Subject: 2008: Closer to 2001 or 2016?

Do you think 2008 was closer culturally to 2001 or 2016?

It's a doozy. I mean, why does it matter so much if 2008 is either closer to 2001 or 2016. 2001 was 7 years close from 2008, but it barely had any similarities. Not to mention that 2001 was rather more 90s than 2000s. 2008 is noticeably dated from 2016. You didn't have tablets, proliferation of iPhones, or barely anything that was popular in the 2010s. It was more related to 2003-2007, since the year had similar culture to those years.

Stylistically, it's closer to 2001, but technologically, it's more like the present. More or less, everything standard today already existed in some form back in 2008. 2001, on the other hand, was still a VHS year and well before social media, YouTube, and Wikipedia picked up.

It really is in the middle. Lifestyle wise, I'd say most people in 2008 lived more like in 2001 than 2016, because smartphones were not yet relevant. But like #Infinity said, most technology of 2016 was available in some form in 2008, so if you always lived on the cutting edge, I can see why 2008 and 2016 feel very similar to you.

I think 2008 is closer culturally to 2016, even though it is closer numerically to 2001. But this is because I was 6 years old in 2001 and 13 in 2008, huge difference lol. So I probably have a personal bias in this.

I would have to say it's closer to 2001 for many reasons. One, the 00s atmosphere was still in full force (Yes, while 2001 definitely had 90s elements, it also certainly had the 00s environment as well). Two, technology was not as advanced as it is now. Three, the music, fashion and the movies/TV shows were still in that 00s style. Four, social media was only pretty much Myspace, AIM and MSN. Yeah Facebook was already rising and all, but it didn't completely take over Myspace until late 2009.

I'd say closer to 2001 than 2016 overall.
Now if it had been 2009, it might have been a different story... :o ;)

Well 2008 was the year things started to change into 2010s culture. Late 2008 was very different from early 2008.

Well yeah, but it wasn't as prevalent as 2009 did to 2010s culture.
