Subject: do you feel 2006 was a meh year?
Written By: sonic2005 on 03/18/16 at 6:00 am
I mean 2006 was a good year for me personally and some good things came out of it (youtube in its prime, 360,ps3,wii taking off) but looking back the movies were kind of lackluster, the music was getting worse, a lot of tv channels were beginning to go downhill (CN was getting rid of its city era, Disney channel just crashed and burned this year, nick was still decent) overall it just seemed like nothing remarkable happened this year idk what do you think guys?

2006 was the worst year for music in the entire '00s decade. That was the year of songs like "Laffy Taffy" and "Chain Hangs Low." There isn't much that came out that year that has really stood the test of time.
Other than music though it was a decent year. It was the last year that the economy was strong. Movies and TV were pretty good that year. The mid '00s were an excellent time for horror movies and I really prefer them over today's horror movies that are primarily centered around jump scares. 2006 was the last year that in my opinion had cultural ties to the '90s.
In terms of tech, in 2006 if you had Facebook you were probably a college student. MySpace was king and the year was really the peak of emo culture. YouTube was new and exciting and was mostly short amateur recordings of people doing stupid stuff as opposed to channels like you have today.

We already had so many 2006 threads and I've already explained many times how epic my personal life was during this year, especially that summer, which includes YMCA camp, Georgia Aquarium, Savannah GA, Disney World for a whole week, my first family reunion, etc. I also got a Nintendo DS, Mario Kart DS, and New Super Mario Bros. this year which is when I started playing online with people for the first time. 2006 was the last full year my childhood was at its peak, but at the same time it was the weakest year pop culturally of the 2000's. The movies weren't that good with very few exceptions and the kid culture got watered down big time throughout the year as well.

Everything after 2003 was complete garbage. The real 2000's are such sh!tty times that I don't even know how to describe it. 2006 is alright if you like wing hair douchebags.

2006 was basically lame. Although, I did like early 2006. It was like an extension towards 2005. It was also the last year where I watched Nick Jr. and Playhouse Disney. Possibly because of how much I grew older into watching Nick, Cartoon Network, Jetix, and Discovery Kids at the time. I could even agree with people in this forum saying it was really weak on pop culture, as it barely had anything new. There's one thing that I like about 2006. At least it wasn't terrible as the early-mid 2010s years.

No, I first played online with Mario Kart DS in 2006 (take note that Nintendo DS is part of 7th gen) and I didn't get an XBOX 360 until late 2011 along with Call of Duty Black Ops and a couple other games. My first 6th generation console was the Gamecube for my 7th birthday.

Well he's not saying that 2006 had a lot of ties to the early 2000s. I think he's just saying that 2006 was the last year to have any ounce of early 2000's cultural ties. Last year to have any noticeable amount of early 2000s culture was 2004 and even that was mainly a core 2000s year.

As for an on-topic reply. 2006 was an alright year to me. It was the year I got Kingdom Hearts 2 which is one of my favorite games of all time. But even on the gaming side the year was very disappoint. The Wii and PS3 released in 2006 with very little to offer in terms of good games to me. Sonic 06 released that year and gone of record as one of the worst games of all time. Zelda Twilight Princess released and was somewhat controversial to Zelda fans for its overly dark style. Movie wise I really can't think of any good movies from 2006 (or at least any that I was interested in). I didn't care for 2006 music. And I didn't care for 2006 cartoons or TV shows.
In terms of personal life the year was somewhat "meh". It wasn't bad by means, but wasn't as good as my life in 2005.

Yeah, but 2006 was more core '00s than 2004.
Well yeah I understand that. 2006 was mainly a core '00s year. I'm not very good at making percentages, but overall 2004 is probably around 85% Core 2000s and around 15% early 2000s culturally. While 2006 is less than 5% early '00s culturally.

I didn't care for 2006 music. And I didn't care for 2006 cartoons or TV shows.
2006 did have Shakira - Hips Don't Lie and Jay-Z - Show Me What You Got which were really good songs, but I agree that the majority of the mainstream songs weren't as good that year.
2006 was probably the first year cartoons started coming out that I would no longer consider as apart of my childhood. In fact the majority of cartoons that started during the second half of 2005 and onwards I didn't like at all. It's funny how Ben 10 was the last cartoon that premiered that I associate with my peak childhood, which came out during Christmas break of 2005!

