Subject: BE HONEST: Do you like the late 2000s (2007-2009)?
Written By: TheReignMan99 on 04/05/17 at 3:50 pm
Please be honest. As I've seen on this thread and many others on the Web....the late 2000s (2007-2009) has a bad connotation because it's the time when "Justin Beiber became popular, The Global Recession, the iPhone came out, cartoons started to suck, social media started to become widespread", etc as I've heard many people say.
I was 7 to 10 during the late 2000s and they were the final years of my core childhood and I enjoyed them....though not as much as 2003-2006.
However, what are YOUR honest opinions on the late 2000s? Hate 'em? Love 'em? Neutral?

2008-2011 I remember being a rather upbeat, cheesy, distinctive time that greatly separated itself from both the preceding 5 years and the succeeding 5 years (very similar to 1998-2001). I kind of miss it.

It's complicated. Back then, I thought that was as good as life was going to get. People told me school was great, and adulthood was worse. So while my condition was extremely miserable, I was still grateful for what I had and so I had a positive assessment of life. ;D But those old foggies were wrong, adulthood has been great for me so far and I look back on the late 2000s for the misery that it was. :-X
In terms of pop culture, late 2006 to mid 2008 were a continuation of the mid-2000s: terrible. (in my opinion). Ringtone rap was unbearable. It was slightly better than the mid-2000s but not by much. Late 2008 onwards is when things started to get way better, and by late 2009, we had entered a pop culture golden age (again, in my opinion). :-X

I don't think late 2000s nostalgia will ever be mainstream though.
But I could be eating my hat in 10 years.
Growing up...I heard that "the 2000s suck" and that "nobody would miss any part of the 2000s". Look how much that's changed in a relatively short amount of time.

Yeah, I enjoyed the time-frame aside from the negatives. There were many games from all genres; the music was great except the crunk/snap rap; the fashion wasn't that awful, and the TV shows (and cartoons) were decent.

As for the bold, those are myths. JB was not truly popular until 2010, so he wasn't a icon. Social media, really didn't become widespread until after that same period as well. At that time, it was only Facebook, Myspace and AIM and was only accessible by PCs at best. The people who make those statements either don't seem to recall that era very well, or lump them in with the early 10s.

Getting into decadeology a bit, but I wonder if the "split" between mid 2000s and late 2000s would be more easy to see if, say, the electropop explosion happened in 2007 instead of 2008, or the iPhone was affordable and popular from the beginning.
Most of the "normies" I know just clump 2004-2010 into one pile. Or as Slowpoke would claim, one pile of dirty socks and suckage.

I think it's obvious to tell that I love the late 2000s simply because I was only a child at the time. However, it does have a brighter atmosphere than what I'm seeing now. I would've been interested with politics if I knew what '43 Bush was doing before Obama got inaugurated. Since I was a teen during the Obama era, it sucks of how everything is all about insane conspiracy theories and that most people in college now actually believe something like this.

It makes me ashamed that I live in a f*cking society where everyone is allowed to openly admit this, while everyone believes the late 2000s was worse. I can tell you even as a kid, that the late 2000s had more sane people in which they didn't complain about our goddamn president (Trump) every day. He hasn't even done anything at all since he got inaugurated. He just plays golf with his rich friends while everyone in the entire world complains about bullsh*t that's not even there.
If there is one more person that literally says the late 2000s wasn't good at all, then I'm just going to deny that they exist. We didn't complain about politics every second, we didn't have little children corrupting YouTube with terrible Minecraft videos, and people actually had a sense of humor. Not to mention that we didn't have number signs used as hashtags throughout the late 2000s. Now it's just a dark bliss where everything that people see is just the absolute worst.

Some people bash the late 1980s because it was the time of Paula Abdul, Bobby Brown and the New Jack Swing craze. There are people who bash the late 1970s because of Jimmy Carter being President, the country was still in an economic malaise, the 1979 Iranian Revolution and some during the late 1970s hated the times because disco was popular. However, yes....the late 1990s is really the first end years of a decade where people generally disregard it.

Now I think back of it.. it was ok. Popculturally, I'm neutral. My favourite album from that time is White Lies - "To Lose My Life". I remember seeing Lady Gaga on TV with a new kind of music. My clothing was still quite preppy, a continuation of the mid-00s. There was panic about the economy and everyone sensed a kind of change. Being European, we too talked a lot about America. Will Obama become the president? And we joked about poor Greece (not fair in my opinion).

