Subject: What memories do you have of the year 2000?
Written By: mxcrashxm on 01/23/14 at 11:29 am
I was playing the N64, Super Nintendo, Sega Dreamcast, Gameboy Color, and Sega Gamegear. I was going to the park everyday. I was going to the beach with my family every other day. I went to see rugrats in Paris. I was in a reading program which I didn't like at first, but it turned out to be great. I was watching cartoon network, kids wb, nickelodeon etc., I was hearing songs like who let the dogs out, say my name, shake it fast, etc.
So what was your memories?

I was 15. Even though I have always been more of a rock music fan I was really into boy and girl bands. :D Also, I was obsessed with N64.

The most notable memory, for me, was putting our mobile home of 20+ years up for sale, selling it, and buying a brand new house close to the ocean.

I was working at a bank, wife was working in a University. We took a trip to Oregon in May. In my spare time I took a course on how to counsel others, I played lots of Tennis, started writing a book which I completed years ago, and I took part in a play ...similar to the Japanese film "Shall we dance"

I was in high school and that summer (it was a cloudy, rainy one) took a trip to Massachusetts, enjoying the historic sights of Cape Cod, Plymouth, Salem, Gloucester, and Boston and even attending a game at Fenway Park (Red Sox lost). I remember playing a little bit with the Sega Dreamcast, especially Sonic Adventure that came with the system, and hoped that Sega would once again compete with Nintendo and Sony, not knowing at the time that by 2002 Sega would stop selling hardware. I felt awed by the "Playstation 9" reference upon the release of Playstation 2. I felt that the sky was limit and didn't worry at the time at all that I would be growing old like I am today. 2000 felt like a sequel to 1999 with Pokemon still popular, Boy Bands/Britney/Christina Aguilera/Latino Pop, and it was the last year in which I never used a DVD player, even though like 1999 many TV commercials at the time said "On home video and DVD". But I was pretty sedate in terms of music culture, not going beyond the mainstream and I still liked more current music then as opposed to since 2003 or so when it started to sound like noise to me. However, I could tell some change, such as Nickelodeon which was going downhill at the time with some of its classic shows declining in quality (Rugrats/All That), Spongebob not appealing me, and newer shows that just didn't move me, though part of that could have been the result of "I'm no longer a kid." But it was the first year in which I spent a significant amount of time on the Internet using Netzero back when it was free, on Windows 98 until we get Windows 2000 later that year. Globalization seemed to be the buzzword of the time with the communications revolution led by the Internet and cellphone growth giving that "world getting smaller", and of course don't forget the Syndney Olympic Games which were just like any other.

I was in third grade for the first part and fourth grade for the last part.
I remember Pokemon was really popular through that summer, but when I started 4th grade no one seemed to care about it anymore (myself included).
We went to Disney World that summer and Epcot had "2000" on the big silver ball thing.
I was on an indoor soccer team that year (lasted into '01 as well)
I played with Legos a lot. I got a big Lego castle for my 10th birthday that year.
I got a game called Snowboard Kids 2 for Christmas '99 that I must have played throughout 2000...I still play it from time to time along with Mario Kart 64 :) Mario Party 2 also came out in 2000.

In late 2000 I got Windows ME as an update version for Christmas. This one was hell and the memory always went full after using windows for a few hours. I don't know how often I had to restart my computer using this operating system. In 2001 I finally got Windows 2000 and later this year also the first version of XP.

It was the year I was still in 8th grade and in the fall I started high school. I was into wrestling at the time (soap opera for teenage boys) and I remember all the drama over the summer with a girl I never should have made "friends" with in the first place.

The best thing is to always have positive friends. Negative vibes kill everything. As for wrestling, did you have fun and win any medals?

I agree the whole, "I'm a teen and not a little kid" feeling hit me really hard that year. I was in 9th/10th grade for 2000. I had basically said goodbye to Nickelodeon a couple of years before. Like any teenage boy my mind was filled with girls, driving and, when I felt like it, school :D Musically, I slowly transitioned from listening to top 40 pop and more towards my local classic rock and oldies stations. That Summer I visited Milwaukee and went to a summer fest fair in Wisconsin. There are only two movies I recall seeing in the theater that year and they were 13 Days ( Bruce Greenwood made a fantastic JFK) and The Pledge as I was becoming a huge Jack Nicholson fan. As for the Olympics in Australia that year it was weird to see the "summer" games on TV in the fall.
When it came to the 2000 election I had no respect for either Bush Jr, or Gore. This was the last election that I would be too young to vote in and even if I was I would not have done so. At one point I could no longer contain my rage and I told my 10th grade civics teacher that we should dump them both in the Potomac River and be done with it.

It was the last year before puberty set in for me. It was the last of my 'childhood' years. Because by 2001 I was a cranky and stubborn adolescent.
I remember album sales being HUGE that year. This was the last year albums sold big, by 2001 CD sales started to slide. Eminem, Nsync, and Britney Spears had albums that debuted first week with at least 1 million copies or more in 2000. Teen pop was huge this year, but I was starting to grow tired of teen pop and the music that was being played on the radio.
It snowed ALOT in November and December of that year. We got almost 40 inches of snow, that's a lot for where I come from.
Besides music I absolutely became obsessed with Harry Potter that year and read all of the first four books by December. I also loved the Grinch movie with Jim Carrey.
I think DVD's were becoming wildly popular this year, but VHS was still 'hot'.

That year my father bought our first computer. It came with 1 year free internet, windows 98, word 2000, cd burner and a webcam. I remember thinking that the modem noise was very modern lol. Before 2000 I used to buy albums but Napster became very popular that year and I started downloading music via internet (it took almost half an hour to download one song). Then I used to burn the songs and play the cd with the cd player I bought that year. That made me very happy because I could have madonna's "music" and britney spears' songs in the same cd.
In 2000 (and 1999) teen pop was very important to me (I was 11-12) and britney spears and christina aguilera were my idols. Sadly, the feeling of being in the 90's was gone too, because I started spending several hours at the computer and the internet culture absorbed me more than anything else. That's one of the reasons I miss the 90's, life wasn't so technology orientated.

These are not in chronological order, but these are some memories I have of 2000:
I landscaped outside of the school and met my eventual best friend.
I broke the radius and ulna bones in my right arm playing a ridiculous Pokemon themed tag game on the playground. It sucked.
I sung the Britney Spears song "Crazy" in a talent show with my friend, Ashley.
I learned I needed glasses.
I spent a lot of time on the computer and playing video games.
I joined Neopets around this time.
I loved anime and began attempting to learn to draw in the style.
We held some stupid Christmas play and the teacher made me the "head elf." I was somewhat miffed because I wasn't given the role of the cat.
We had D.A.R.E seminars.
They made us get tetanus shots; I kicked the nurse.

Some of the games I had in 2000 included: Populous: The Beginning, Catz 4, and Roller Coaster Tycoon. I might have also had The Sims this year. It's possible that was a bit later though too.
