Subject: What do you miss about the 00s?

Written By: mxcrashxm on 08/01/16 at 7:51 pm

After seeing threads about missing things from the 80s and 90s, I decided to make make one for this decade. So anything goes!

The Video games!

The video games from 2000-Mid 2006, when they were at their peak of color, fun, and creativity, before they turned to casualized hand-holding poorly-built dogshiiiiiiiiit in Late 2006-2009. :P

Yes, I'm still mad how 00s games took a face-heel turn halfway through the decade. :P

There are a LOT of things that I miss from that decade. To start off...

1. Late 2000s YouTube (before Google+ changed everything in 2013).
2. 2004-mid 2009 Nickelodeon
3. Mid-Late 2000s Cartoon Network (most notably City and Noods eras)
4. Classic Boomerang (from Cartoon Network)
5. Golden/Silver Age Disney Channel (2002-2007)
6. My Nintendo Wii (although, it was more late 2000s/early 2010s).
7. Hanging out with my best friends, until they left me in 2012.
8. Having my portable DVD player with me (those things were so much better than tablets IMO).
9. Seeing commercials as awesome and cool, until the 2010s made it terrible.
10. Having Time Warner Cable (before my family switched to Verizon to 2010, but for good reason).
11. Not seeing any sort of GoAnimate videos on YT, as those things are everywhere on the site.

Well... some video games were sort of good in the late 2000s. GTA IV, The Godfather Part II (the game), Saints Row 2, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, etc.

But the good games became slimmer and slimmer, in my opinion.

Well... okay. But I still think the late 2000s had its good share of games.

- When Youtube was more diverse and wasn't ruled by mainly gaming.
- When this whole SJW, Politically Correct, Diverse nonsense wasn't much of a thing  (I'm all up for having a diverse crowd as I've wanted this for years, but the way it's being handled now is just terrible.)
- Games that weren't just FPSs or MOBAs (heck now we got games that're a mix of the two) or Sports. It's like that's all companies know how to make these days.
- Social Media not dominating everything.

It did. I own a lot of Wii, Steam, and Xbox 360 games from the late 2000s. My only issue is that most late 2000s games are FPSs or have shooting as the main mechanic.

The cheesey rock music!

And their cheesey music videos.

MSN and Internet chatting in general.

When 4chan didn't have political clout.

Handheld gaming thriving.

Well... okay. But I still think the late 2000s had its good share of games.

I loved late 2000s in gaming. The shooters were becoming more common, but there were still plenty of non-shooter classics, and online gaming was very exciting for its time.

I really miss that so much. Now since the site has became GamingTube, there's not a lot of people who aren't gamers anymore. Although, I did like seeing people such as the AVGN, it's terrible of what have they became over the past couple years. Nowadays, the site has been surrounded by sh*tty gamers and YouTube drama. I feel like I should've quit YouTube, since it's not that good anymore.

- When this whole SJW, Politically Correct, Diverse nonsense wasn't much of a thing  (I'm all up for having a diverse crowd as I've wanted this for years, but the way it's being handled now is just terrible.)

Pretty much anything related to politics this year is just absurd. Especially this year's presidential election. It makes me lose faith in humanity every time Trump makes a speech or an interview.  :-- Games that weren't just FPSs or MOBAs (heck now we got games that're a mix of the two) or Sports. It's like that's all companies know how to make these days.

Or pretty much mobile games.

- Social Media not dominating everything.

Or when Twitter and Facebook weren't mentioned everywhere. Pretty much any company back then had a decent website, unlike Twitter and Facebook. All they did is just have the companies use a generic profile to have people follow them.

Quite a bit more than I would have thought at the start of this decade...

* Dance Dance Revolution (and rhythm games in general).
* Better fashion; at least emo, scene, etc. weren't pretending to be unique when they weren't, like mid-2010s fashion is. Also, not nearly as many tats or piercings.
* The Internet was highly useful and functional, but it wasn't dumbed down by the trend towards social media yet. Even social media websites in themselves were generally more balanced back in the late 2000s.
* There being a variety of music genera.
* Internet forums being more popular than social media.
* Though the 2000s were certainly not politically incorrect, they at least weren't as polarized or confined as the mid-2010s are.
* Malls still being pretty popular, despite the rise of online shopping websites like Amazon and eBay.
* Simulation video games still being in their prime.
* My high school (though my best semesters were during the beginning of the 2010s).

