Subject: Most HATED year of the 2000's

Written By: the2001 on 04/19/17 at 6:51 pm

What year is it guys?

For me it's 2009, so out of place  & so many bad things happened in pop culture that year,
its better if 2009 becomes erased from our minds

Hells to the yeah babe. Their sh*t was bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S!  :D

As opposed to the thread's title, I guess 2008. Everyone mostly hated it because of the Great Recession, even though not everybody was badly affected from it.

2006 because Malcolm in the Middle, the center of universe that we hold near and dear to us, was purged and replaced with crap like Hannah Montana.

Just kidding. 2008 because of the economic crash, and the overall dour feeling of the year. 2009 had a more hopeful "rebuilding" feeling.

Well, it was still bad to me since I cherished his work at Apple. Although 2016 was harsh since it had a lot of significant people dying.

I really disliked 2006-08, although that was due more to personal issues than the actual years themselves.

For me, the most 'lukewarm' year was undoubtedly 2003. It was a really watered down version of the Y2K period I loved as child, while simultaneously preceding the more vividly distinct culture of the mid 00s. I guess I view 2003 in the same way that JordanK82 views 1996.

Michael Jackson, which was the most well known death that year. I wasn't a big fan of him, but his death truly shocked the nation. I was more pissed at his doctor for giving him medications that suddenly killed him.

2008 wasn't even that bad, it was just the end that was scary

I didn't really think 2008 was that bad as well. It was just a decent year at best, but certainly had its flaws from most things (e.g. the economy, the election, etc).

I actually view 2003 the same way. Worse, even, since it wasn't the most fun year for my personal life nor did I like what was happening to pop culture very much. 1996 was just boring, 2003 is where everything I really liked from the late 90's/early 00's started disappearing or turning into what it would be for the rest of the 00's.

2009 for me. Just felt like a weird fever dream the whole way through.

Plus the news every morning would go on about how bad the economy was getting while I was sitting key high school exams. Not very relaxing lol.

Though having said all that, as far as I can recall, we had a decent summer that year.

I'd also say 2008 was a poor year as well, though Christmas 2008 was easily the best Christmas I've personally had. Every Christmas since has been kinda disappointing.

I would say culturally 2009 was an early 2010s year though. You had electropop, autotune, Lady Gaga, bright coloured fashion, and then Obama and the economy. This started to happen in 2008.

Those things were still culturally 2000s....yeah it may not have been the quintenssial 2000s genre or fashion but they still are more culturally 2000s than 2010s. Also, Obama didn't really do anything until 2010.

It was a 50/50 year in my eyes. It had a lot in common with 2010-12, but also 2007-08.

The economy was still very much in a funk, much more like that of the late 00s than the actual 10s.

Technology-wise, no question it was more 00s than 10s... social media was still in a nascent stage, most people used traditional digital cameras instead of mobile phones to take pictures, etc.

No man those were definitely 2010s things. 2000s culture is like the opposite of that. It's dark with a hip hop and R&B vibe with baggier and darker clothes and rappers wearing chains. You would look like a fool if you wore that in 2009. The 2010s are totally about the electropop and Lady Gaga/Justin Bieber movement, the economy crash has affected everyone all the way up to the mid 2010s, and Obama has been president all throughout the 2010s. These things are not 2000s at all. Now I would understand if you said there were still 2000s holdovers in 2009, but the majority of things popular in 2009 were early 2010s stuff.

The late 2000s are pretty much the same as the early 2010s, except for stuff from 2007 and some of 2008. So these were all part of the 2010s. The 2010s started early.

I lost my job April 2009 and I know many people who lost it in 2008, so I wouldn't say 2009 felt like the 2000s because of the economy.  :-X :-X

Politically, the first half was still late 2000s though, because Obamamania was still going for the first few months of his term. When he failed to close Guantanamo (I think that was some time in mid-2009), IMO that was when Obamamania ended and his approval rating started to drop.

Politically, the first half was still late 2000s though, because Obamamania was still going for the first few months of his term. When he failed to close Guantanamo, IMO that was when Obamamania ended and his approval rating started to drop.

That is very true.

Even though the most exciting thing about his presidency was that he actually planned to kill Osama Bin Laden, instead of bombing countries in the Middle East.

