1. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (2003)

Just booted this baby up today! Came out late 2003 so the jury's still out on whether this counts as early 2000s. I love this game way more than Mario Kart Wii (and *gasp* Mario Kart 64) just because the battle mode was so much fun! I also loved the two-character with special items mechanic, a very new, interesting twist on a classic game.
2. Banjo Tooie (2000)

Death by nostalgia is a thing, and this game might be one of the leading causes! The multiplayer in this game is unforgettable. And the characters! Boooyyyy, the characters! It's 2015 and I still fall down my chair laughing at these guys. It remains one of my all time favourites along with its prequel.
Jingaling: Yo, wassup! I'm King Jingaling, king of all things Jinjo and ruler of this village.
Banjo: Your kingdom seems a bit empty.
Jingaling: My people were scared away by those witches and their giant machine. I kinda like it quiet, but I need to get them all back for the Kickball Tournament next week.
Kazooie: Doesn't seem that important to me.
Jingaling: But it is! There's a big kickball rivalry between the Jinjos and the moles, which means there could be trouble if we don't turn up!
Banjo: Oh dear...
Jingaling: Exactly! Anyway, here's an incentive for you to rescue my people... I believe you should go and see Master Jiggywiggy in his temple now.
Banjo: Jiggy who?
Jingaling: Jiggywiggy. He's the leader of a secret and ancient order dedicated to the mystical powers of the Crystal Jiggy.
Kazooie: Ancient order? Crystal Jiggy? You just made that up, didn't you?
Jingaling: No, honest, it's all true! He's very important to your adventure, as only the Crystal Jiggy can open the worlds that you must enter.
Banjo: Can you show us the way, King Dingaling?
Jingaling: It'll be my pleasure...

Double Dash get's a pass because it almost looks like an N64 game, even if it came out in late '03.

Spiderman
!!!
Oh man, this game was insanely popular in my neighbourhood :D I remember when I knocked at my friend's door to ask him to come out and play, but his mom told me that he went to my house! I come back and go to the basement to find his eyes glued to this game ;D The stealth and the beat 'em up action in this game are unforgettable.
I remember seeing commercials for those Tony Hawks games, and seeing Tony Hawks on TV 24/7, but I don't remember actually playing them unfortunately. :(

It was popular in mine, too. I think I was the oldest dude in the neighborhood who had the game as I just turned 18 when it came out. "Jordan, why are you playing kids games?" "Shut up, this games rad, check it out!" and my friend's soon ate their words as they got hooked on it like crack. ;D
Man, you'd love it! The soundtrack is the best. It's mostly Punk Rock, going to the 70's originals, then the early 80's Hardcore right up to the 90's and early 2000's Epi-Fat Skate and Pop Punk. Suicidal Tendencies, Bad Religion, Lagwagon, Dead Kennedys, The Vandals, The Offspring, Less Than Jake, you name it! I played those games for hours on end.

I wasn't really that much of a gamer back in the early-mid 2000s. But I do play retro games from the 90s to the mid 2000s on emulators.

In case you haven't figured it out. I liked games from 2000-03. So many different kinds of games. Also liked when FPSs and MOBAs weren't the only genre companies made (this is an exaggeration as I know there are tons of other games besides FPSs/MOBAs being made, but I do get annoy how at events like E3 half of the games announced are FPSs/MOBAs games).

Did anyone else think this game (along with other PS1 games) had a bit of a "dark" feel to it?
Not intentionally, but due to the PS1's limitations, it seemed to have a bit of an interesting, uncanny valley feel to it (characters make only one facial expression, dark colors and surroundings, low-poly models, dark voids and borders, etc.).
This was one of my favorite games back in the day, and it haunted me for years after I finished it.

I was actually just about to recommend this game to Baltimorean! I don't remember the game being "dark", other than the fact it takes place at night time. :o Most definitely not haunting lol. It's a game that's perfect for emulators: short and sweet! The platforming action is classic 5th gen and if you're fan of Toy Story you'll just love it all-around.
I played it on the N64 but I heard the PS1 version is better because it had the movie cutscenes, which the N64 version didn't.

That series was so much fun :D They actually had a fun single-player mode too. The recent Xbox 360 version is total ass in comparison.
This racing game and.....
Crash Nitro
Were the prime of my childhood being 8 to 10 years old playing these games on the XBOX and Gamecube all the time with my siblings, cousins and friends! Brings back golden memories! :D :D
I didn't get to play the Gamecube version (I didn't even know there was one!) but the PS1 was hours of pure fun. :D Kart racing games are almost as pure fun as it gets. (but Smash Bros. wins in the end!)
In case you haven't figured it out. I liked games from 2000-03. So many different kinds of games. Ugh same! After 2003 or thereabouts it was all GTA clones when you went to the video game store. It was starting to get stale fast, but there was still some diversity then. These days I stick to XBLA/PSN/WiiWare and 3DS games. Those games/systems still have lots of originality and creativity that we expected out of 5th gen/early 6th gen back in the day. It helps that the games are cheap!
I'm so glad you mentioned Sonic Adventure 2! I remember all the teenagers hating on it back in the day because it wasn't 2D (and had the cheesiest storyline of all video games forever LOL), but I loved that game to death. The level design in that game was genius; I still remember all the levels like the back of my hands. I also loved the treasure hunting. I still listen to the super-cheesy soundtrack to this day haha.
I remember when I bought my Gamecube. It was March break 2002, my brother bought Luigi's Mansion and Melee along with 4 controllers. The neighbourhood kids came rushing to my house (my house was already known for being the Super Smash Bros. house with the N64 version) and we played that game all night until 4AM! One of the best slumber party games of all time *_*
I've been playing this a lot recently

