Subject: Does Mean Girls look or feel dated to you?

Believe it or not, but it's a 9 year old movie. (And if you count when it was shot, 10 year old). But for some reason, it just doesn't feel that old.

Tina Fey, and her style of comedy, might have a part in making Mean Girls seem more recent. But mostly its because movies haven't really changed in the last decade.

Haven't watched Mean Girls in a long time, but the other 2004 comedies like Eurotrip and Anchorman don't feel dated at all. The only thing dated about Mean Girls was that Lindsay Lohan was a hot redhead.

Yes it feels 9 years old to me and pretty dated and 00'sy. That's not that long ago to have a retro look but the movie definitely looks and feels it's age to me.

Kind of a weird question. I mean, is there really any doubt that something from 9 years ago is going to look dated? Of course it will. It's inevitable.

It looks pretty dated, you can tell she was still getting out of her Disney phase even then.

Lindsay went insane after Mean Girls. Starting in 2004 she started losing a lot of weight. I love pre-2004 Lindsay though. Actually for the first half of '04, she was still sane, then it was all down hill.

Mean Girls may be a little dated, but it could still be more dated. I mean, look at its rough draft. It's even more dated than the final product. It had a lot of references to things that were really popular in 2003 and 90s stuff that was only mildly dated in 2003:

As a high school graduate of 2008, and 2004 being my last year of middle school, Mean Girls looks pretty dated for a few reasons.
1. It was filmed in 2003, which was a decade ago, before a lot of modern stuff was popular. No kids walking around with iPods, smartphones, skinny jeans. Before emo was really popular, which is already phased out.
2. Songs like Milkshake makes it feel dated. That song came out when I was in middle school.
3. Back when Lindsey was still hot.
4. Just the overal style of the kids clothes, and how they acted is pretty different from high school kids today born in the mid/late 90s

And also, the original had a subplot about a drug-addicted raver named Barry who wore half-shirts and sucked on a pacifier. Sounds pretty dated even for 2003, right?

Really the only thing dated about Mean Girls culturally, at the moment, is the use of flip phones. That's of course, focusing on the movie itself and not the actors in it. :D

Not at all, can't believe it came out in 2004(early 2004 so more like 2003), actually Transformers from 2007 feels a little outdated and this is crazy seeing as I was 13 when it came out.

Not really. If anything Mean Girls pioneered teen films as in if you we're compare Mean Girls to other teen films of the time you'd notice how serious and even accurate the depiction is of high school life (while still being fun of course). Many teen films of the 90s tended to be more ditzy as well as glamourising of teen life.
Mean Girls is almost like the Clueless for the 2000s in the way that it defined the teen films of that particular decade.

The rough draft is typical Y2K era comedy, but the finished result that we know is quite core '00s.

From a 2015 perspective, yes it does. Here's a few things I noticed especially after watching it recently
-The clothes were much more colorful. A lot of hot pink and neon colors
-The fashion all in all was very 00's. From the flared jeans, to the jean skirts, from the floral skirts to the various big name brands, etc.
-The pop cultural references, a lot of them were from the early 00's while some were even from the 90's
-The technology, flip phones, discmans, the White CRT computers, heck I even spotted a PS2 & N64, that stuff is definitely outdated
Those are just a few examples I could think of, but yeah as of now it seems pretty dated to me, however I would give it another 5-10 years until it starts become extremely dated or retro

It might not be quite as noticeable when it comes to music or fashion, but 2004 is very outdated when it comes to technology. So much so that I've actually begun to notice a spate of commercials recently making fun of flip-phones in comparison to smartphones. I think we can say that a time period is officially outdated once people start mocking it in commercials.

Of course 2004 is dated. Why is this even a question? If 2007 is dated then of course 2004 would be too. Even 2010 is slightly dated compared to today.

Mean Girls came out when I was a senior in high school and it really looked like people I knew. I mean I even had the husky gay friend--although he was Black. I wore clothes like the people there. Particularly the outfit Regina George wore when the bus hit her--black top, jeans, white belt and sneakers. Everyone I knew wore that. LOL.
It's been 11 years, of course its outdated. That was a different decade. :) But the "Boo You Whore" line is one I STILL use to this day. LOL

^^^^ a lot of those cheap (failed) sequels of franchises aren't really considered as an important cultural icon unless it's a REALLY BIG popular franchise like Toy Story 2 & 3, or Jurassic Park 3 and Jurassic World. Otherwise, a lot of those sequels would end up being TV movies or direct to DVD releases.

I still consider 2004 a bit outdated but it's a whole lot less outdated than 2002 especially considering they're only 2 years apart. I was looking through some of my stuff today like old CD's, cassettes, pictures, movies and all the stuff from 2002 is definitely outdated in a very late-20th century way. 2003 is 50/50. 2004 feels more like "early 21st century" dated.

Anything before 2011 is dated to some extent in my eyes. The 90s are retro. 2002 and before is very dated and old. 2007 and before is dated. Late 00's are dated but not as much as previous years of course. 2010 is mildly dated. That's just the way I see it I guess I'm pretty young haha. :P

Like I said, anything between the start of 2004 and mid 2008 is dated, nothing else added to it. Anything from late 2008-present is still modern or recent to me until there's a major cultural shift that happens. 2003 is kind of in between old and dated. Everything from 2002 and earlier is considered as old to me!

Yeah, 2002 is very dated and old. It's the last year that still had a bit of a late-20th century feel to it. I found some old CD's that I bought at these band's shows and looked up their music videos and it's like a totally different world. The spiky hair, baggy pants and bright colors! Too much 2002 nostalgia!

Same here! I have many fun memories from 2002. It's the first full year my childhood really peaked in all aspects! I remember going on many vacations, lots of family events, watching a lot of movies, experiencing tons of kid pop culture and stuff, etc. 2001 was when my core childhood started but I remember not much going on in my family during the year, but at the same time, it was a transition year for my town and my family. A bunch of new stores and roads got built, including lots of people in my family getting new houses or changing/moving around furniture.

Me, too! I remember going to a lot of good shows in 2002. That year was the last year to completely have that pure good ol' Y2K vibe. I just can't describe it because there's so much too say but it was such a good year. I remember eating a lot of Pizza Hut and Taco Bell during this time while listening to some of my favorite CD's. Everytime there was a current band coming to my town or a new release coming out I'd always be out seeing them or buying the albums and I was usually happy with what I bought. My friends and I drove up from Norcal to Socal and back to Norcal to see Green Day, Jimmy Eat World and blink-182 (who were all still at their best in 2002) on the Pop Disaster Tour. The four of us had this "fund" and blew it all to see them on every California date. I remember seeing a lot of movies this year. I went with some family to see Scooby Doo and laughed out loud and embarrassed myself in the theater when I saw Matthew Lillard as Shaggy. I looked down and saw some girls around my age in the front row giving me funny looks and I though "Ahhh sh*t!" Him and Sarah Michelle Gellar make that movie 20x more dated and it would of already been pretty god damn dated without 'em! I couldn't sit still through the Lord of The Rings because it was too long; I must of taken 30 bathroom breaks. If there is one movie that totally kicks ass and symbolizes 2000-2002 (or even just the 1998-2002 Y2K era as a whole) for me it's Spider-Man! That movie f*ckin' rules! I loved hearing Sum 41 (who I also saw live in 2001 and 2002) on the soundtrack with their Rap song. Star Wars Episode II was also a pretty funny movie. I actually fell asleep when I saw Phantom Menace so I didn't have the highest expectations but I found it an excellent comedy film with very good humor. George Lucas really outdid himself with that line about sand.