There is no difference between early 2009 and late 2009. And late 2000s/early 2010s are basically the same thing. Unless we're using 2006 - late 2008 as the era for the late 2000s, but even then 2009 would still not belong there.

All of the years of the 2000s were great, except for 2009.

That year, a mass of random pop artists hit the charts that had not been heard from in any of the years prior(Justin Beiber, Ke$ha, Flo Rida). They started making terrible electro pop that was completely out of step with the tone 2007 and 2008 had set.

Alot of the usual 00's artists failed to put out any albums that year too.
If you google the top 10  best selling first-week HipHop albums of 2009 for instance, album sale numbers were way down overall, and what was left were a bunch of moderately selling (70K-90K) albums from effective nobodies.

I will never forgive Lupe Fiasco for cancelling not 1, but 2 entire finished albums in 2009 just because he wasn't allowed to leave his abusive record label contract when he wanted to. He even performed some of the singles live before he up and cancelled them. Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy came too late.

While there were some movies that I liked(I loved Coroline), there were an unusual amount of underwhelming films, probably due to a disproportionate amount of hype for movies like Avatar, 9, and District 9 which turned out to be mediocre. Inception came too late aswell, it really should've released in 2009 to add a stronger lineup that year.

THIS IS SPOT ON HOW I FEEL

For some reason in 2009, all the usual 2000s artists stopped putting out music out of fear of not being in sync with the then new
electropop fad. 2009 stripped away all of the things we associated with the 2000s. STORES IN MALLS were vanished, Circuit city?
KB TOYS, many many more were gone, around this year people stopped going to the mall, I vividly remember the malls in 2009
being empty.  Movies in 2009 were horrible, MALL COP? LMAO terrible, Avatar? Overrated. 2009  SUCKSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

I'll give you 2006 since the year (while probably the most definitive year of the 2000's from a cultural, political, and personal standpoint) was when the decade was starting to become stale, but 2004, seriously!?

That was probably the best year of the 2000's. The early part of the year still had an 'early' 2000's vibe to it with 90/early 00's TV shows like Frasier, Friends, Sex and The City, Lizzie McGuire, & Angel in their last seasons, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, & Toon Disney still in their Golden/Silver Ages, 90/early 00's tech like Nokia Brick Cell Phones, Dial up internet, CRT's, etc. still being very common, the peak in popularity of post grunge, Britney at the tail end of her golden age of popularity (she fell off massively after 2004), JT at his peak in popularity (especially after the Wardrobe malfunction that same year), Crunk rap at its peak, Neptune's era R&B still killin it, etc. The mid-late sections of 2004 was when the mid 2000's were truly ushered in with iPods becoming popular, myspace getting big with teens, broadband overtaking dial up with most people, the debut of Lost, among other things.

It was the perfect mixture IMO of early 2000's & mid 2000's culture, and it was the first truly core 2000's year (although the core 2000's started somewhere in mid-late 03'). Perhaps I'm biased since my childhood peaked for a good chunk of this year ;D, however, this year just evokes nothing but pure childhood nostalgia and objectively looking back this year just seemed to be the most balanced and peaceful 2000's year. Just Far Enough from 9/11 that it doesn't seem as close or recent as 2003 & before (during the time when W. Bush could do no wrong), but yet right before the political sh!tshow of W. Bush's 2nd term from 2005 onwards.

This was also the best year for movies in the 21st century so far, period! Heck I'd argue that what 1984 was for movies in the 80's, or 1996 was for movies in the 90's, was what 2004 was for the 2000's.

Here's the top 10 grossing films from 2004:

1. Shrek 2

2. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabar

3. Spider-Man 2

4. The Incredibles

5. The Passion of the Christ

6. The Day After Tomorrow

7. Meet the Fockers

8. Troy

9. Shark Tale

10. Ocean's Twelve

This not to mention other iconic noughties films that came out in 2004 like Alien vs. Predator, Anchorman, National Treasure, Mean Girls, Napoleon Dynamite, Dodge Ball, The Aviator, The Notebook, among others!

I also really enjoyed 2005, which defines the 2000s very well. 2006 doesn't define the 2000s to me at all, most of the classic stuff was on its way out that year and late '00s culture was starting to peek in. Hey everybody has their subjective taste on what they like, but you have to admit that out of all of the years of the 2000's, 2004 was the most diverse and balanced in quality when it came to film.

