Subject: In the future, when people think "2000s", will Late 2001-2006 come most to mind?
Written By: Zelek3 on 08/03/17 at 8:39 pm
To me, late 2001-2006 - the time period after 9/11 killed off the remaining "90s" vibe, but before 2007 came along with iPhones, social media exploding, Great Recession, etc. - seems to be the "definitive" section of the 2000s. Would you agree with this?
When you look at all the nostalgia over the 2000s that's budding on websites like Buzzfeed, it's usually things from the Late 2001-2006 period that they talk about; anything after that is not as talked about.

I understand what you're saying and I mostly agree that Late 2001-2006 will generally come most to mind. However, I think the Late 2000s were also significant to the overall identity of the decade and the elements of popular culture from the time will equally be viewed as being "2000s". People don't think in terms of cultural periods. If they see something from 2009 that they are nostalgic about, they will think of it as being apart of the overall 2000s identity. The fact that people currently aren't nostalgic for the Late 2000s, is simply due to the fact that the era is more recent. In a few years time, more people will become nostalgic for the Late 2000s.
I know most people don't agree with this, but I don't believe the 2000s had a strong identity to begin with, especially when you compare them with decades such as the '70s, '80s and '90s.

People already think of things like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to be 2000s, so I don't think the late 2000s will be ignored.
And 2000-2006 is the "early 2000s" to BuzzFeed, so even from them there's a recognition there's another part of the 2000s they're leaving out.

The 2000s are from 2000 - 2009 so most things from this period is what will come in mind in the future. Just as now I don't care about dividing up the '80s and think of everything between 1980 - 1989 as the 1980s.

I'll always remember 2003 to 2008 as the 2000's pop culturally and late 2005 - mid 2008 personal life wise as the defining periods of the 2000's. I think in time the whole decade will be more accepted and 2003 to 2008 (aka the mid 2000's) will be the part that defined it most in terms of music and atmosphere. I think it's just right now people are still concentrating on when the 90's had it's last gasp in 2001 - 2006 but I think eventually the whole decade will be celebrated on it's own terms.

It will be the entire decade ('00 - '09) in 30 years from now, trust me.

I agree with this. A lot of the debate right now is whether or not the late '00s is more culturally tied with the '10s than its own decade. I believe we have yet to see the legacy of the early '10s in terms of the overall direction of pop culture but I really think the late '00s and early '10s were closer to the '00s culturally than the core '10s. It's fitting being that this is the decade of '90s nostalgia and we saw a similar thing in the '90s, with the first few years being very different than most of the decade.

In the future decades will just be the entire thing without these divisions. I believe the late 2000s relate more to the 2010s, but it won't matter 30 years from now as there will be so many changes that it will be insignificant.

No. I think it will be the whole decade unless some people will still be dividing the era by then.