I miss that YouTube.

There were so many good videos that were around during the late 2000s. Not to mention that you could actually customize your channels. Everything from the background, channel borders, and even how your channel appears. Nowadays, you only have to put a channel banner, since every channel on YouTube is really basic. It's like YouTube never had any creativity after 2012.

The early 2010s layout wasn't that bad. It was kinda basic, but at least you could still do sh*t to it. The modern layout is so basic, that you could only edit your avatar and channel banner. Not to mention that the comment section was really terrible after Google+ was forced into everybody.

The main thing I don't like about YouTube is the ads, and some of the sillier copyright claims, which became more common in 2012/2013. Other than that, it's just the same as it always has been.

2007 was its infancy though, it was still mostly home videos then, not many professional videos.

Yeah, they were mostly home videos though, like Charlie, or Chad Warden etc.

It was before the era of Nigahiga, Shane Dawson and all those YouTube celebrities.

Early 2010s YouTube was pretty bad. Things went downhill after 2010. That light grey/dark theme in 2011 - 2012 was the worst layout in YouTube's history. It didn't look nice to me at all. I also clearly remember people complaining about it and missing the old layout. YouTube was the best in the late 2000s, a good mix fun home videos with informational content.

In late 2012 they changed the layout one more time and never changed it again. I noticed the same thing with Facebook and other web-based social media sites. I think it's because they are focused on their mobile apps now because that's the platform people mostly use it on these days. Since 2013, they have just updated the features on mobile apps now.

But it's not like it was that bad in the early 2010s. I could tolerate what YouTube had during back then, especially with the community. But after 2012, things went into deep sh*t. At least in 2012, you weren't forced into using Google+ that much. In the mid 2010s, you had to face using a sh*tty name because of Google+. Especially with those godawful channel layouts.

Now, I could agree with you that the late 2000s were the greatest time for YouTube. I could never deny that, since I loved the site back then. It had a really great channel layout, the videos were usually 10 minutes or shorter (which meant that you didn't have to be bored for a long time), the channels were awesome, the community was amazing, and you could have a fun time doing stuff on YouTube. However, it's not like the site was immediately bad once 2010 ended. It took a somehow long transition, and I think the early 2010s were possibly the last time where you could enjoy YouTube at some point.

I really missed when YouTube didn't have to deal with so many ads. It felt like once you clicked a thumbnail, you didn't have to expect an annoying ad telling you stupid stuff every time.

Yeah... that thing.  :P Well, to be honest, it does suck that websites are more focused on their mobile apps, since pretty much everyone has one. Although, it sucks for pretty much anybody who uses desktops and older mobile phones. For one thing, people who have older mobile phones can't get the full experience, so they're stuck with whatever they have. It's worse if they have a flip phone. As for computer users, it's kinda lonely dealing with a very blank homepage on most sites nowadays. I really miss when websites had cool designs, instead of just having the same simplistic white design everywhere.

Since there's too many posts to respond to, I'll just make a new one here. Yeah, I agree! Their late 00s era and the layout was much better than today. I may use the site to still watch videos, but not as much as before because of the unnecessary changes.

Here's a photo of the old YouTube layout. I'm sure all of us are nostalgic for it.

Good times with my friends and especially with my cousin. From 2003-2009. From 2000-2002 I was a bit of a loner I mean not even one real friend. I hung with my sis and cousins but not actually going anywhere and doing anything.  But in those first 3 years I really miss music. Pop was actually a great genre then. And the Pop Rock stuff. Some great Alt and Post Grunge bands came out too.

YouTube in its first few years, 2005-2009. The 2010's haven't been all that great. I miss when James Video game nerd was first one. He was awesome! Google+ I hate!
2004-2009 Nick was great! When things slowed down and All That wasn't as good I stopped watching. But Zoey 101 was a nice refreshment. A return to good Nick. Not like the golden days at all but Zoey and then Drake & Josh. Unfabulos was okay. I liked Ned's Declassified alright. But #1 for me back then was Drake & Josh. I wasn't into icarly very much or Victorious. I know those were on loner past 2009 though.

