Would you say 2006 is the last classic year of the 2000s?

As in the last full year of the real 2000s? I'd say so. However, early 2007 is still much like 2006. Songs like Nickelback's "Rockstar" are very 2006ish with a hip hop vibe that was still prevalent in 2006. As a matter of fact, 2006 was the last year that Hip-Hop was the king of the industry and it was the last year that it was ubiquitous. 2007 was the year that hip-hop had to share the riches with a blazing new phenomenon - Electropop. For instance, compare Fergie's "Fergalicious" and Lloyd's "Get It Shawty" to Akon's "Smack That" and Timbaland's "The Way I Are"! They're so different. Those latter two songs eventually paved the way for what is popular right now, although the sound has evolved and genre is in decline, but it's still here. Musical trend's don't ever last this long!

This sums up everything. Awesome observation.

I agree with Visor765, 2006 was the last classic year because after that, everything changed. We had the horrible economic crash. The unemployment rate skyrocketed. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kesha and Justin Bieber all debuted into the music scene. Obama was elected as America's first black president. Autotune was widely used for many songs which ruined music. Electropop exploded significantly. Iphones and Androids were first being released to the public. Teens started wearing skinny jeans in school. Last, technology was escalating and it is still continuing today.

I'd rather forget 2006 personally, but I'd say mostly 2007 was still the old way. Some things might have begun to change, but it wasn't a sudden difference. I remember songs played on the radio by Kanye West and Fergie and they were a little different than the stuff I knew in high school, but not radically so. I think 2007 was a transition year, but still when the "old way" was in. 2008 technology started to evolve more rapidly into what we have today and more people started to have new things.

A decade is a duration of 10 years, therefore a two year difference will not suffice.

I was just starting high school in 2006. Those tall tees (or, as I pejoratively put it, nightgown tees) were pretty popular with young men. My junior high school actually amended their dress code to prohibit those shirts.

I think it was a few things, but mainly the recession. Your music point is something I hadn't thought of, though. Then again, different styles can live at the same time. Compare "Bad Day" to "Low."

To the smarty pants above me (Philip Eno and 80sfan I'm looking at you!) we are not talking about calendar years, we are talking about "eras", as in, what defines a certain decade, such as New Wave for the 80s, and Grunge for the 90s. We are talking about the 2000s, what people will see in the 2020s as "The 2000s".
2006 was an ordinary year, like 1996 was, however, you see, 2006 was the last of it's kind. It was the final year of the Hip-Hop domination era of the 2000s, as well as the last year that Post-Grunge was truly popular. Post-Grunge, which started in 1995, continued longer into the 2000s, so therefore, it is more of a 2000s thing. Hip-Hop is similar. 2000s style Hip-Hop had started coming around as early as 1997. Mariah Carey's "Honey" is a huge example of this. Calendar-wise it's 90s, but it's style is very 2000s. More 90s style Hip-Hop was still around at this time, which generally had a New Jack Swing and 2Pac feel to it, as well as outdated synthesizers. Foxy Brown's "I'll Be" is an example of more 90s style Hip-Hop, and Destiny's Child's No, No, No Part 2 (very New Jack Swing). Obviously, the 90s style Hip-Hop was overthrown by the 2000s style Hip-Hop, as the 90s style became outdated.
For example listen to Mariah Carey's "Honey" (1997), DMX's "Party Up" (2000), Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me" (2000, not hip-hop, but it very hip-hop influenced), Mary J. Blige's "Family Affair" (2001), Eve's "Gangsta Lovin'" (2002), Ciara's "Goodies" (2004), and Cassie's "Me & U" (2006). They have the same groove, but different tempo's. I could name more, but I think you get the point. You can do the same dance moves to them. Different speed and pace, but the same. The concept of what was "cool" in Hip-Hop music was the same from 1997-2006. It was one era, and that was the 2000s era of Hip-Hop. Every genre has their "eras", but Hip-Hop was undoubtedly the most dominant in the 2000s. Compare 2006 to 2007 in music and 2007 is the prelude to the 2010s, whereas 2006 was not. It was completely, utterly 2000s.
Therefore, 2006 was a regular year, however it's style and zeitgeist was the last of it's kind. Hip-Hop was in, it was still cool to dress like a gangster, it was still cool to speak ghetto, white people wearing du-rags and bling bling, it was still the ways of the old. 2007 offered both the ways of the old and the new. That's what makes 2006 so memorable. 1997-2006 was the 2000s in the Hip-Hop community. When you count everything else, and not just Hip-Hop, I think 2002-2006 will be seen as "The 2000s" to future generations. Just a five year period, but a very robust one.