Late 2006- very fun but the times were changing music wise
2007- only the first few months were cool
2008- The entire year was good, altho I perfer the later part of the year
2009- Terrible, the economy collapsed and everything that was a staple in the 2000s
was destroyed

I have mixed feelings about the late 2000s. On the upside, the era brought us the mainstream breakthrough of YouTube and online web series in general. The Angry Video Game Nerd, in particular, brought a lot of laughs to my life during my toughest times in high school. Social media was also growing, but it mostly still served the only purpose it needed to at the time - being an alternative to communicating with people in person, not the standard.
I'm not, however, a fan of late 2000s music, for the most part. While there was a bit of an upswing in 2009, most of the late 2000s were just a very washed up continuation of earlier 2000s styles, intermixed with some mostly inoffensive but sometimes horrible rap. World events were pretty bad, too, due to the onset of the Great Recession and the passage of Proposition 8.
Overall, the late 2000s were a lot better than the dreadfulness we're stuck with right now, but they still pale in comparison to the mid and late 90s.

I see these myths repeated time and time again on this board.
The late 2000s set the stage for the early '10s, but people forget that things like modern social media (Facebook and Twitter), smartphones, and electropop didn't define the era other than in the second half of 2009. 2007 was quite a different world as the economy was still pretty good through most of that year. I think if somebody was transported from today back to 2007 or 2008, they would be surprised at how different it actually was.
As for me, I loved the late '00s and early '10s. That period was the best time of my life.

Unfortunately, my luck went south starting in late 2007. Early and mid-2007 were great and fun!
By mid-2009, I hated the trajectory my life was going. Fortunately, now in early April 2017, this long a$$ dark eraI have been in since 2007, is coming to an end. 8) 8)
So, no, I hate the late 00's, for personal reasons. I also hated the music during that era. Music quality in the mainstream 'bottomed out', for me, from 2005 to 2009. Horrible time for music.

This is much how I view the mid '10s (especially 2013 and 2014). I also think mid '10s music was the worst ever. I loved the late '00s and also loved the music. This makes me wonder how much our personal life contributes to whether or not we like a certain time period's culture.

Personal life wise, they were okay. 2007 was a very kickass year for me, but 2008 & 2009 were just meh. It also doesn't help that I was in middle school during this period and going through the awkward changes that coincide with it (my first pimple was not fun :().
Pop culturally was also a mixed bag. I was really into gaming during this period, this was the first half of the 7th generation of consoles. I had a Wii during this time and was really into Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, and Super Smash Bros Brawl! At friends houses I'd play Xbox 360 or PS3 games like COD 4 (hands down one of the best FPS games ever made), COD World at War, Street Fighter IV, Resistance, KillZone 2, Assasin's Creed, etc. This was a pretty bad ass time for gaming, it was pretty exciting seeing HD graphics for the first time. Also this was before the DLC, Microtransaction, bull crap that would plague the second half.
Television was very bleak. Pretty much just a continuation of the Mid 2000's Reality TV craze, and kicked into hyperdrive. Cringeworthy shows like Keeping Up With The Kardashians and My Super Sweet 16 came out during this sh!tty era of television. Many classic Nougthies TV shows like The Sopranos, King of Queens, Malcolm in The Middle, Gilmore Girls, etc. all ended by this point and it just felt like their really wasn't anything to fill the void. Of course you can't forget how the Big 3 Kids Channels were at their worst during this time. DC was milking the Hannah Montana cash dry, Nick became the Spongebob channel & gave two sh!ts about their former programming along with the quality of newer programming, and CN literally sold out by creating the travesty CN Real (also killing of TOONAMI was messed up too).
Movies on the other hand were pretty good during this period. I mean any era of Cinema that has The Dark Knight is automatically good in my book 8)
I'd have to agree with former complaints about the music during this period. It ranged from annoying ass snap rap, to melodramatic screamo garbage. Long were the days of the more bad ass, fun, & cheesy (but in a good way) music of the Late 90's/Early 00's. I do agree that music started to pick up in 2009 though.
Add in the Great Recession, Iraq War surge, and you could tell that this era was the worst part of the decade. However, while I hated it back then, those times certainly do not feel as volatile as today. Plus my personal life back then was decent. I'd give to be in middle school again with less responsibilities (however the teenaged drama from back then could screw itself!).