2006 doesn't define the 2000s to me at all, most of the classic stuff was on its way out that year and late '00s culture was starting to peek in. The title for "quintessential 2000s year" is between 2004 and 2005 (maybe even 2003), definitely not 2006.

Ehh... 2006 was pretty staunchly mid 2000's, for the most part. I would go into specifics, but that horse has been beaten to death Late 2006 shift ;D

However I digress, I'd have to disagree with you on the quintessential 2000's year suggestions you made. Usually its either the '5' or '6' year that gets that title due to both of them being the mid sections of their respective decades, while being at the peak of their decade's respective cores. They also are known for being the last years of a respective decade to have early trends still be relatively popular (ie, 1995-96' still had new jack swing, 16 bit consoles, Grunge, etc.), while simultaneously introducing newer late decade trends (ie, 2005-06' introduced YouTube, Web 2.0 internet, Blackberry's, 7th generation game consoles, etc.).

2005 is a reasonable title for quintessential year of the 2000's, 2004 is a tad bit too early though as there was still a heavy early 2000's feel in the early part of the year and literally no late 2000's influences yet. 2003 as you could tell is Way too early. 2005 or 2006 makes sense since they're both considered mid 2000's culturally, both at the peak of the core 2000's (the period from Late 2003 to Mid 2008 when 2000's culture was at its best representation), and they both still had a relative amount of early 2000's influences with shows like Malcolm in The Middle and Gilmore Girls still on the air, Post Grunge still popular, AOL/AIM still popular, among other trends, with Late 2000's trends like 7th generation consoles, social media sites like Myspace, and Skinny Jeans, among other trends getting big.

Keep in mind, while this is my opinion, I am supplying my argument with facts. Subjectively I wasn't a big fan of 2006 either from a cultural standpoint, but I still acknowledge that it (along with 2005) are probably the most representable of what the 2000's were all about. It seems to me (and take no offense) that you seem to be pretty biased about 2005 since that year you liked culturally over 2006, even though objectively 2005 & 2006 (minus the last third of the latter year) are pretty much the same culturally in the grand scheme of things.

2006 IMHO was just a more stale/burn out version of 2005, hence why there seems to be a huge disdain for that year. Also, ironically the reason why there was such a massive cultural shift during that year, particularly during the last third of it, was possibly because people were becoming disgruntled about the mid 2000's pop culture of that time.

Just my two cents.

That's a pretty relatable anecdote in my life as well. 2005-2006 sort go hand in hand due to the fact that I was already living in New Jersey by that time (moved from New York). But objectively, I think 2005 & 2006 are practically the same.

I guess a funny comparison is that 2005 is the older good looking brother, while 2006 is the younger burnt out druggie. They both have the same personalities, but one is seen as a darling who innovates, while the other is seen as a loser who lacks originality, SAD!

;D

But in all seriousness though, I think the overall peak of 2000's culture was from roughly Late 2004 through Mid 2006. 04' Election, Boxing Day Tsunami, Tail end of Crunk Rap & Start of Snap/Ringtone Rap, Mariah Carey and Greenday's Renaissances with American Idiot and Emancipation of Mimi respectively, Hurricane Katrina, GOP Congress, Launch of YouTube, peak in popularity of Myspace, Playstation 2 & GameCube at their peak, along with Halo 2 Lan Parties, and Emo getting big, you can't get any more 'Noughties' than that 8).

I think this video helps displays how badass 2004 really was 8)

TobExyaPwQg

This was also the best year for movies in the 21st century so far, period! Heck I'd argue that what 1984 was for movies in the 80's, or 1996 was for movies in the 90's, was what 2004 was for the 2000's.

Here's the top 10 grossing films from 2004:

1. Shrek 2

2. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabar

3. Spider-Man 2

4. The Incredibles

5. The Passion of the Christ

6. The Day After Tomorrow

7. Meet the Fockers

8. Troy

9. Shark Tale

10. Ocean's Twelve

This not to mention other iconic noughties films that came out in 2004 like Alien vs. Predator, Anchorman, National Treasure, Mean Girls, Napoleon Dynamite, Dodge Ball, The Aviator, The Notebook, among others!

This year overall just kicked ass :D.

Nope, I don't think you're being biased at all in your assessment of 2004. As somebody who was 17 at the time, I can say rather objectively that you're pretty much 100% spot on about why that was such an awesome year culturally.

