Subject: Favorite late 2000s hip-hop?
Written By: bchris02 on 03/23/17 at 12:04 pm
What are some of your favorite rap songs from the late 2000s? Lets keep this focused on the years 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010, since that was when the synth-based sound that dominated the late '00s in hip-hop was prominent. Here are a few of mine.

Since when is 2010 a Late '00s year? '07-'09 late '00s, '10-'12 early '10s.

For hip-hop, the '10s didn't really begin until 2011. The late '00s sound dominated through 2010 and had its last hurrah in 2012 with this song.

The '10s hip-hop sound really began to take off with the song Dance (A$$) by Big Sean in 2011.

The late 2000s were a truly subpar time for rap music. 2009 wasn't terrible, though.

To me 2007 & 2008 had a separate feel of hip-hop compared to 2009 & 2010. Songs from 2007 like Crank That (Soulja Boy), Low (Flo Rida), Party Like a Rockstar (Shop Boyz), or We Taken Over (DJ Khaled) had a different vibe than songs from 2010 like All The Way Turnt Up (Roscoe Dash), Miss Me and Over (Drake), Airplanes (B.O.B.), I'm Back and I Got Your Back (T.I.) or Wiz Khalifa (Black & Yellow).

I was in the 6th grade when that was popular and I've always liked that song. It's a great song.

Yeah, 2007-2008 hip-hop isn't different at all from late 2005-2006 hip-hop. Snap/ringtone rap was the dominant genre across those three years.
Late 2008-2009 is when snap rap suddenly vanished - some would say for the better.
The early/mid/late decade model is helpful sometimes, but falls apart miserably in others. Especially when it comes to music. For instance, even though 2007-mid 2008 are numerically part of the late 2000s, there was no electropop music in sight yet, despite electropop being a very "late 2000s"ish genre.

Let's stick to the numeric time when putting songs and discussing it to avoid confusion. Everyone has different opinions of culture so it would make sense to reference the late 2000s as the actual numeric late 2000s to be objective and avoid debate. Here are my favourites.

Well the title of your thread is "Favorite late 2000s hip-hop?" -- Remember: RAP IS NOT HIP HOP.. Rap is GOOD music. TODAYS HIP HOP is utter trash!!!
Worst music on the radio...... 80s hip hop was good though (Tone loc, etc)

Uh because it is?...??? R&B is part of Hip Hop just as much as rap is. Akon was a Hip Hop/R&B artist. Not to mention Akon is actually rapping in the song, in his own style.

Their similar but, to say apart of? I like to think of them as separate entities. R&B is slower paced while Hip Hop can also be slow paced, isn't as slow as an R&B single.

Well I consider some R&B as part of Hip Hop. Akon certainly is and he also raps in some parts. But some R&B isn't like the Weeknd for example (though some may argue it is). Akon is definitely part of the Hip Hop sphere though. I've always considered him that especially with all the collabs he did with Eminem and other artists.

Sorry for the late response, but I have never read that Akon was considered a Hip-Hop artist. Most of his songs tend to be R&B.

R&B and Hip Hop sometimes blends together. In the case of Akon it definitely did blend together. I've always seen him as a hip hop artist who constantly collabled with rappers too. He is sort of like Nelly was, half rap half R&B. Plus he was rapping in that song too. So I definitely do consider him hip hop.

I see your point. Yeah, there have been singers who collaborate with rappers, but it shouldnt mean that Akon was hip hop. I understand what you're saying though since a few of his songs DID blend both together.

See, I hate it when people overestimate how early '10's 2008 was. These hip-hop songs sound nothing compared to 2011's and 2012's hip-hop. 2008 was a late 2000's year. Period.

I personally think 2008 was very '00s still and I was 21 then. Yeah there was some proto '10s characteristics in 2008, but that doesn't make it 2010s. Most people had flip phones and did not have a smartphone in 2008, and social media wasn't everywhere yet. I still used AIM in 2008 actually. HDTV had just recently become mainstream. Southern rap was still very popular.

Not period. I think late 2008 was early 2010s culturally.

Late 2008 was sort of early 2010s like yeah. Early-mid '08 was clearly more '00s still though I think. Most of 2008 except the last ~3 months is '00s I think.

It was actually the first song I heard from them. It was their 'breakthrough' song mainstream wise, even though they'd been huge on Triple J since 2003.

Exactly. The big changes came in 2009. 2008 was nothing like 2011. The musical sound was different as demonstrated in this thread, politics were very much stuck in the mid 00s, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Kickstarter, Steam and Snapchat were not relevant then. And internet celebrities treated youtube like a alternative outlet rather than a serious platform(uploading videos months/years after their website). 2008 was very much core 00's, just the end of it.

I agree. 2008 didn't feel the same as 2011 let alone 2013. (a transitional year into real 2010's culture) Honestly, by the time we got to like 2012, 2008 was already starting to feel a bit distant.

In 2008-2010, I remember hearing a lot of Lil Wayne and his Cash Money buddies. Drake and Nicky Minaj became big around this time. Remember the song "Bedrock"?
Usher produced two albums over that two-year span. T-Pain, who had risen to prominence in 2005-2007, was beginning to lose favor as autotune wasn't perceived as hip anymore.
I know this thread is about hip hop, but no one can argue that this was the era of Lady Gaga-esque electropop. And let's not forget David Guetta.
Other notable songs:
Day n Nite by Kid Cudi
Airplanes by B.O.B.
Heartless by Kanye West
Dead and Gone by T.I. and Justin Timberlake