I didn't care for those songs, but they aren't bad at all. More just that I wasn't interested in Shakira and Jay-Z during that year. In 2006 I didn't like any of the music for some strange reason. In 2005 I liked cartoons like Avatar, Cat scratch, and Ben 10. And I will admit that My Gym Partner's a monkey and Camp Lazlo are guilty pleasures of mine. To me 2005 was the last decent 2000s year for cartoons. I can't think of any 2006 cartoons that I liked. 2006 was probably the most blandest year of the decade for me. By 2007 things started to get a bit more interesting.

2003 and 2008 were half core 2000's.
Remember that I'm terrible with trying to make percentages that explain how much early, core, late a year was culturally. But yeah I view the core 2000s as 2003-2008 with 2004-2007 being the main core years and 2003/2008 being core 2000s only partially.

This is what I meant. 2006 didn't have a lot of cultural ties to the late '90s and early '00s but it still had some, which was my point. Things like 6th gen gaming, many of the TV shows, Windows XP, alpha-male culture, and CD stores like Sam Goody are a few of the things I am thinking of. It was also the last year the economy was good before it started to slide into the Great Recession. 2007 was still a decent year economically but by that point we knew where we were headed. In 2006, we were still in a boom with no talk of recession.

The majority of those are strictly early 2000s, or at least not distinctly late 90s. The sixth generation of gaming and Windows XP are like the quintessential technologies of the 2000s; I know you place a lot of emphasis on Windows 7 and the seventh generation of gaming, but those filtered largely into the 2010s and weren't cleanly confined to the 2000s decade. The only obvious "late 90s" show off the top of my head that was still on television in 2006 was 7th Heaven.

People frosted their tips and listened to Nu Metal in 2000-2002. They also wore chain wallets and had discmans with dial-up 98 computers.
In 2006 everyone had stupid winged haircuts, listened to sh!tty faux-Emo (that didn't have cool Hip Hop feuds) and played 50 Cent Bulletproof on their PSPs. Zelek, you are right. The real 00's were 100,000,000 years away from 2000/2001/2002.

Lies! This is wrong! You should stop spreading misinformation on the internet. Everybody knows that nobody spiked their hair in 2006. People preferred the wings haircut, listened to fiddy cent and wore skinny jeans. We were closer and closer to 2009-2012 in 2006 than the glorious 1998-2002. 2006 people don't even know how to use hair bleach nor do they know how to bend brims and take stickers off their hats.

We were closer and closer to 2009-2012 in 2006 than the glorious 1998-2002. 2006 people don't even know how to use hair bleach nor do they know how to bend brims and take stickers off their hats.
For a while I used to think people with spiky hair were always threatening. One of my aunts used to have spiky hair throughout the entire 90's, and she was tuff on us growing up, even though she no longer had spiky hair by the 2000's but she still always had it short though.

I guess it's not unheard of for women to have it, but that's pretty rare.
In 2006 women were still dressing like Avril Lavigne and JoJo. That's even more ties to the early 2000s.

Haha, you'd be freaked out by me then! I used to have spiky green hair in the 90's. I don't dye it anymore but the spikes remain. When I was a kid, before I had spiky hair, I had one of those stupid parted haircuts (during the early-mid 90's) but then I discovered bands like Green Day and I changed my look. Your aunt sounds pretty funny. I imagine you having one of those really tough aunts with a bunch of tattoos and a motorcycle.

I said that she had short spiky hair throughout the 90's, not 2000's. She just had regular short hair throughout the 2000's and still does now. You didn't know that SOME women had spiky hair too? It was probably more common throughout the 80's but I'm not 100% sure.

2002 Avril and 2004 Avril look the same to me. Straight hair and black eyeliner overdose with tanktops was the thing, pretending to be a rebel punk rawkerr princess. JoJo put a mid-2000s spin on Avril's early 2000s style, but they're both building on the Spirit of '02.
For dudes everyone copied whatever David Beckham was doing, until 2007ish when Naruto, Bleach and Death Note became popular and everyone was obsessed with Japan, and YouTube made it easy to access content from there. Then everyone wanted to dress like a Japanese rock star. That mophead looks very West Coast. The fashion capitals of the continent (Toronto and Montreal) never followed that :P :P

The thing I kinda liked about 2006 was the feeling of major transition and crossover. As other threads have mentioned, it was like the bridge from old school to new school.
For instance, you had Y2K era-looking PowerPC Macs...
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/62/IBook_G4.jpg
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fa/Apple-eMac-FL.jpg
...appearing side-by-side with late 00s-looking Intel Macs.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5a/IMac_20inch_Aluminum.jpeg
That's what made 2006 look like a barrier between the mid and late 2000s. In the first portion, it felt like late 2004/2005. In the second portion, it felt like 2007 was coming soon.