Aside from having some of the most iconic movies, music and video games of the '00s, I really like 2004 because of the more old school elements that were still around back then that you mentioned. CRT's still largely being dominant over HDTV's, VHS still at least having a presence against DVD, Web 1.0 having not totally faded yet, iPods and even cell phones still being something of a luxury item and so on. Hell, even by late 2004 YouTube still didn't exist, and I still wasn't even aware of MySpace yet. Even by the beginning of 2007, 2004 already seemed somewhat dated. Now it just seems ancient.

You know what just hit me? I don't recall ever even claiming to like 2006. I was in Atlanta for majority of the year and it felt.. average, mediocre.

I don't remember there being anything exciting about it.

Was it because of Atlanta or because of 2006, or a mix of both? I don't remember anything really good about 2006, except for the Wii, PS3, and Borat. It wasn't necessarily a bad year, but just bland and boring. 2003 in the later half was kind of a rough time in my life with one thing going wrong after another (nothing too serious, just a lot of little things), but there was a lot of good music to listen to.

Nah. Atlanta had nothing to do with it. In 2006, you had to be in school to have fun. I lived in apartments with a nice amount of people I went to school with, including my first love so I was one of the lucky ones.

2006 was a good year for me...despite a few issues.

In late 2006, I remember sitting in a cool warehouse type store and there was this father and his daughter. He worked there and had a TV set up and so he brought his daughter to work. She (if I remember correctly) was 2-3 years younger than me and she was supposed to be watching the movie Cars but instead she kept doing random things instead of watching the movie. However, I was 7 and I was watching the movie intently because I liked it....so he came back and saw that his daughter didn't care at all about the film and he asked me if I wanted the DVD for the movie. I was a bit shocked and the girl tried complaining that he shouldn't give it to me but he did anyways because 'She obviously doesn't want it". The girl was crying even though she totally didn't care about it at all and I was happy and went home and finished watching Cars :D. I still remember that event even though, it's now over 10 years in the past.

In early 2006 (February), I also experienced my first snowstorm which was pretty awesome...that was a huge blizzard with over 20 inches of snow.

Well, if we're doing 2006 memories I have several good stories.

*Helped my grandparents move that July. My dad put their stove on the back of his truck, and it fell off as we were riding down the highway. Luckily nobody was behind us or things could've gotten ugly.

*Got DSL that June, finally. Literally spent two days nonstop downloading music and videos now that my connection was finally fast enough to do it.

*Went to a cousin's 18th birthday party that summer. Got a little bit too drunk and had to get a ride back from another cousin who's a terrible driver. We almost had a few wrecks along the way.

*Discovered YouTube for the first time that January. The way that I consume media has never been the same since.

*Went to a launch party for the PlayStation 3 with some buddies.

*Made arguably my worst purchasing decision of all time when I decided to get a Zune over an iPod thinking that it would be the hot new thing.

Back then, 2007, since I felt like that nothing good was happening. Although in retrospect, 2007 must have been a decent year especially since the financial crisis didn't happen then

Erm yes it did. It began around late 2007.

Ehh... 2006 was pretty staunchly mid 2000's, for the most part. I would go into specifics, but that horse has been beaten to death Late 2006 shift ;D

I agree. 2006 had some changes towards the end but I remember 2007 feeling like the bigger push into the late 2000s, due to iPhones, social media other than MySpace really exploding, leftover Late-Gen Y shows like Kim Possible, Danny Phantom, Ned's Declassified, American dragon jake long, and That's So Raven ending, the global financial crisis bringing an end to the excess of the mid-2000s, Democrats assuming control of Congress, The Big Bang Theory premiering and making it "cool" to be a nerd even though nerds were widely hated beforehand, Windows Vista was released and popularized ugly glossy GUI design, etc.

Bigger tradegies like what? We're talking about from an American perspective. There was no bigger tragedy in the 2000s other than 9/11. Hurricane Katrina is #2 but even that is not considered to be as horrible as 9/11 because 9/11 was a terrorist attack not a natural disaster.

Hurricane Katrina happened in 2005.

Also, 2001 featured the death of singer Aaliyah, the Chandra Levy case (which is what was dominating the headlines right before 9/11) and the Crash of American Airlines Flight 587.

You guys are letting your childhood nostalgia cloud your memory which is not bad but it always makes us forget a lot of horrible things that happened.
