On this forum I go to, people always seem to point to 2007 as "Eternal September Part 2". They point to the iPhone, The Big Bang Theory, Windows Vista coming out, Facebook beginning to gain popularity over MySpace, Twitter gaining massive popularity at a PAX conference, etc. - all of which occurred in 2007 - popularizing social media and "geek culture", which has turned the Internet from what they claim was a fun niche(ish) community into a narcissistic social media platform.

However, I myself didn't really notice these things start to take off until about 2009, in 2007 they were still largely in the background. What about you?

I got Twitter in late 2008, Facebook in early 2009 and an iPod Touch in early 2010 (and an Android smartphone in late 2010).

For Facebook? 2009 or 2010. Twitter around the same time. Iphones? 2010 actually. Facebook started in '04, but people were still crazy over Myspace. Twitter started in '06, but how many of you even heard of Twitter during that year? I'm sure we've all heard of iphones by around 2007 or '08, but in the late 00s it still wasn't common to see kids with phones and the older people who had phones were still using fliphones and brands like nokia.

When it came to social media and things related to it (such as phones) the late 00s is quite dated when compared to the late 10s.

I remember seeing the first ad around June of 2007, where I was curious on what it did as a cellphone. Although, I never saw it blew up until I knew how teenagers used it so much. It sucked to me since I was more comfortable towards computers.

My family (including myself) all had Facebook accounts by that year. I remember friending a lot of weird people by the early 2010s, to the point where my mom questioned on what the hell I was doing.

It all happened thanks to those hashtags that were grounding up by the start of the 2010s. I thought they were number signs at first, but they were really "hashtags" according to certain people. To this day, I would never understand why somebody had to use a number sign for starting social media trends.

I don't know. I saw my high school peers with Facebook already, in 2006. But 2008/2009 feels right.

Somewhere around '08-'11.

Here's the times when I started to notice various things.

iPod: I first started to see some kids get iPods during the 2003-04 school year, though it was only a small handful and all of their parents were loaded. Probably 2004-05 was when you started to see a decent number of kids with them, and late 2005 before it was more than half.

Flip Phones: There was a huge explosion popularity wise for flip phones between 2003-04 and 2004-05. By early 2004 I only knew about a dozen or so kids that had their own cell phone, but by early 2005 that number was probably close to a hundred.

YouTube: January 2006 for me, which was when I discovered YouTube, and when other folks I went to school with started sending me links for videos to watch.

MySpace: MySpace took off hugely during my senior year. By early 2005, about half the kids at my school had a MySpace. But, I didn't start my account until later that year.

Facebook: Pretty sure that I first heard of Facebook sometime just after 2007 started. There were kids at my college that had a Facebook account before that, but I didn't pay much attention to social media, so I was late on the bandwagon. Didn't become aware of it truly though until it started overtaking MySpace during 2008.

Twitter: Honestly, it was the 2008 presidential election that first introduced me to Twitter. Folks on TV kept talking about how cool it was that Obama had an account on this thing called Twitter, and that led me to check out the site so I could see what it was. Twitter crashing after Michael Jackson died the next year was a big moment, too.

iPhones: June 2007 when they launched was when I first heard of iPhones, but it wasn't until 2009 or 2010 that I started to see a bunch of people I knew actually owning them.

2008 was when this stuff really started taking off especially in the middle of the year. It wasn't like today where everybody seemed to use it though, but it was entering the mainstream.

I forgot about Myspace. Haha I heard of that site right in 06 through my first love.

Facebook and Twitter both right when they started. iPhones I only really heard about in 2012/2013 cause I paid little attention to cell phones til then.

The first social media I was on, was Myspace. (following 3T even then) and at the time I was still doing pageants (late 2004/early 2005) and one of the nurses who would come check on my mom had a daughter, she was a little younger. I was 18/19, she was 15/16,  in pageants and asked me to add on her Facebook. I didn't have an account, so I started one and I think I still follow the girl now, but she's married with HER kid in pageants now.

(FB is the ONLY social platform I ever joined that was not directly associated with a Jackson. LOL)  ;D

Probably around 2007-2010 for Facebook (when my brother had it or something and was caught going on it because he was too young for it), iPhones at around the same time (wanted one), and Twitter a bit later. From 2007, I was probably around 10 years old.

Just MY personal observations, not that these years are when they did or didn't.

2009 for Facebook
2010 for smart phones, 2011 for EVERYONE to jump on the bandwagon
Some time shortly after 2010 for Twitter
2013 for Tumblr to get on my radar
After 2013 for Instagram
2013 and after to see more people with tablets

These days YouTube has over 2 billion hits.

Before Facebook, there was a Dutch site called Hyves. Similar content, just a more childish look, and extremely popular in 2005-2007.

But Facebook has killed it effectly, after the introduction in The Netherlands in the late 00s. Gladly, Hyves' fouding fathers already had sold that site right before that moment. They are rich now.

Twitter became popular in 2009/2010. Iphones: Late 00s.

Facebook sometime near the mid-late 00s. Iphones became popular near 2010, but most people around me were still using BBs. I think Twitter was relatively recent though since I’ve only ever heard of it in 2012.

There was literally no such thing as a YouTuber before 2009. Most of popular content creators uploaded on their own website first, then uploaded to youtube months and sometimes years later.

I don't know when I heard about these places but I joined facebook to maybe have some more people I can talk with or something.  I might want to try Twitter and other places.  If I also want people to watch and enjoy my video, this is the way to do it instead of just leaving it barred in youtube if it can still even be found.

Though most of these things started during the '00s, I don't think that any of them will be associated much with them because of how dominant they've been during the '10s. Several years from now, when looking back, Facebook, Twitter and all of these '00s social media platforms will probably be considered '10s things. That's a change from even a few years ago, when most of these platforms were still considered a major part overall of the '00s high school and college scene.

I still cant figure out how to do what I want where I want to and it may just be set up in a way that seems stupid to me.  Well, I tried it and tried hi to some people.  As far as having a page for me, I like Funny Or Die and far as just talking about stuff and posting pictures, I like it here.  I got an e-mail to start my Twitter account, but crossed out the password I gave them so I'll have to tell them I forgot my password.
