2011. They also act like people born in 2000 never used VHS even though VHS was still used by lower-class families in the mid-late 2000s, and is still used by them to this day (heck, at the local library I overheard a 10 year old saying to his grandma he has one of the DVDs there on VHS. Well, what those folks are saying is bogus! The only reason why they keep saying 1995 (or 2000) are the "years of doom" is because they are constantly using the technology factor (I see it everywhere online) while excluding other aspects. I agree that it does get tiring.

Anyways, yes...a 9 year age difference is always big but the that's not what was being debated.

I don't really see people born in 1998 doing it as well (this is probably because I see and talk with them on a daily basis while on campus). Based on my experience, they will usually mention about how they used some things from the 90's (PS1, N64, Tamogatchi, etc) when they were growing up at most.
I'm not really sure about people born between 1995 and 1997 though.

It's really ridiculous. They claim that because they can, in general, remember more of the early 2000s that their childhood was better because it was "more '90s". I hate those people...they act if being able to remember 2000 & 2001 makes them Gods or something.

Older 00's babies were in school in the 2000s, younger 00's babies will be in school in the 2020s, however all 00's babies were at school at some point in the 2010s :P
Every 2000's baby has attended school during the 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017, and the 2017-2018 school years.

All '00s babies make me feel old.
This will provide a good example. When a former buddy of my mom's met us during an early '00s summer vacation, she bought her son with her who was 2 at the time. That 2-year-old is almost an adult.

Yeah but I'm sure someone like me born in 2000 doesn't make you feel nearly as old as someone born in 2009 who's still in primary school :P

Do you remember the year though? He possibly could be born in 1998-1999, which would make him a legal adult.

There's teachers born in the early 90's :o NOW!?
Now that's creepy, especially to the fact that even in comparison to many early 00's babies (so high schoolers now) your average person born in 1992 would be seen as an 'older figure'. Now thats bizarre...
Also in a couple years there will probably be more 90's babies teachers as more start to graduate with bachelors/masters degrees. That's how you know your getting older ;D.
Yep my teacher was born in '91.

Things all people born in the 2000's have in common:
• They all attended elementary school at some point in the 2010's.
• They were all in school at some point during late 2014-mid 2018.
• They all spent at least one core childhood age in the 2010's (AKA age 10)
• They all grew up in the 2010's, whether it be a kid or teen, or both.
• iPhones were very popular when they were all still in their childhood. (iPhones really took off in 2011/2012)
• As of now, they are all the current target audience for pop culture.
• They're all apart of Generation Z (debatable)

As a person born in 2004 I've never had a iPhone.

No, that's true. Actually, now that 2000 borns are becoming 18, I've started to deal with them more and more at work and socially, so the age gap perhaps isn't as big as it once was. Something that almost all '00s babies have in common is that all of you guys are in pre-adolescence or in adolescence at the moment with the exception of the 2008-2009 babies, who are still in my opinion little kids. Anyone under 10, is a little kid at the moment. Though 2008 babies are having their 10th birthdays this year, leaving the 2009 babies in the lurch until next year.
You guys are all growing up. ;D

As a '97 baby, I can confirm that! It's weird to think the ultimate 2020s kids are already all born and are currently going on their first b-day :o
For the thread, the 2000s were such a changing decade, I can't think much of a similarity between them (2000 babies for instance are already getting in their adulthood while 2009 babies are not even teenagers yet). The big similarity between all of them that comes to mind would be that they never really experienced/lived in a pre-9/11 world (even though it took until like 2003 to see noticeable changes being set in place).
That's about it really.
But one thing that sets some apart from the others (early 2000s babies from the late 2000s ones) would be that they still experienced the times before the recession, before the iPhone domination and before social media was a part of life, in clear when the 2010s kicked in (early 2000s babies are 2000s kids, crazy huh ::)).

I've already shared this story on Popedia, but just a few days ago I was on ROBLOX (a kid's game) and this girl came to talk to me and my friend and we had a pretty good conversation. We then talked about zodiac signs and my friend said she was born in April and apparently the girl was born in April too. She asked what year and my friend answered 2001, and here's the shocking part: The girl said she was born on April 2nd, 2009. Yes, everybody. People born when the recession was at its worst and when Lady Gaga first became huge and when YouTube was finally HD are old enough to have a decent conversation without their parent's help. I seriously can't imagine anyone born after 2009 I mean that's pretty much an embryo to me.

I think I would go as far as say 2000-2004, many people here seem agree that 2004 still had that early 2000s vibe to it. Making mid-2000s fall a bit on the short end with only 2005-2006 but oh well

You need to go more on YouTube, there are plenty of those 2008-2009 borns there (even though theres like a 13 y-restriction but whatever). The youngest I've ever encountered so far is a 2011 born somewhere in September 2017 (that user has a high IQ so more well spoken than your avarage 6 year old). THAT was a bit of a shock.

Walked by an elementary school a few weeks back, and it suddenly dawned to me that most kids in elementary school now barely or don’t even remember Gangnam Style being released. Some 1st graders were even born AFTER it was released. Had a “holy sh!t” moment.

It definitely does but when you think about it, using the Internet and social media has become a way of life, it's all around us, and kids that young see it all of the time. It's especially weird to see how knowledge hungry they can get, already trying to understand all of the online trends. My cousin last summer was trying to explain to me all of the Youtube challenges and channels and online references, buzzwords. It's probably a popular topic of conversation in her kindergarten class.