For me, 2006 was the year that I got released from boarding school (which I hated) in July and had a gap year from July 2006 to Sept 2007. So in my personal life it was definitely a "meh" year and that seems to tie in with the actual culture of the year too.
I was so overwhelmed with being released from boarding school that I didn't really do much with my life. I wish I had done, I wish I had the confidence as a teenager to have done something rather than just go to community college and follow ICT studies. The thing is, going to that boarding school kept me away from society and as a result I was unsure of what people would make of me, I was quite afraid to venture into the outside world.
Part of the reason I am on these boards is to try to recapture as much of the years of 2006-2010 as possible because I don't remember that much myself other than being a shy teen and feeling like things will "work out" when I was older instead of taking the initiative at the time and forcing the issue. As such things never really "worked out" in the end anyway.
In some ways I wish I could go back in time as my older self and guide my younger self on what to do.
It's funny how ya'll say 2006 was a transitional year culturally as it was also a very transitional year for me in my personal life as well. The air was thick with the atmosphere of change. The old side by side with the new as with the computers.

There was green twinkies, green ketchup and then there were rumours about green chicken nuggets. I've now come to realize why everyone calls the early 2000s a dark era :-\\
The worst thing that ever happened in the early 00's were those god damn Shrek Twinkies. Wait, never mind. That was mid 00's. Nothing bad happened in the early 00's. ;)

IIRC, Shrek Forever After was released in May 2010, which was in the early 2010s. But they could still do Shrek food merchandise ever since the first movie was released. ::)

Generations are the only topic ever talked about on Personality Cafe. :P
However, different opinions (in regards to generations) are never really received too well. I suggested that Generation Z should start in 2001 and that at the end of the day, people born between 1995-2001 can consider themselves to be the tail-end of Gen Y, a Gen Y/Z cusp or Early Gen Z. However, my opinion was immediately shot down and it has since turned into an unnecessary argument over something which isn't even important. I still regularly post on Personality Cafe, however I am seriously starting to consider leaving the website for good. InThe00s is a better website, in my opinion.

I agree. When I was on Personality Cafe, it looked pretty unbalanced. While I liked the Generations forums, I actually liked the other forums better. Every time I posted something on Generations, everyone has the same crap over and over again. It seemed like a copypasta, but some of the words were different in each post. I didn't really want to quit, but then PC reset everyone's passwords. I tried to make another account, but it didn't work out so well. This made me think that InThe00s was better, and I barely went on Personality Cafe ever since.

But it's on the billboard hot 100 2007 chart. Just like how for example Uptown Funk came out in late 2014 but it is really a 2015 song. Or Happy came out late 2013 but it is really a 2014 song. It's more about when the song peaks on the charts and how long it stays on the charts.

I gather with family at the end of the year for the holidays and we play whatever's popular, so songs like Uptown Funk and Irreplaceable are what I personally associate with late 2014 and 2006 respectively. You're right though, the song was popular in 2007 as well.

Early mid 2006 was different from 2007.
There was no iPhone, shows like Malcolm in the Middle and That 70s Show were still on TV, Britney hadn't shaved her head yet, Avril Lavigne hadn't yet gone "poppy" (well, unless you count the song she did for the Eragon soundtrack), The CW was still The WB and UPN, Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh were still on Kids' WB, YouTube wasn't yet owned by Google, gaming was still mostly in the 6th generation with no sign of the PS3 or Wii, etc.
Late 2006 is when we saw the first signs of the late 00s cropping up.
Well I was talking about the music specifically.

My experiences as well; no one had an iPhone in 2007-08 school year.
The device to get that year was the 80GB iPod! I bought the 120GB iPod in 2008 but it was kind of pointless since I only ever used 3-4GB at a time. It took 4-6+ hours to convert videos from AVI to MP4 so it was cumbersome to watch videos on it >:(

Yeah, I remember owning a huge iPod in 9th grade, though I broke it quickly because it couldn't handle running the way Minis and Nanos could. In my 12th grade yearbook, there actually was a page featuring a iPhone, with apps representing the experience at my college prep, but I and a lot of other people still owned slider phones, even though my high school probably had a larger percentage of iPhone users at the time than most due to most students' parents being extremely wealthy.

Apple products used to be infamous for planned obsolescence. You have your iPod for 1 year and 1 month and then it went haywire! >:( ;D
I got a Motorola C139 in 2007 as a hand-me-down from my dad, and that was my cellphone throughout high school until I graduated.
