Subject: Playstation 3
Written By: Howard on 11/17/16 at 3:48 pm
Today marks the 10th anniversary that The Playstation 3 had come out and from what I do remember there was a skinny version and a big bulky console which I still own and I'm really enjoying it a whole lot. It gives me what I want such as Netflix, Hulu and Crackle just to name a few. Plus it has The PlayStation Store if you want to purchase things from them. You can either purchase them with a downloadable card or you can pay them with your credit card that's if you have one. If you would like to discuss anything about The PlayStation 3, feel free to put it here.

Probably belongs in the 2010s board LOL
I bought one a few years ago. I haven't played it much. I only played Yugioh and a few PS2 classics on it. I'm waiting for Persona 5 which got delayed again ahh >:(

I remember when the PS3 first came out, the console was between $800-$900. It wasn't actually released here until the 23rd March 2007. I think the sole reason as to why it was so expensive, was because it was/is capable of playing Blu-Ray discs. I really wanted one at the time, but due to the price, I didn't buy a PS3 until Mid 2012. Even when I purchased one in 2012, most PS3s were around the $250-$400 mark.

Only for gaming, on the odd occasion.

I use my Playstation for just 1 game and that is WWE 2K16. All I own is just 1 game and the wrestling game is my fun for when I come home after work and play it during the evening.

I only saw it the old model in my friend's house. I never really played it, though.

This is one of the consoles of my youth, along with the Nintendo Wii. I never bought any of them though, consoles are for people too stupid to use a PC :P
Still gets me how modern stuff of 10 years ago is today. Compare a console from 1997 to 2007, no comparison at all. But 2007-2016-17, not much different.

I don't really find the Wii to be that modern, since it uses an outdated Wi-Fi connection that nobody really uses since the Wii U and 3DS was around. Plus, most consoles from 1997 were played on CDs, which is still the medium format up to this day.

It doesn't belong on the 2010s board because it came out in 2006.

It's slightly dated but not as much as the consoles form 96'/97' were in 2006.

If you were talking about how late 90s consoles didn't have any sort of internet connection, then I get that. But consoles like the PS1 and the Sega Saturn still had compatibility with CDs, which weren't the case for early 90s consoles. Ever since then, video game consoles (except for Nintendo until 2001) have been using CDs as a medium for publishing their video games.

Consoles are nice too. I mean laying on the couch and playing games with some friends within one click of a button is something you can't do with PCs. Consoles have their strengths too, it is nice to have if you just want to relax and play some games. I can see why the more hardcore gamers prefer PCs though.

The PlayStation 3 was kind of when I started to "fall out of love" with gaming, to be honest. Along with the Xbox 360, it marked the beginning of this current era where it takes 10 years to finish games, you have to sit through a 30 minute download and a 20 minute tutorial before you can even start playing something, companies are trying to nickle-and-dime you with repetitive DLC, and my favorite genres (platformers and RPGs) have taken a backseat to monotonous FPS games. Roughly 1986-2004 is my "Golden Age" of console gaming. It's really been all downhill after that.

Technology progressed a lot faster in the 80s and 90s and early 2000s than it has in the past decade. That's why a console from ten years ago still seems rather current. The electronics revolution has gone from huge leaps like introducing portable media players like the VCR and walkman, and bringing the internet to the masses, to making some news apps for smartphones. Which tells me that the electronics revolution of the late 20th century and early 21st is losing its steam.

This is probably because the talent and expertise is moving away from consumer electronics and over to public sector and non-consumer electronics.
If you think about what people like Elon Musk are doing with Space X - that's a huge technological achievement, but it's not for us, the consumer. 10 years ago, there wasn't really any equivalent to these kinds of things.
I think it has a lot to do with the growing problems we're facing as a species - climate change and the like. Bascially, we've got bigger fish to fry than making cooler games consoles.
It's not that there's no electronics or tech revolution, it's just that it's become less visible to civilians like us.
