Youtube and Social networking are more things of the second half and didn't define the whole decade.

There was social networking in the earlier part of the decade. Before MySpace there was Friendster. Even Yahoo and AOL chat rooms can be considered social networking. Before YouTube, I remember watching music videos in Yahoo Music, and funny cartoon clips and videos on Ebaumsworld.

I agree, the internet was a big part of the 00's.

Even Yahoo and AOL chat rooms can be considered social networking.

I tried chatrooms at first but I find messageboards quite fun now.

There is a difference if things only exist or if things are as good as a necessity and part of daily life.

Today (or in the late 00s), you find nearly anybody somewhere on the net - especially on facebook. That was not the case in the first half of the 00s when lots of small social networking 'prototypes' existed.

From what I remember, in the early 00s you were more chatting with unknown people. Today, you meet your real friends from school etc. online.

First and foremost, reality show competitions.

Reality show competitions were to the 2000s was grunge was to the 1990s.

In about 2008, we entered the equivalent to the post-grunge era, where the shows in general became fake and scripted.

I don't really know if you can say the 2000s were about the Internet. Unless you think it's just a fad that will die down eventually. ::) I'm thinking that future generations of history students will generally be told the decade was dominated by 9/11 and the war on terror, before the economic crisis at the end. Besides, in the long run, we tend to remember decades in terms of culture and politics rather than technology.

It seems as if the 00's are the first decade in a long time that don't have a significant defined culture. (For most people anyway, apart from this forum) That is unless more 2000's kids come to their senses and that they are 00's kids and not 90's kids and actually reminisce on their childhoods.  ;D

I guess you weren't culturally aware in the decade. There was The Biggest Loser, The Apprentice, The Amazing Race, Fear Factor, Survivor and many other reality show competitions. Sure, you might say there were also reality show competitions before the year 2000 hit, but like grunge in the '90s it was the '00s when it was ubiquitous (the shows are still around in the '10s but they have lost their novelty). As for children's culture, there would be the Pixar Renaissance like the Disney Renaissance of the '90s. Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, Wall-E and Up are all from the '00s.

This thread is beginning to veer toward decadeology with its comparisons between the 1990's and 2000's so I have decided to lock it.
