Subject: When Was the Last Time You Went to Blockbuster?
Written By: mach!ne_he@d on 04/09/17 at 12:08 pm
This is an interesting topic to me because we all know how rapidly Blockbuster imploded during the late '00s. It was still one of the biggest companies in the United States in 2005, and by 2010 it was bankrupt.
The last time I ever rented a video from Blockbuster was in June 2008. It was the 2007 Transformers movie on DVD. It was about a month or two later that I signed up for Netflix for the first time, and I never went back to Blockbuster again after that.
Also, on a side note, the last movie I rented on VHS from Blockbuster was in 2003, though I don't remember the name of it.

Roughly 2004, or 2005. But I still went to a video store 2004/2005 and after all the way until 2010/2011, when that video store closed down.

Hmm 2012? I should know this since I went there all the time! Lol But basically until the last one here closed. Now I go to Family Video. Well it's been a while cause we no longer have a working DVD player but that's where we have an account. I wish I would have applied to work at Blockbuster, free rentals!

The last time I remember being in Blockbuster was sometime in the mid-2000s, about 2005 or maybe early 2006. I remember the game Psychonauts being brand new at the time, and I guess that title stuck in my head.

Apparently these locations still exist. Maybe I should call the numbers to verify lol

2010, the first and only time I went to Blockbuster. They asked for my ID to buy Halo 3: ODST because it was M-rated, the only time I ever got carded for a video game! I left my ID at home... Thankfully it was only 10 minutes from my house so I could go get it, but, ugh!

The only time I've ever been carded buying a video game was Perfect Dark Zero which I got along with my Xbox 360 at launch in 2005. Thankfully I did have my ID with me, or things could've gotten ugly!

2007
That's the year where Netflix started up their online streaming service and arguably what accelerated Blockbuster's decline.

Around 2009/2010. I remember my friend's dad drove us to Blockbuster so he could rent a DVD, forgot the title. By that point my family didn't really go there often. I think the last time my family went there regularly was probably around 2007 id say.

I thought carding for video games was a 2010s thing, maybe some new law passed. When I was a kid/teen, I got away with buying M-rated games all the time. ;D

Also my family would also go to a few Mom & Pop Brick/Mortar Video Stores along with Blockbuster's (largely forgotten) rival Hollywood Video. Heck I actually have more personal memories renting games from Hollywood Video over Blockbuster

It's the opposite for me, lol. I remember always going to Blockbuster when I was younger; I think I've only set foot in one Hollywood Video.

I've only been to one but went for a few months straight then only returned occasionally. We also had a Movie Gallery I went to a few times. Remember when Saw was just barely starting? Well I rented the first sequel there. And after that, those movies became crap lmao. I've also been to some Mom & Pop stores. But I don't know if any of them are even around anymore. And back when grocery stores would carry them, that was awesome too. But in all it was mainly about Blockbuster for both movies and games. Now, as I've said, I only go to Family Video. But I need to get a new DVD player.

And I find Netflix very boring for the most part. I miss when Hulu was free and I could watch old shows for free. Now it's all paid. They have paid movies on Youtube. Which sucks cause they used to be a lot less strict. All kinds of movies were uploaded and people obviously couldn't charge. But they did it for fellow fans of the films and shows. Now only a few occasions arise when I can find something on there for free. I've never tried Amazon and I don't know what Hulu is like now. I know we've discussed this somewhere else. But I much prefer to stay on topic of Blockbuster or other video stores. As I'm sure the rest of you do too. :P

2011, the year they closed down. The purpose of going was to get videos for cheap because they were giving them all away for really cheap. But before they closed down me and my family went there very often like almost weekly all throughout the late 2000s. I really miss those days now looking back. :\'(

The last time I went to a Blockbuster was probably around 2009. I remember them closing up in my area around then. I used to go to Blockbuster regularly, and Hollywood video, and back when they had movies for rent at grocery stores I'd get them there too. In the early to mid 90s there was a place called All-American Rental in my area, which rented out movies, video games, and furniture, and my family would go there a lot too.

And in the U.S. they stuck around for another two years (roughly). I even remember driving past one that even had a "GOING OUT OF BUSINESS" sign in its windows.

But if you buy popcorn at a store (either bagged or boxed, from a brand such as Jolly Time, Orville Reddenbachers or Jiffy Pop) and you have a popcorn popper at your home (or even a microwave), then you can prepare it at home.

Either 2007 or 2008. I stopped around the time that streaming movies started to become more common now that I really think about it. Know I still bought DVDs, but don't think I went to Blockbuster for them.

Question, when did Blockbuster trash their VHS tapes? I'm guessing it was around 2004-2006 because that's when all the other retail companies got rid of their tapes.

I think it might have been before then, probably circa the early 00s. I remember going to one such store in 2004 and all they had was DVDs.
However, you could still buy blank tapes in stores.

I believe it was 2006 actually. They stopped saying available on "DVD and video" on ads and stopped selling VHS in 2006 if my memory serves me right.

The blockbuster I had didn't get rid of VHS tapes until Blu rays came around. From what the Cashier told me at the time they needed space for the Blu ray discs . So instead of going to the hassle of having to having to rework the place they simply just got rid of their VHS tapes. Logical move as people weren't buying VHS tapes outside of blank VHS tapes from 2006-2008. When I went in '08 they stopped selling the blank tapes as people started using blank discs to put their home videos on.

Considering I have never gone to a Blockbuster with literal stocks of VHS tapes, I'm not sure. My family never cared about getting movies from Blockbuster, since the one they went to before I was born was utter trash.

I know it was the mid 00's when the VHS tapes stopped getting made. 2006 sounds right. But as far as I remember the stores in my town, not just blockbuster, stopped renting them out earlier than that. They were probably just sitting on the shelves collecting dust.

That sounds about right. As I said, the last time I remember renting a movie on VHS was in 2003, and even by that point they had been relegated to just a single section of the store, with DVDs dominated the rest of it. I would guess by 2005 all VHS movies were gone from our local video stores.

In Japan DVD's became the dominant form of home distribution as soon as it was released in 1995, but here in America while DVD's were released in 1997 it didn't become dominant in the majority of people's homes until 2003. My family hasn't bought or rent movies on VHS regularly since 2001 and from 2002 and on we've only bought or rent movies on DVD. We hardly buy DVD's anymore we just watch movies on Netflix, apps, or TV.
