Subject: 2008: The Year Music Died

Written By: doublejm1 on 07/05/16 at 12:52 am

Is it me, or did music go downhill after 2007?

Artists like T-Pain and Rihanna dropped their most successful albums to date that year, but never seemed as good thereafter. In Rihanna's case, getting beaten by Chris Brown probably had something to do with that. As for T-Pain, I haven't heard him come out with anything noteworthy in years. Is he still in the music business?

I know that post-2007, we saw the resurgence of Lil Wayne, and the music world was introduced to his buddies Drake and Nicki Minaj. David Guetta and Calvin Harris also did their part to make electro dance/pop the "it" thing.

Nelly Furtado, who had us dancing to "Promiscuous" and "Say It Right," has fallen off the map. And Justin Timberlake focused on movies for a while before releasing The 20/20 Experience.

A lot has been made of the so-called ring tone rap of the mid 2000s, but I think today's rap is even worse. Rappers like Future all sound the same, and you can hardly understand what they're saying. Future is known to mumble in his songs.

In 2006, we had Rihanna, T-Pain, Chris Brown, Kanye, and Kelly Clarkson topping the charts. Now we have Drake, Future, Bieber, Taylor Swift, and Selena Gomez.

Don't know about you, but I miss the mid-2000s cohort.

What's your take?

Actually no... 2008 was for the most part the same musical era as 2007 and late 2006, and while 2007 was better than 2008. It didn't go completely downhill.
I thought that the music was actually A LOT better from 2009-2011 than 2006-2008. Hip Hop music for example was VERY good during the early 10s. Now however, it is kinda crap tho.

I feel this would be a better discussion, if the late 00s were being compared with the early 10s solely. It feels like the OP is comparing the late 2000s music with both the early and mid 10s.

Music died in 2012 for me.

I will say that 2008 was easily one of the blandest and most forgettable years in music prior to the mid-2010s. I was just marathoning through a bunch of hit compilations I handcrafted in iTunes, and the three albums representing 2008 were all among my least favorite. Besides there being an extreme lack of melodic complexity or originality, most songs around that year had rather bland production. The Timbaland golden age pretty much winded down after "4 Minutes," even though plenty more songs emulated his style afterwards. This was before the takeoff of early-2010s electropop, but well after the peak of 2000s-style urban. A good number of productions just sounded cheap. Even Mariah Carey's E=MC2 was painfully average. You could also tell rock was about to die for good; although you had some good songs like "All Around Me" (which was technically made in 2005), most of it puts me to sleep. Even indie rock wasn't at its best this year; you had Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend's debut, but the year was still a weak follow-up to 2007. Although there weren't nearly as many downright unlistenable hit songs as there were in late 2005 and 2006, the real standouts were few and far in-between. Things started to pick up towards the end of the year with Lady Gaga's The Fame and Kanye West's 808's & Heartbreak, but overall, 2008 was easily one of the weaker years for music of the 2000s.

I used to joke about how we need a new Elvis, or Michael Jackson, or Mozart, or Beethoven. But this time I mean it. We need a new big name to jolt and shock the music industry out of this 'blah' period we've been through the past sixteen years, or whatever.

The music industry needs a musical genius to up the game, and change the game. Bring music to a new plateau. Whoever this new musical genius is, she, or he, or they, might not come until 2020, or after. Or, it may be decades.

How could have music died in 2008 when it became great again in 2009? 2008 was just a down year compared to 2007 & 2009 in between.

I'll say this, from 2005-2008, 2007 was really the only high quality year for music in that span. Although, hip-hop and R&B music throughout the mid 2000's were still epic though. Overall, I still think 2009-2011 have been the best years for music in this modern era so far, and while a lot of people on these threads don't want to admit it, the second half of 2013 and 2014 was a damn good period for music as well.

Just because some celebrity died, that doesn't mean the music industry was entirely crappy throughout the year. Besides, 2009 had some really great hits.

Agreed bro. Mainstream music from the core 00s with the exception of 2007 was kinda lackluster. But the hip hop and R&B music from the mid-late 00s was still damned good! Depending on what demographic you are, your thoughts on the core 00s music will differ. For example, If you weren't into the hip hop and R&B music, then well I could understand you trashing the core 00s music.

Michael Jackson's passing was a shocking tragedy, but at the same time, he was well, well past his prime and his reputation was gradually deteriorating due to personal scandal. I'd argue 1959, 1970, and 1980 were by far the worst years for music-related deaths just because those who lost their lives that year were only just blossoming and could have made such an enormous impact had they not been taken from the world sooner. 1994, 1996, and 1997 can be considered dishonorable mentions, but the sheer number of passings in the former 3 years is just overwhelming to think about.

