Yes I did. At home we had both a video and dvd player. Only when the vhs one broke down around 2006, we had to restrict ourselves to the dvd one. Tv was still bulky though.

Yes, they were still commonly used to watch VHS tapes then. Some people still have them, actually I think VHS might be making a bit of a revival because movies can be had for so cheaply on them and the quality really isn't that inferior to DVD.

The last time I watched/recorded a VHS was in 2005. We had gotten a VHS camcorder in 2002, people were still buying them back then. I still have various VHS movies recorded.

I still buy lots of old pre-2005 movies on VHS when picture quality isn't a huge concern. You can get them for like 88 cents at a Goodwill. Cheaper than DVD or Blu Ray and still a very viable method of watching older movies.

I have a combo VCR/DVD player, and I've had it since about 2006. I used the VCR to tape things off of TV up until 2008 when I moved and I could not figure out how to hook up the VCR part of the machine to the cable so that I could record things. I've only just recently started throwing away alot of VCR tapes that I recorded TV stuff of, because it's ridiculous to move boxes and boxes of videotapes whenever I move, and I don't ever watch them anyway.
I have a couple VCR tape sets that I'm reluctant to get rid of, such as St. Elsewhere and WKRP in Cincinnati. They might be worth something to someone, but hardly anybody uses the format anymore, so...
There is one movie that I don't think ever came out on DVD from the 80s that I loved. I really need to find a way to transfer it to DVD somehow. It is called "Sing" starring Jessica Steen.

Disks and DVDs are dying now too. I personally don't use them anymore and they're very unpopular and dying as online services like ITunes, Netflix are taking over. So it may not be a good idea to transfer them to disks. Transfer them to your hard drive instead and then put them in the cloud. The days of physical media are numbered.

If I looked hard enough or cared, I might be able to find a CD player in my old room, but what would be the point when I have newer technology which can run CD's?
I have combo players. We also have some old VCR's that still work.

Me, no. When I got my first apartment in 2001, I didn't bother buying a VHS player since I bought a DVD player. The only time I ever used VHS around that time was when a friend recorded some TV shows I didn't get to watch (and I didn't have TiVo or anything like that). I had to go to my ex-GF's house and watch it, lol.

Yes, we still were. In fact, I myself continued to use them until 2008, when the built-in VCR in my little TV stopped working.
I still have a collection of video tapes that I don't think I could ever part with; in fact, just a few weeks ago I watched one of my videos on the downstairs TV, on the VCR/DVD combo unit.

Since I've recently gotten into tape trading, I have to say in the past year that I've used a VHS more than I've ever since the late '90s since there is so much content that has never been released and is only available on that format, and now that there are VHS models that dub into DVDs and digital formats (yes, they still sell VHS machines today with DVD's), it is still relevant in terms of preserving old movies. I also purchased a Betamax recently since you're more likely to find older '80s/early '90s (and even late '70s) stuff from a mix of old tapes compared to VHS. In a recent lot of VHS tapes that were prerecorded, I even found a tape that was recorded just back in August 2013, which shows that there are still those who want to record and keep since with a DVR, the content eventually disappears after a few months and its much more difficult to record onto a DVD. But in the mid-2000s, I still occassionally recorded a show, but since I was focusing on getting through college, I tended to watch less at the time. Just be sure that the machine works and doesn't "eat" tapes. Despite claims about tapes degrading, I still find that most tapes with proper storage still work fine today, even at SLP/EP speed. I generally recorded The Price is Right for a couple years (sorry, I only have a few clips intermagled with other stuff), Pokemon during its first two seasons, Press Your Luck during its first several months on Game Show Network in 2001, and my brother recorded some Yu-Gi-Oh and Adult Swim around 2003 or so. I also find VHS as a great alternative to Netflix/Online rentals, DVDs, or Blu-Ray since they can be bought for low prices.

My friends and I watched "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (2000 Jim Carey version) on VHS at my friend's house a few weeks ago. It made me wonder when the last time I watched a VHS tape before that was.
I wonder if hipsters will eventually reclaim VHS like they did with vinyl records.

I don't think so. Vinyl records have a lot of advantages in comparison to cds, for example a warmer sound and a better sound quality (compared to mp3, if the record is in mint condition). That's not the case with DVD vs. VHS.

Why we still have a VCR at home! If you tape a show you can have it as long as you want, so why throw out a good thing? Plus there are tapes I'd still watch if the mood ever hit that I will not throw out for that reason. :D I have plenty of DVD's, but no Blu Ray player yet.

I was, but definitely not as much as I was using DVDs. The only time I used the family's VHS player was to watch old videos of programs I recorded, family home videos or movies that I didn't have in the DVD format. Last time I remember using VHS was the summer of 2010 when I decided to watch Toy Story out of pure nostalgia before the theatrical release of Toy Story 3.
