Subject: 2008 and 2009: '00s or '10s?

Written By: bchris02 on 05/22/14 at 4:01 pm

A lot of people say the '10s began in 2008.  While there are certain aspects of life in 2008 such as the economic crisis, Obama, the first hints of electropop, etc that were early foreshadows of '10s trends, I think 2008 and 2009 firmly belong in the '00s decade and have more in common with 2005 than with 2014.  Here are the things that come to mind about 2008 and 2009.  Feel free to add more.

-The iPad had not been invented yet
-Windows Vista was the dominant operating system on new PCs
-MySpace was still a thing
-People still went to Blockbuster
-iPhones were around but were slow and pretty much only owned by geeks; Android phones didn't exist
-Hip-hop and R&B was still the dominant genre in pop music
-Post-grunge was enjoying its last hurrah
-CDs were still a factor
-Emo and "scene" styles, though past peak, were still everywhere
-"Hipster" was not yet a part of everyday vocabulary
-Miley Cyrus was Hannah Montana
-Logo-branded T-shirts such as A&F, American Eagle, Aeropostale were still pretty popular
-It was still acceptable in mainstream circles to oppose same sex marriage
-The Office was at its peak of popularity
-The Iraq War was still ongoing; Osama bin Laden still at large

Once again, I believe 2008 and 2009 belong firmly in the '00s camp and were very different from today.  Thoughts?

Regular cellphones were still popular. I saw more flip and slide phones in both of these years than smartphones.
Digital cameras were still used
Ipods were still widely used for music
Facebook was not popular
PlayStation Move and Xbox Kinect did not exist
Tabs were not invented yet

The Zune was still around as well.  The iPhone was the only smartphone.
Twitter was around but many saw it as a crazy and useless idea, especially in 2008.  In 2010 most would change their minds
Smart TVs with built-in Neflix and hulu weren't prevalent yet
There's a good chance even in 2009 that you had at least some CRT monitors in your office
Youtube was ad-free
Rockband, Guitar Hero, and DDR were still popular

The more I think about it, the '10s are definitely much more distinct from the '00s than the '00s were from the '90s, especially by mid-decade.
