It really does, though it also has a vaguely psychedelic feel to it a la the 60s.
I Miss The Misery by Halestorm came out in 2012, but the sound` easily fits in around 2003.

That song reminds me a lot of flyleaf. If I never knew, I'd think it was from 2005.
What do you see as the oldest genuine 90s sounding song? Core 90s not Y2K 90s.

Probably this, it's from 2007 but sounds like it could be from the mid-to-late 90s.

There are still a lot of rock bands who have stayed true to their 2000s sound, even though the style has not been mainstream since 2010.
If we're strictly talking about songs that made a significant mainstream chart impact, I would say these:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJzBcKM3ZIE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pflARrGZqOw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu1aQvm5MrU
I know that the Foo Figthers' Wasting Light was a pretty popular album in 2011, especially for "Rope," which topped the Rock chart, but it still didn't have pop crossover success like "Big Me," "Learn to Fly," and even "Best of You" did.
This song sounds like it could be from the 90s, it came out in 1985

It sounds pretty standardly 80s, to be honest. That type of punk sound was common even at the turn of the decade.

There's a quite a lot of older Punk and Alternative songs from the 80's that could pass for 90s.

Except that the song is called 80s. It's the Title of the song. It's about the 80s...Think about that for a minute please.
That song is British new wave 100%, a genre of music that is 100% 80s. If anything, I might see it as a 1979 release, but it does not sound 90s. At all. And smites for this thread which has drawn me into yet another stupid fudgeing decadeology debate.

How the hell is this thread related to decadeology? We were talking about songs that sound like those from the 2000s.

Man, I love that song. Or, really, any song by R.E.M. pretty much ever. Murmur in particular is awesome, though. I feel like Michael Stipe was at his absolute best when you couldn't understand what the hell he was saying. ;D
Pretty much everything that came out of the "Athens Scene" in the '80s would've sounded right at home in the '90s. Remember this classic?

Wow, didn't realise opinions could be wrong. ::)
Isn't that why they're called opinions and not facts? :)

What would be the newest pop/rap/R&B song to sound like it's from the '00s?

It sounds more like it's from 2000, and it's clearly a tribute to the Y2K era.

All I mean is that the song I was talking about doesn't sound like it's from 2002 because of subtle differences between 2000 and 2002.

It reminds me of songs like Overprotected by Britney Spears and Girlfriend by NSYNC, both of which came out in 2002.

The only aspect of it that sounds truly Y2K-ish, imo, is the use of synth guitar hits in the backdrop. The majority of the song actually sounds closer to something from the mid-2000s because of its repetitive, monotonous melodic progression and starkly percussive instrumentation, but even then, it can still be reasonably compared to more recent pop songs like "Thrift Shop."

I agree but I don't think it sounds like mid 00s either. I think it sounds like a typical modern pop song that tries too hard to sound old.

I hear their song "Footsteps" on the radio, and all this time I thought it was a Shinedown song from like 2005.
Also, does anyone think Kelly Clarkson's "Heartbeat" song sound more like it should belong in 2008/9?

It probably doesn't come as a surprise, but Blink 182's latest release "Bored To Death" sounds like something from 2001 or 2002. IMO, if the music video was filmed in 4:3 standard definition, it would genuinely look and feel like an Early 2000's song.

Not really. A lot of the other songs on the album totally sound like they could be from 1999 but Bored to Death sounds more like 2007-2009-ish.

I refuse to say anything good about McFly, Busted or any of their related projects. 8-P
And Our Lady Peace has always sucked. No thank you. I've always felt that they pioneered that Nickelback "Made in Canada" Post-Grunge sound.

That's so racist against Canadians. I guess there's no point in asking what you think about the new Sum 41 song. >:(
The new Jimmy Eat World song though?

War totally sucks! It sounds like the 2010's trying to remake crappy 2000's songs.
It's decent. Sounds like something from 1996-ish. I've heard better from J.E.W. but I've never been too disappointed with them, just their newer albums don't have the same effect on me as Static Clarity to Bleed American.

Maybe this song? "Hallelujah" by The Rubens, an Aussie band. It was released in 2015 and was actually fairly successful down here.I don't think this song would have sounded too out of place if it had of been released in the Mid-Late 2000s. What do you think?

September by Daughtry was the most recent to get widespread popularity on Top 40.