I agree 02-06 were basically the core 00s.
I wouldn't exactly group 2007 with today though.
07 was like 06 with more dance influence.

For me, 2006 was a year that started off great, but ended badly. At the beginning, I was in Grade 6 and had two really good friends. At the time I was living in Texas, and during the summer of that year, I moved to California. At first I was excited to move here, as most people can only dream of living in California. But the closer I got to moving, the more I wanted to stay in Texas, simply because of the life I had established there. I had these same feelings when I left Oregon three years earlier, but mostly got over them once I found new friends and a new life in Texas. I hoped California would bring the same, but it was not. The autumn of 2006 began a period in my life that was basically hell on earth, which would last up until 2010.
2004 and 2005 were much better years for me personally.

I was in college and had the roommate from hell at the beginning of the year. My two best friends became people I no longer knew. I turned 21 over the summer. Had a summer job that was physically painful, don't miss it. Had my first drink at a night club with a bunch of classmates. Got a job that winter at a different place and made a couple new friends. It had it's ups and downs, but I just remember it in a more negative light. 2004 was also and up and down. High school bullshizzle, graduating, first job ever, hanging out with friends and having a ball doing...nothing. Home drama. Looking for jobs that didn't pan out. Starting college, making new friends. 2005 was mostly a good year, but ended on a sour note.

Would you say 2006 is the last classic year of the 2000s?

I can still remember 2006 like it was yesterday.
It doesn't feel quite like yesterday, but I definitely do not have any feelings of nostalgia for 2006 yet either.
I was a junior in high school in 2006. It was a fun year, but it does not seem special enough to me to warrant all these threads about it.

My dog took a whiz in 2006 after reading a decadeology post. A little kid called the puddle a "decazeitgeistology" pool
that was the zeitgeist of the 2000s, which felt like a zeitgeist from 1996 when my cat barfed on the wall, which was made in 1972 but looked like 1982 coz 1963 is like 1995 in 1740 BC.

That's because they are based in the US and Canada, according to the Wikpedia page on Panera Bread. The article also states that the franchise is also associated with Au Bon Pain; something I did not know until just now.

I'd say 2008 was a transition year. First half of 2008 sounded radically different from the second half. In 2008 everything changed.

Who would you see if you could?
Oh there's quite an extensive list of bands that I would go and see.
Platinum Blonde
Tears For Fears
Duran Duran
Depeche Mode
Among others.
In fact Platinum Blonde is going to be at the CNE Band Shell Park in Toronto on August 22. I want to be a VIP there. :)

I hope you can go to see Platinum Blonde on that day. Admission is free with CNE ticket.

2006 was an important year for me, since I graduated from high school and began at the university that year. It seems to me that some late 2000's/2010's trends began early in Seattle, where I was living, since skinny jeans for men and general hipsterish fashions that still have currency today were already visible that year.

I saw them..31 or 32 years ago. Good concert. I was at the front so I even made eye contact with one of them at the end on the concert and said "great concert" and he looked back at me and said thanks and did a thumbs up. Must have been Mark Holmes coz he was the lead singer

Mark still is the lead singer. :) I would just be happy to make eye contact with Sergio Galli the guitar player. I am just completely crushing on him.

The film was about a guy who did bad things and he thought by using a remote control to rewind the bad things he had done and redo the past events from his life.

I started the 5th grade in 2006. I thought I was one of the big kids! 8) And I remember discovering YouTube (or was that 2005?). When I discovered it, it was a very obscure website, a haven for anime fans, otakus, video game lovers, and meme creators! Then 2007 happened, and that was the year that YouTube exploded into popularity. I feel so proud to have been with YouTube from the very beginning when it was a baby.

I definitely saw Click in 2006, and it can feel depressing to watch today with regards to how it travels into the future with regards to some changes. At least Bed, Bath & Beyond is stil around.
But for me 2006 will best be known for my family vacation to Canada where we saw Niagara Falls, drove past Tornto and could see the city, spent a few days in Montreal, and finally check out Quebec City. I also gambled in a casino for the first time at the Fallsview in Niagara Falls. Unlike some future visits, I came out decently there and at Montreal's. I also made the Dean's List for the Spring semester in college.
I also recall the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray format well and had a seasonal job at Macy's.