Ned's Declassified and Drake & Josh would always be my favorite live-action Nickelodeon shows. I thought iCarly was cool, but it went a bit stale during the later seasons. Mostly Seasons 6 and 7 (except for the series finale).

Adding in what everyone else said. I definitely miss:

The Hip-Hop and R&B
Pop-Punk and other rock music
Video games being generally amazing and the diversity
Nick and Disney being wonderful
Less mass shootings and bombing attacks
A variety of movie genres
Social Media having fantastic designs
Commercials actually being watchable
Adult Swim being awesome
Old YouTube
Some of the fashion
Technology not taking over (I'm tech savvy, but I wouldn't mind not having many gadgets)

I miss my innocence, no, not sexual virginity, I mean literal innocence.

The 2010's really made me lose my bubbly, optimistic, outlook on life. 2000 to 2007 were really innocent for me, 2008 was mostly innocent, then 2009, things really got dark. They're not that bad now, but the 00's was the last innocent decade in my personal life.

Well, Google didn't f*ck it up that much until 2012/13. They made YouTube look okay for a few years, then they just thought it was decent enough to redesign the whole interface of it. But honestly, YouTube's past seems to be ignored, considering of how so much little kids and preteens use the site. Especially when most of them were just babies when YouTube was still new back then.

Well, I discovered the site in mid 2007. So, it's not like I actually watched most of the mainstream videos by then. I would usually watch Fred, Smosh, and a bunch of other guys that I found interesting. I think YouTube's community didn't have to deal with so much crap until late 2011.

I watched my first Michael Moore documentary in 2004 lol.

YouTube did not only start to get downhill in 2012. There were problems before that. The Google Plus comment integration didn't even bother me that much compared to the awful content and how money hungry the site got ever since Google took over. I wish the original owners haven't sold it. It would probably still be a great site today if that didn't happen.

Even then, Google would still be interested into buying YouTube. So, I wouldn't think that the original owners wouldn't keep their website for a while. Just because they sold YouTube to Google, that doesn't mean it was that bad after it was owned by them. They still had the cool features, amazing content, and a decent community. It's not like they asked for armageddon in 2006 (the year Google bought YouTube).

The day YouTube was sold was the day it started going downhill. It wasn't overnight, but it got worse over time.

But even when they sold YouTube to Google, the site was still at its infancy. I haven't even known about the site until 2007, and that's when most YouTube regulars started their first accounts there. So with all due respect, it didn't really matter that much.

It doesn't matter. If the selling of the site didn't happen, YouTube would be much better. Google has removed the star rating system and integrated ads then change the layout, etc. It slowly started going downhill even when Google bought it. The only good thing about the buy is that YouTube was rapidly expanding after that and more videos were available. But that could have happened without the buy as well.

Well, considering that Google advertised YouTube so much after the buy, YouTube wouldn't really be that popular if they didn't bought it. It would be as forgotten as Newgrounds or other websites in the 2000s, if it wasn't for Google. I know that they ruined the website, but it's not like anyone could blame them after the buy. If you went back in 2006, people wouldn't really care since they wouldn't know what YouTube was back then.

A lot of people did know about YouTube in 2006. I certainly did and most of the people I follow created their accounts in 2006. YouTube became big and popular in 2006. I would actually be very surprised if someone did not know what YouTube was in mid 2006.

Well, YouTube wasn't that big during 2006. Not even in late 2006. In the late 2000s, there were already spoofs of YouTube on entertainment sources. I even remember watching a Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends episode where it parodied YouTube as Viewtube. Along with South Park, which made an episode of Butters being a famous YouTube celebrity, along with showing some of the viral people during one of the scenes.

YouTube was big in 2006 though.... I was just 11 years old in 2006 and even I was using it and my friends were too. It was a fun site to be on in 2006 for funny videos and there are a lot of video uploads and popular users from 2006. You may not remember because you were younger, but YouTube was still very popular in 2006. It wasn't like Facebook where the first 3 years of its existence was only used by a niche market. YouTube was the most popular video sharing site by mid 2006. Everyone should have heard of it by mid to late 2006. I'm surprised some of you only discovered it in 2007. Now if we were talking about 2005, then I agree it wasn't popular at all that year.