I read a post where someone thought heavy metal would be popular in the 2010s as a 'backlash' against the softer alternative of the 1990s/2000s ;D

I liked the late 2000s, the music was quite good, especially with Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta, Lady Gaga etc. Definitely a lot better than the stuff that came out in the mid 2010s.
In terms of my personal life, that was the period I was settling into my life in France since I moved there in 2006, as well as becoming a competitive chess player. Nothing to complain there :)

Oui, mais par contre je parle un peu moins bien le français que l'anglais. Surtout que j'avais déjà dix ans quand je m'y suis installé.

The late 2000's were definitely a mixed bag in my life. 2008 was not only a transitional year for pop culture, society, the economy, and politics, but even in my personal life with my new sister being born and my entire house being renovated. The year could really be divided into 2 different worlds. Honestly, I prefer the mid 2000's and the early 2010's over the late 2000's any day, but I'd take the atmosphere and vibe of the late 2000's then over this current dark feel of the mid-late 2010's. 2007 was the only late 2000's year I really enjoyed in my personal life. Still being in elementary school for half the year and playing on my Nintendo DS all the time.
The pop culture of the late 2000's may have had an identity over the mid 2000's especially 2008 with Obama, the Wii, early Youtube, early iPod touch, later Myspace, early Facebook, etc. but that doesn't mean the pop culture of the late 2000's totally beats the mid 2000's in all aspects. Movies were good throughout the late 2000's, arguably better than the mid 2000's, but television was down throughout the late 2000's without a question. Most of my favorite kid stations died in 2007 and I moved on to watching mature shows on networks like G4, MTV, A&E, truTV, ABC Family, , etc. The mid 2000's still had 6th generation gaming too which I'd take any day over 7th generation. Although the late 2000's was the last good time for gaming especially the first half of 7th generation gaming (silver age opposed to the golden 5th & 6th gen ages) with great XBOX 360 and Wii games. By the early 2010's DLC content and advertisements fully took over and shooters became the most dominant focus. Despite the Wii being a lot of people's least favorite Nintendo console (for those who grew up with the N64/Gamecube or earlier) the 1st party games and Mario games were a huge improvement from the Gamecube.
With the exception of good music that I liked as a middle schooler like Crank That - Soulja Boy, Party Like A Rockstar, or Flo Rida - Low, most of the music was weak at the time, but 2007 was still a good year of music for me, but most of 2008 was weak. As someone already stated by the 2nd half of 2009 music started to pick up again. The late 2000's were basically the end of my elementary school years and my entire middle school years. Middle school was the worst times for me throughout my K-12 years with all the peer pressure I went through and all the minor bullying. 6th grade felt like a totally new world and environment compared to 5th grade. From my experience the transition from 5th to 6th grade was much bigger than 8th grade to freshman year of high school no joke. I changed a lot throughout middle school, some were for good reasons, but some were really bad that I totally regret looking back.

Couldn't have said this any better. 2007 was great for my personal life but 2008 and 2009 were lame af. Summer 2009 was a fun summer for my personal life which was the only highlight at the time. 2008 was the most boring year of the late 2000's for me but ironically everybody considers it as their favorite year of the late 2000's pop culturally, even quintessential. I will say though one of the best moments of the late 2000's was witnessing the first African American president Barack Obama get elected and get sworn in office as president in 2009. That inauguration was lit to the max back then with a record crowd in front of the White House. I remember that photo comparing Obama's 2009 inauguration to Trumps 2017 inauguration and I'm like ;D but Trump considers it as "fake news!"

Your 2 points I put in bold were on point.
The late 2000s were the end of my elementary school years (from September 2007 until June 2010, I was in the 3rd to 5th grade). Middle school for me (September 2010 until June 2013) was the worst part of my life. Even though, I faced some bullying in elementary school....I still enjoyed 3rd to 5th grade way more than 6th to 8th grade. The bullying got worst in middle school for me and it only started to die down towards the end. Also, luckily I had a good group of friends in middle school. I agree with you that the transition from 5th to 6th grade was differently bigger than the transition from 8th to 9th grade (Freshman in HS).
The election and 1st inauguration of former President Obama was just 2 epic moments that I'm glad I got to witness first hand. The atmosphere and historical impact was just AMAZING. It's something that I'll NEVER forget.

Childhood experiences: Yes. I played a lot of Crash, Mario, Sonic, and Spyro games, played a lot of computer games, was into Jeff Hardy, and played outside a lot. I thought that 2012 was the year a lot of things "started sucking" for me.
Pop culture: No. For instance, I don't like a lot of music made since the late 90's (like all of the Britney and BSB stuff for example). I especially didn't like Lady Gaga or Soulja Boy.
