Subject: Do you think people's opinions of the 2000s are inaccurate?
Written By: Visor765 on 07/10/14 at 7:28 pm
I've read in ALOT of websites where people state "The 2000s were a bad version of the 80s." Do you think this is inaccurate? Because I honestly see way more 70s than I do see 80s. Especially in music. Disco and Funk really inspired Hip-Hop and R&B music. The 1970s were a very "Black" decade for pop culture: So much of it is inspired by African-American culture. Same with the 2000s, particularly the early and middle years, A.K.A. the REAL 2000s. There were SOME 1980s influences, such as in rock and electronic music. You had The Killers in alternative rock (See "Mr. Brightside" and "When You Were Young" for examples), and you had the pop-rock, pop-punk, and power-pop revival (most things from the early and mid 2000s). These were late 70s-mid 80s influences with power pop and new wave. I see ALOT of 70s in fashion too, but I will save that for another post.

The 80's were the 80's and the 2000's were the 2000's. They didn't have an 80's zeitgeist at all!

I know, but so many people think the 2000s copied 80s trends when in reality it was the 70s they were influenced by.

I've thought this for a while now.

Disco and Funk really inspired Hip-Hop and R&B music.
That's definitely true.

Music always evolves out of something though. It doesn't stop.

Even "80s inspired" songs have taken things that are actually from the 70s. Fountains of Wayne's 2003 song "Stacy's Mom" is inspired by The Car's "Just What I Needed", which people think it's "80s" although it came out in 1978 therefore making it a technical 70s song. The music video makes references to the early 80s movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". Madonna's 2005 song "Hung Up" samples Abba's disco song "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!", specifically the synthesizer hook. This Abba song came out in 1979. In the music video, Madonna wears the leotard, the leg warmers, typical " 80s" stuff, even though her song is inspired by a 70s tune. Her hairstyle is kinda late 70s/early 80s.

It's an ongoing process.

Music also tends to look back and revive past genres and make them new again to a younger generation. They revived disco and funk in the 90s (a trend which continued into the 2000s), they brought back bubblegum pop in the 90s (again, a trend which continued into the early 2000s), and they revived power pop, pop rock, new wave, and reggae in the early 2000s. The 2000s also continued the popularity of alternative rock which had started in the 1990s, evolving into a more pop punk feel, though. The electro-pop of the late 80s/early 90s was also revived in the late 2000s. Oh wait, don't forget post-grunge! Yeah, I see a mix of both 70s and 80s, as well as continuing several 1990s music trends...

I see very little '80s in the 2000s or 70s for that matter if we are simply talking about the music. Iraq can possibly be compared to Vietnam, but it was still very different being that Iraq was fought by a volunteer military vs. Vietnam being fought by drafted soldiers. The male hairstyles of the late 2000s hearken back to the late 60s-early 70s.

If you were a dude in the late 2000s, this is what your hair looked like.
Other than that, the '00s had their own identity, and weren't a "new" anything.

I never really said they were the new anything... I was just asking if they were more inspired by 70s than 80s...

Am I the only one who doesn't follow hairstyle "trends?" My hairstyle has been the same my entire life.

Really? Wow. You should change it, it's super fun to experiment with newer hairstyles! Granted, I'm not a really edgy person with hairdos (I DESPISE the undercut hairstyle that is so ubiquitous these days), but trying something different is fun and it can actually affect your personality.

Know what, now that I think about it that is a very popular hairstyle today among young men(and some women too).
If a had to picture the 2014 look it would be a guy with a undercut with a buttoned up collared shirt, glasses, tight pants and sockless, with a beard.

Funny thing is that I can't really find a celebrity in my head with the exact hairstyle...