You probably heard of Smosh? The very popular YouTuber today. Well he was making many videos in 2006. Here is a video of his from 2006:

I was only 7 and a half when I discovered YouTube, and even then it seemed bigger than what it was in 2006. You probably thought that because you were one of their visitors for the site until Google bought it. Sure, it did have the first viral videos, but it wasn't that popular until the following year. It was probably because Google didn't advertise YouTube that much until they bought in late 2006, but even then people wouldn't care. I suppose it became huge in 2007, because that was the first full year when Google controlled YouTube, and that the news already featured YouTube from several events. It's not like everyone in the whole world heard of it by mid-late 2006. You didn't have Canada's YouTube until 2007, which was when most countries started to have their own content outside of the United States.

I live in Canada and I used YouTube in 2006. YouTube was still popular in 2006 even before Google bought it. It was popular among all other social networking sites at the time like MySpace, Nexopia, Flickr, etc. I would know, I was hanging out with people who were on YouTube in 06'. It was far from an unknown website.... It only grew bigger the years after. But it's not like 2007 is the year everyone heard of YouTube, that would go to mid to late 2006. It was a big deal when YouTube was bought by Google in October 2006, everyone heard of it. Here is an article from 2006 discussing the purchase.

The early 2010s were kinda like the last innocent era in my personal life, although 2012 was when things started to get really dark for me.

Well, I discovered the site in mid 2007. So, it's not like I actually watched most of the mainstream videos by then. I would usually watch Fred, Smosh, and a bunch of other guys that I found interesting. I think YouTube's community didn't have to deal with so much crap until late 2011.

I don't remember when I first heard of Youtube. I didn't pay too much attention. I definitely heard of it becoming hugely popular in mid to late 2006. Definitely. I think maybe late 2005 was when I heard bits and pieces about Youtube. But it had not reached its pure popularity until somewhere in 2006.

Smosh was one of YouTube's first celebrities, but even then they only had thousands of fans during late 2005 and 2006. In the late 2000s, their subscriber count went up pretty fast. Especially when they reached over a million subscribers in 2009.

Yes of course it grew throughout the late 2000s and it continues to grow. But the point is almost everyone heard of YouTube by 2006. It was the most popular video site at the time. It would be hard not to hear about it if you were frequently on the internet. Many people were using it at the time.

It even says in the video of the article I showed you from 2006 "YouTube.com, a video sharing website that soon has become all the rage online". It even says how YouTube has partnered up with media groups and millions of people watch it each day. Take a look at the video.

The early 2010s layout wasn't that bad. It was kinda basic, but at least you could still do sh*t to it. The modern layout is so basic, that you could only edit your avatar and channel banner. Not to mention that the comment section was really terrible after Google+ was forced into everybody.

and they force you to joining Google Plus. ::)

I really missed when YouTube didn't have to deal with so many ads. It felt like once you clicked a thumbnail, you didn't have to expect an annoying ad telling you stupid stuff every time.

You had to watch a 30 second commercial. ::)

I really miss Vevo when it was one of those cool YouTube alternatives. I remember having an account there, since they had longer video time limits than YouTube.

Well, if you lived in North America, then everybody has probably heard of YouTube by then. But not worldwide, where people had to use the United States' version of YouTube. It wasn't until 2007, when several countries made their versions of YouTube. Especially when NBC is an American company, it's not that surprising that they meant by people who were living in the United States, and probably some other countries who spoke English.

YouTube was the most popular video site at the time worldwide as well, not just the U.S. I'm not denying that it didn't grow bigger after, but in 2006 YouTube was still a popular video site used by the world. It was just used mainly for funny videos and vlogs. It had the handle "Broadcast Yourself". YouTube's popularity was the equivalent of all social media sites below MySpace at the time.

Well, YouTube wasn't really that diverse until 2007, or late 2006 at the earliest. But even then, a lot of people including myself wouldn't know what YouTube is until 2007. Especially in various countries, when they localized their own YouTube.