I need to play these Tony Hawks games! Everyone keeps talking about them. Too bad the rental store is out of business :\'( (I would play on emulators but I'm on Ubuntu and there aren't many, and I hate booting up the insufferably slow Windows side of my computer)
The last I recently played was True Crime Streets of LA. They do have that last days of the golden age of gaming to them.
That was the last GTA clone I enjoyed, and really only because I was 11 and erm... y'know, the birds and the bees... and this game delivered on that. After that I was done with them! The NY version was a disaster lol.

And yes, this game has heavy doses of nostalgia. :p

I'll tell you one thing though, the cgi cutscenes from a few PS1 games used to scare me as a kid. To this day IDK why I found some of these scenes scary (ok well maybe a little)

I wouldn't call it a GTA clone, man. It just took inspirations. I personally never got into the GTA series. What I really like about True Crime is how well it captured the atmosphere of 2003, the quirkiness and fun sound affects. Its a brilliant game.

Oh yeah, I definitely enjoyed it. Thinking about it, I only look badly at it retrospectively because a lot of the GTA clones that came out afterwards left a bad taste in my mouth about that whole period of gaming. I did actually have fun playing that game though. The soundtrack on the radio is very 2000s haha.
I don't see how it wasn't a GTA clone though. It's actually one of the most shameless GTA clones out there. Saints Row and Just Cause at least have some unique features that they're worth being their own series, but this True Crime series was almost a carbon copy. It had the crime elements, the running over people with your car elements, it had those stars in the corner that told you the army was about to go after one single man elements. :o
It's like one of the first series listed here lol http://gta.wikia.com/wiki/GTA_Clone

Hands down my favorite Crash game of all time :D
I was an N64 kid back in the day, and didn't get a PlayStation until '99, so Crash Warped was actually my first PS1 game. Brings back alot of great memories, like finding the hidden warp room, staying up past midnight trying to get the platinum relic at Toad Village, losing about 30 lives before finally getting beating Uka Uka. Good times, indeed. 8)
I'm so glad you mentioned Sonic Adventure 2! Sadly, I was one of those teenagers that bashed both Sonic Adventure games because they weren't in 2D like the Genesis games I'd grown up playing. It was only years later (and with the help of emulation :-X) that I finally realized how wrong I'd been.
Of course, I was also one of the idiots who thought that LoZ: Wind Waker wouldn't be any good because it was cel-shaded, and who ignored all the bad reviews that Devil May Cry 2 got because I thought there was just no way that it could possibly suck that bad, so you could certainly say that my batting average on game predictions in the early '00s was pretty lousy. ;D

Glad you finally saw the light ;D
I remember hating on Wind Waker art style as well, and I was only 10 years old... I wanted Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask with better graphics. I actually still don't like it to this day. I keep getting stuck on one of the islands lol. My introduction to the DMC series was DMC3, thank god I never had the misfortune of playing the seconds. I think I saw it on a 'biggest disappointments of 6th gen' list.
Speaking of Sonic, I fired up this goodie today.

I use to be such a gamer when I was in my teens and 20s( 90s and 2000s). But now a days I don't seem to have time for that anymore. I do play some video games usually when my sister visits me. We play Mario Kart, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Donkey Kong 1,2 and 3. It's usually fun when we get together and do some old school gaming, but only on special occasions for nostalgic reasons of course.

Aw man, right in the childhood! Anyway I owned the N64 version but I never felt it was all that dark. Though I remember being scared of the first boss, when I first played the game.

I once rented the PS1 version (before I bought the N64 version), and it did have cutscenes, but I think the music was slightly different.

There was this:

Jumping on that train was so badass, even though there were issues with the physics. Also landing on the other riders in a race and listening to the funny yells the rider lets out when he falls off a cliff.

This was my first PS2 Game! OMG The Nostalgia :D

I still occasionally play AoE2, and also Civ III on PC.

I wish they used the North American anniversary for a North American ad. I want to be reminded that it was 20 years ago when I saw the Dodrio in front of Ash's house crowing to wake him up, not 17.5 years ago ;D

It's kind of stupid that people outside of Japan would celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of Pokemon in Japan. No one outside of Japan even knew what Pokemon were until at least 1998. I may have given it a pass if it was meant to celebrate when Pokemon came into existence, but then they had the "Like no one ever was" sign on the was at 0:37. Why would they put the lyrics to the english dub theme of Pokemon, if that didn't even exist until 1998? Not to mention the fact that the anime didn't even exist in Japan until 1997. September 8, 2018 is a more noteworthy date, because that's the 20th anniversary of the worldwide release of the Pokemon anime. Now I say the anime release date, because the games had mixed release dates outside of Japan. For example North America got it on September 30, 1998, while Europe had to wait until 1999.

Exactly. Pokemon would have meant nothing in 1996, to those living outside of Japan. Why celebrate an anniversary of something that didn't even exist to us yet?

I picked up Devil May Cry collection for the Xbox 360 for $10. Pretty excited to replay through it! It has DMC2, which I never got to play, and have been warned about! ;D
