Subject: 2006-2007 school year

Written By: John Titor on 06/17/17 at 4:25 pm

What a weird year this was, the classic 2000's was on the way out while the new - late 2000s creeped in.
What are some of your memories of this school year?

Key points to ponder while thinking of this time period.
This was in my opinion the LAST true classic 2000's feeling year.

Justin Timberlakes, Future Sex Love Sounds debuts, and starts to influence other artists.
Playstation 3 debuts to massive hype, Nintendo Wii debuts in the same week.
Mtv's TRL is already in talks of cancellation as early as January 2007 due to low ratings.
Facebook becomes popular around March 2007, and fully overtakes myspace a year later.
The Iphone debuts at the end of this school year.
Windows Vista is released and becomes a huge flop.
Beach/Surf shows such as Laguna Beach peak this year
The WB changes to the CW
Borat becomes a mini fad for a few months

The release of the Casino Royale remake, kickstarting the Daniel Craig era of James Bond movies.

I was in 2nd grade during the 2006-07 school year. There were moments where I was teased (even by a teacher) and I contemplated suicide :(. However, I was able to stay strong and the school year was mostly fun. I met one of my best friends this school year and started doing announcements on the school intercom....I felt so proud (even though I was shy).

That's sad, a 7 year contemplating death. :( Well, it's good that you still had fun most the year. :)

Yeah, I know and it sucked but thankfully I didn't kill myself...my mother and my best friend (Daniel) helped me through it. With the exceptions of the occasional teasing/bullying...I enjoyed 2nd grade (went on trips, watching my favorite shows, playing my favorite games).

It was my Senior year of high school. I joined track, for only 4, or 5, weeks, and that was it!  ;D
I came out to my parent (with my sexuality) in October of 2006. I was in tears.  :(

It was fun, we laughed, we laughed more, and then we graduated.  :o  :o

Unfortunately, early 2007 was when I started gaining weight. Oh, the horror!  :o  :o  :o

Sadly, that's not as uncommon as you might think. My younger brother also had a teacher that constantly gave him a hard time during his 2nd grade year, too. She was some crotchety old lady that seemed to hate teaching kids but kept doing it anyway for the money. This went on for several weeks until my mother and grandmother found out about it and then went to the school and cussed the teacher out. That was fun to watch. Anyways, I'm glad that you were able to get through all of that and enjoy your 2nd grade year overall.

As far as the 2006-07 school year for me. Well, I'm not gonna lie, I spent a whole bunch of time getting drunk. You could certainly say I was pretty reckless that year, but, hey, it was my sophomore year of college. When else are you allowed to be reckless if not then?

My teacher wasn't even an old lady. She was young (in her late 20s) and I even remember her name (Ms. Beck :-X).....however, thanks. I was able to pull through the bad stuff and have a mostly good year.

Also, yes....reckless in college is OK ;D. As long as no one harms anyone.

I can relate to you, man. I had attractive teachers in 6-8th grade that were sympathetic to my slow processed mind at the time but now that I look back, I know they were laughing with my dissers behind my back. And for that, they'll never see my amazing transition.

My personality is really indebt now. Haha

Did they ever give a hint, or show a sign, or signs, that they were laughing at you behind your back?  ???  ???

I'm more sad than angry. It's sad that there are teachers out there like that. I get that teachers can get stressed out and some children are snotty, and/or downright bad, but that's never an excuse to be a dick to someone who hasn't done anything to you as a teacher. Oh well, I'll get over it. It's nice to vent sometimes though!

I've been lucky to not have ran into a bad teacher.....yet. Teachers can play favorites too.

That would explain a lot, but I think a more realistic explanation is that it was just Borat hysteria.

That's the moment the classic 2000s morphed into the shiny modern 2000s. Along with Pluto no longer being a planet, and Facebook becoming open to college students.

August-September 2006 was jam-packed with pop culture changes.

Debatable on whether it's brave, or not. My parents are pretty open minded! They are a weird mix of open-mindedness and strictness. When it comes to social things, they're very open-minded.  8)  8)  8)

But thanks anyways for the compliment.  ;)  ;)

That's really fortunate (and brave nonetheless) :D

It was one of my least favourite school years! I was in Year 10 (equivalent to 9th grade, I think) - the penultimate year of high school - and had just started studying for my GCSEs. My optional subjects were music, IT, German and sociology. It was the year I became fed up of high school and I was also ill a lot. It was the year I signed up for Bebo which was a very popular social network in the UK and Ireland (more popular than Myspace).

I think this was the 'peak emo' school year. A lot of my friends were into My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy. I also think of this school year as the Timbaland year!

Bebo is actually an American website and it has it's headquarters in San Francisco. Apparently, it was really massive in the UK as well. At one point, it even overtook the popularity of Myspace, according to this article:

http://www.zdnet.com/article/bebo-overtakes-myspace-in-the-uk/

I've heard of Bebo, but I don't think it was ever really a popular website here in Australia. In fact, the local operations were closed in November 2009, because it couldn't compete with Facebook:

I'm not a kid today but based on what I've gleaned, it seems like it goes in a cycle because Late Gen Z kid culture (Late 2016?-2020) might be getting boring and depressing again like it was in the Early Gen Z kid culture (Late 2006-2010?), after Core Gen Z kid culture (2010-2016?) which had an animation renaissance.

Endless TTGO reruns abound taking up everything else, The Emoji Moive, good shows getting cancelled left and right, etc.