2010 was a very HUGE year for music. It wasn't just about Kesha or Lady Gaga. The hip hop music that year was really big as well, and 2010 was the last FULL year before trap became popular in late 2011/early 2012.  2010 was definitely a special year for music looking back. Even a lot of music that game out from that year you still hear at big events today. DJ Khaled "All I Do Is Win", Katy Perry's Teenage Dream Album which included Firework, Eminem Not Afraid and Love the Way You Lie, B.O.B. Airplanes, and much more.

I absolutely loved Ke$ha. She's one of the only musicians from the 2010s that I actually like. I wish she made more songs.

Me too. It was very fun danceable music that's fun to drive to and sing along with. :D

So? It's not like she's as terrible as Miley Cyrus (post-2013) and pretty much anybody who obsesses over trap music nowadays.

Ironically, as bad as Miley Cyrus has been, rather she played as Hannah Montana or how bad her songs were from 2013-present, I have to admit her 2009 and 2010 songs were actually the only GOOD moments about her. Party in the USA and Can't Be Tamed were actually decent and I wish that was the only version of Miley Cyrus that ever existed and she'd be a lot more respectable for me.

I heard Dynamite on the radio today. One of my favourite prom songs :D

I think Black & Yellow is still my favourite hip hop song. IDK though, I haven't listened to much hip hop after the mid-2000s. :o

I loved ALL of those songs from 2010, especially Black & Yellow. I remember when the Steelers played the Packers in the Super Bowl back in 2011, and everybody who was supporting the Steelers kept playing Black & Yellow over and over again, even though the Packers ended up winning. Black & Yellow and Roll Up were the first two songs I ever heard from Wiz Khalifa. See, not only 2010 was an amazing year for music, it was the year a lot of new artists who started in the late 2000's hit their peak (Katy Perry, Drake, Wiz Khalifa) and some minor comebacks occurred (Eminem). I could come up with so many artists from hip-hop, r&b, electropop, and dance pop who had huge albums throughout that year.

I love Kesha too! :D Her song came on while I was driving and I had to really slow down and be more cautious because I couldn't help but dance in my seat. Those university freshman year vibes. She's cheesey, but I like cheesey and goofy songs, so it works for me. ;D

You mean these two cheesy duos?  8-P  But it was still catchy tho!

T2dPA2dCRNY

I think Katy Perry's California Gurls was her only song from that year I didn't like (although that music video was bizarre when it first came out), but the rest like Teenage Dream (song), E.T., and Fireworks I really enjoyed.

2008 was a pretty dreadful year for music. Personally, I don't like any of the Top-40 singles which were released that year. "Single Ladies" by Beyonce is the worst out of a 'bad bunch', in my opinion. Although, if I had to decide on when I believe music 'died', I would probably say 1999. I do like a few songs which were released between 1999-2004, but generally, music did go downhill after 1998...

I actually liked those two songs and I am not the biggest fan of Eminem and I don't care for Rihanna's music that much.

That was pretty much one of the only things I've focused on for music in 2008. I've used to enjoy Poker Face when that song was released. It reminds me of my phase with Lady Gaga in late 2008/2009. I didn't really listen to her music that much after 2010.

The first time I heard about Lady Gaga was around October 2008 and they were playing her song "Just Dance" on the radio. I did like it at the time because it sounded catchy and fresh. I remember Katy Perry being popular in the summer and me thinking her song "I Kissed a Girl" was very weird. Rihanna released a couple songs that year too. I remember that year was when music started getting more fast and upbeat, but not in a good way. I definitely agree 2008 is when music started to go really bad.

2008 was a pretty crap year for American music. Mind you, my experience of music in 2008 wasn't all that bad, as the Australian music scene had remained quite strong and there were a fair few notable releases (some of which are below). The one thing I generally didn't like about music at the time, however, was the then current state of rock music. It actually felt as though rock music had run it's trajectory and was on its last legs, which as a fan of rock, was a horrible feeling. However, with all that said, I don't think 2008 was the year music died. While mainstream music had gradually declined each year since the Late '90s, it wasn't until 2012 that it really felt as though music had died, in my opinion.

The way you feel about 2008 in music, is how I feel about 1999 in music. Although my hate of mainstream music was in stages, looking back at the past.

Look back at 1999 and 2000, there were decent songs on the radio. I feel the same about 2001. So 1999 to early 2002 music was 'okay' for me, but there were already signs that music quality was going down, in my opinion. And by mid 2002, I hated mainstream music, although there okay songs in early 2002.

This pretty much sums up how I feel about the mid '10s.  There were still some songs I liked on the radio but I found myself liking less and less of what was popular.  I loved the electropop era.  In the mid '10s, I still liked hip-hop and some EDM, but really didn't like teen pop or disco revival.

I would say 2013 was the year the music died.

It wasn't too bad IMO, although as I briefly touched upon in an earlier post, it was the first year in which you could tell that the genre was on its last legs (at least from a mainstream perspective). These would have to be my favourite rock songs from 2008:
