Subject: The 2005 Appreciation Thread
Written By: batfan2005 on 07/21/15 at 9:33 am
This is a thread for those who love and miss 2005, and think it was a lot better than 2006, and believe that is was the year that started the transition to the late 00's culture. 2005 seems to get picked on more than any other year on this forum. People talk about how 2005 is "old" and "outdated", and belongs with the early 00's and late 90's. The early part of the year might have been, when 50 Cent's "Candy Shop" was popular, but the fall of 2005 brought in some changes that we saw more of in 2006-2008. It was the beginning of the emo and scene culture, MySpace's popularity, YouTube, the next generation of gaming with the launch of the Xbox 360, and the debut of many new artists in the years to follow such as Chris Brown and Rihanna.
It was one of my favorite years of the decade. In the summer, I was going to the movies almost every week. There was a lot of good music that year too. As I mentioned earlier, it went from a hip-hop dominated Spring, to more dance pop and emo rock in the Fall, and my playlist reflects that. It was a happier and simpler time. It's hard to believe that it was 10 years ago.

2005 was my favorite year in the 2000s. Mostly because of how awesome Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Toon Disney and PBS Kids still aired their prime shows back in the day. It was also the year when the Chicago White Sox won the World Series for the first time in 88 years.

I can't really stand 2005. It's leagues above today, but I found it to be the worst year pop culture-wise, I find 2006-09 better.

I forgot to mention about the TV of 2005. Some of the shows I didn't watch until later on, like "How I Met Your Mother" and "The Boondocks". It is hard to believe those shows premiered back in 2005 (except for the fashion and flip phones that you see in Season 1 of HIMYM). My other favorite shows from that year are American Dad and The Office.

Oh yeah hands down, 2005. That year along with 2004 were my favorite years of the mid-2000's culture. Especially that relaxing summer. I watched Fantastic 4, Madagascar, and Shark Boy & Lava Girl in theaters during that summer. Still playing many of my favorite games on the Gamecube and XBOX with my friends like Mario Kart Double Dash, Grand Theft Auto III, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Star Fox Assault, Crash Wrath of Cortex, and much more. IMO, 2005 as a FULL year was the last time Cartoon Network, Kids WB, and Disney Channel were still really epic with great programming before each of those started jumping the shark the following year around 2006ish. JETIX was in full swing with Toon Disney and 2005 had my favorite Jetix lineup ever as long as it existed, with reruns of great Marvel cartoons along with some good Power Ranger shows. I didn't go on any vacations in Summer 2005, I just went to the YMCA to swim and went back home and did all of these activities. I also agree with the OP, the only great things about 2006 for me was getting a Nintendo DS with Mario Kart DS & New Super Mario Bros, getting Call of Duty 2, and best of all, going to Savannah, Georgia and Disney World throughout that Summer. My personal life made 2006 great for me. Pop culturally no where near as good as 2005.

Yeah, unfortunately, 2005 is probably my least favorite year of the 2000s, pop culture-wise. It was pretty much the year that everything that I loved about the early 2000s died out. Aside from the most recent installment of Dance Dance Revolution, there were pretty much no video games that interested me at the time, the current generation having peaked in 2001. I also stopped watching Cartoon Network at the beginning of the year, due to the sudden influx of lousy new shows like Atomic Betty and Camp Lazlo and disappearance of old classics like the Powerpuff Girls.
Even though YouTube launched that year, I hadn't a clue what it was yet until sometime in 2006. I think I first knew about Wikipedia in 2006, too. Other than that, the Internet wasn't terribly different in 2005 than it was in the late 90s.
Musically, 2005 was pretty subpar, especially during the latter half in particular. I actually sort of liked the crunk/snap sound when it first flourished in the mainstream in 2004, but it quickly devolved into something abominable the following year. D4L's Laffy Taffy and Pretty Ricky's Grind with Me are among the worst songs to ever hit pop radio, and songs like Stay Fly and I Think They Like Me weren't much better. Other genres weren't much better. Childish songs like My Humps, Hollaback Girl, Grillz, and Don't Cha were somehow dominating the pop airwaves, while the melodic, rhythmic types of songs that defined the early 2000s were harder to find. In terms of rock acts, Fall Out Boy and All-American Rejects weren't horrendous, but they were nowhere near as catchy as Blink-182, Good Charlotte, Bowling for Soup, Sum 41, etc. were in the early 2000s as far as the pop punk sound goes. Nickelback went from a decent, if generic post-grunge band in 2001-2003, to a boredom factory with that dreary single Photograph. System of a Down released the groundbreaking B.Y.O.B. that year, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to save a somewhat stale year for rock.
2005 was notable for its unusual amount of musical comebacks, whether it be anticipated follow-ups to popular early 2000s releases (Gorillaz's Demon Days, Kanye's Late Registration, Franz Ferdinand's You Could Have It So Much Better, Coldplay's X&Y, etc.), or the first notable album that an artist has come out with in ages (The Rolling Stones' A Bigger Bang, Garbage's Bleed Like Me, Bon Jovi's Have a Nice Day, and Kate Bush's Aerial, my favorite release of the year). The biggest example, however, was Mariah Carey, as it was the only year of the 2000s during which she was the most popular female r&b artist and not Beyoncé (whose solo material I find very overrated). That being said, The Emancipation of Mimi is actually a pretty overrated album, due to a handful of lousy club tracks interspersed with the good stuff like We Belong Together and Shake it Off; the diva's 90s and 2009-present stuff is stronger, imo.
Geopolitically, 2005 was defined by Hurricane Katrina. Not the best claim to fame, I must say.
As a whole, I actually remember 2005 not being such a bad a year for me personally, but that's because I had truly just begun to shift my focus towards more obscure types of communities and activities to isolate myself from the dominant popular culture of the time.

The early 2000's died for me around mid-late 2004. The Planet Hot Wheels website shutdown including its merchandise getting discontinued, which made me real upset at the time. Pokemon cards and many other card games were banned from my school. Wonderballs were discontinued. Classic Nicktoons & Cartoon Network shows like Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Powerpuff Girls, Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Rocket Power, etc. came to an end. Toonami was moved from the weekdays to Saturday nights. Many sitcoms that were still played a lot in the early 2000's on primetime TV were taken off the air.
As for Cartoon Network, well, you still had Ed, Edd n Eddy, Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Codename: KND, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Justice League Unlimited, Teen Titans, and Duck Dodgers. Those shows still being around kept me into the network. However, you're right, the others had left including LOONEY TUNES getting kicked off the network as well, which still cringes me to this day. The variety wasn't the same anymore and some mediocre shows started premiering that I had no interest in. Cartoon Network was definitely at its best before 2004 hit. I honestly think 2001, 2002, and 2003 were the absolute best years for the network in terms of full variety, diversity, and overall feel. While I think 2004 & 2005 Cartoon Network wasn't as good, certainly better than 2006/2007 up to now though.

Yeah, the end of 2004 was the beginning of the end, before they pretty much bottomed out at the end of the decade. I was a bit skeptical when they replaced the iconic Cartoon Cartoon Fridays segment with the corny, TRL-ish Fridays theme instead, but the shows themselves were still good during that time. Even though most of the classics were already running out of new episodes at that time, and I mostly watched Codename: Kids Next Door and Miguzi in 2003/2004, I still have lots of fond memories of the channel during that time. The channel basically jumped the shark, though, in late 2004, and it only went downhill from there, especially by 2008, when Billy & Mandy and Codename: Kids Next Door were over. I'm just so glad to have grown up with Cartoon Network during its early 2000s incarnation and not with shows like My Gym Partner's a Monkey, Chowder, and Juniper Lee.

2005 was a true transition year, as others have said youtube started. This year had more in common with the late 2000s than the early 00s period. Myspace was starting to hit its peak which would occur later on during 06.A very interesting year to look at because it, at least on the calendar was near the halfway point of the decade. Many pop culture artifacts we have now either started around 2005 or was coming into its element. ;D

July 21st 2005 - UK singer Long John Baldry died of a chest infection. He was one of the founding fathers of British Rock 'n' Roll in the 1960s performing with Blues Incorporated and Cyril Davies' R&B All Stars. He later fronted the Hoochie Coochie Men, with Rod Stewart and then Steam Packet with Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll. Also a member of Bluesology with Elton John. He also narrated on Winnie The Pooh recordings for Disney and was the voice for Robotnik on the Sonic The Hedgehog computer game.

Woah I completely forgot about these, especially Chronicoles of Narnia: Lion, Witch, & the Wardrobe, which was one of my favorite book series and movies of all time. Although late 2005 but still in the year though.

These 4 articles I found I want to show y'all two are pretty lengthy, but these are worth reading. It pretty much explains the history of Cartoon Network from 1992-2007 from its rise, golden age, silver age, to its decline and death. I'm aware that each of us three know which one was the best. It's all based off opinions and preferences though. Feel free to give your thoughts.

Wow. I'm surprised there was somebody that actually liked the Yes! era.

1992-1995: Classic era , old school looney tunes and hannah barbera cartoons
1995-2003: Golden Age, it's heyday with the launch of what-a-cartoon show ,cartoon cartoons etc...
2004-2007: Silver Age; still good with the city era went downhill with the yes era but overall a good era
2007-2012: Dark Age; complete GARBAGE(with the exception of gumball, regular show, adventure time)
2012-present: renaissance?? with the relaunch of toonami and shows like steven universe, gumball, regular show, adventure time etc.. being popular CN is WAAAAAY better now than it was in 2008 but has a long way to go if it wants to get back to golden age (or hell even silver age) status.
fixed

Yeah I loved 2005.
It was a great year for me, I was in 3rd/4th grade and I tend to get nostalgic of those two school years very fondly. Kindergarten-2nd grade was amazing as well and so was 5th grade, but 3rd/4th grade were freaking amazing for me. First off Spring 2005, I remember playing outside with the kids on my block after school everyday, riding my bicycle around the park, swinging on the swings and jungle gyms, going on school trips to the Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn, I remember my mom took me to the Liberty Science Center in Jersey, I would play my Gameboy Advance for hours on end.
Summer 2005 was amazing as well, going to the Boys & Girls Club, watching movies with the kids there, it was the last hurrah for Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, & Disney Channel before they started to go on a steep decline, infact the Cartoon Network Summer that year was pretty epic, watching Toonami on saturdays, playing Smash Bros. & Tekken at friends houses, going to Mexico (around when Hurricaine Katrina hit) going to a family reunion in Pennsylvania.
Fall of 2005 was epic as well, watching Nicktoons (at this point I gave up on Nick and just watched the classics), watching Toonami every saturday to catch episodes of One Piece, Zatch Bell, Naruto, Yu Yu Hakusho, seeing kids in my school riding Heelys, getting a Gamecube that christmas, going to Thanksgiving in Jersey that year, my mom getting engaged to my step father, etc.
This abundance of happiness carried over into 2006 another year I hold very dear to me

How long did Long John Baldry did the voice for Winnie the Pooh?

A fun year, personally, for me. Too bad I didn't enjoy it enough. :)

I enjoyed 2005 a lot. During Spring Break, I got to go to Legoland for my 11th birthday, and we also went to Cabo San Lucas for a few days.
I spent the summer with my dad, who was living in California at the time, mostly being lazy and playing Runescape, and we also went to Oregon and New Jersey to see family.
One of my all time favourite albums came out in October 2005, tATu's Lyudi Invalidy...

I took it for granted, that's all. I should clarify that I did enjoy it, I was just too ungrateful to admit it to myself, or anyone else. Bratty 16/17 I was. :)

I feel the same way as a teenager in the mid 2010s. But I feel like that this year is an improvement from the early 2010s.
