Subject: YEAR 2000! A teenaged year at last!
Written By: Lemonmelon on 12/31/12 at 6:23 pm
The year 2000 was one of the greatest years of pop culture history and the contribution it made to the world was impressive. It is now a great honor to declare that the year 2000 is finally a teenager.

Eh, I thought 2000 was kind of a bland pop culture year personally. Not bad, but not much of high impact and it felt like a comedown after the end of the 20th century madness of the late 90s.

I love the film with Jim Carrey, The Grinch. Actually I think it was the number one film in the US for 2000.

2000 was a pretty awesome year to be a teenager in my opinion. The euphoria of Y2K, the dying days of the tech bubble, the launch of the PlayStation 2, the end of the Clinton era, the most chaotic Presidential election in American history, and the absolute peaks of Toonami, WWF Attitude, TRL, Web 1.0, teen pop, Nu Metal and Pokemon.
Now, I'm not necessarily saying that all of that stuff is awesome in hindsight, just that 13-year-old me damn sure thought it was back then.

Yup there are now teenagers who weren't even alive in the 90s! Unless you count being in their mother's womb, which I kind of do, but still. It's weird there are teenagers with a Noughties birthdate. :o

Yeah, it's pretty freaky now that I think about it. Kids born in 2000 will start high school next year, and in 2015, people born in my freshman year of 2001 will be starting high school themselves.

Do you mean next school year or next calendar year? Kids born in early-mid 2000 won't enter high school until the Fall of 2014 along with late 1999-borns. But maybe the cut off date is different in your area.

Another weird thing to think about is that the people who are seniors in high school right now started kindergarten in the '00-'01 school year. So there is nobody left in high schools who started their education in the '90s (or 1900s at all).

At least 13 year olds are young teenagers and generally speaking seem more like children than they do like older teens. But yeah it's still so weird.
In 5 years, nobody under 20 years old will even remember a smidget of the 90s.

Yeah, I meant "next year" as in the 2014-15 school year.

Wow, I honestly hadn't thought of that. I guess the next big "transitional" point will be in 2018, by which point every student in school (save for those held back a year) will have been born in the 21st Century.

Not to mention the fact that, right now, in order to be able to remember every year of the 90's (including 1990) in vivid detail you really have to be at least 30. To be able to remember at least some detail from every year of the 90's, you need to be at least 25.
I guess that all means the 90's are getting old.

Yeah, the middle of the 90s is 18 years ago so referring to the whole 90s as 'about 20 years ago' is pretty justifiable now!

We all have to realize that we are 13 years into the '2000s' (I don't mean the decade) and that some of us already lived longer in the 2000s and 2010s than we have lived in the 80s and/or 90s.
For that reason, I don't think it's that weird anymore that there are teenagers around who can't remember the 90s - which is finally a decade pretty long ago and a decade when I was only a child.
More weird would be today that the teenagers from 2000 aren't able to really remember the first half of the 2000s and probably even 2006 and 07 in detail.

I lived for 9 years, 2 months, and 4 days in the '90s. Then 9 years, 2 months, and 4 days into the '00s would have been about March 4, 2009. Of course, the earlier you were born in the 1900s, the longer it will take to catch up to that same amount of time in the 2000s. Someone born in 1986 will reach that mark sometime this year, I think. (This is very complicated to think about for some reason ;D)

Yes, I will. In late July to be exact.
The year and month can be found very easily: you just have to take your age on 12/31/1999 = 13 and add the months that have been passed since your birthday = 6 + ca. 4 weeks = 2013 and 6 months and 28 days :)

I have also realized that people born before 1960 will have to get quite old to get into this position - and people born before 1950 (yeah, even 1955) will hardly make it...

Yeah um, anyone born in January 1987 or later has spent more time post-2000 than pre-2000. Actually it's kind of weird that say, a 29 year old still has spent more time in the 80s or 90s though if you're counting what they actually remember it's about half and half.

Yeah, it's even still kind of weird to me, since I have definetly done more since 2000 than in the years before. On the other hand, the childhood period feels longer for most kids than it actually is. For instance, my memorable time from 1989-99 definetly felt longer than the period between 2000-13.

Interesting. I was alive for 4,555 days in the 20th Century (from 7/12/87-12/31/99), and for 4,750 days so far in the 21st Century (obviously from 1/1/00 through today).
If my math is right (and considering how atrocious I am at math it very well may not be), that means I crossed the "more time spent in the 21st than 20th Century" mark around June 22, 2012.

Well if we wanted to get technical, you haven't crossed that mark yet since the line between the 20th and 21st centuries is between 2000 and 2001. But if we're talking about the nineteen hundreds vs the two thousands/twenty hundreds, indeed you have!

10/28/90 - 12/31/99 = 3352 days
01/01/00 - 01/03/13 = 4752 days
I crossed the "2000s>1900s" line on March 7, 2009
10/28/90 - 12/31/00 = 3718 days
01/01/01 - 01/03/13 = 4386 days
I crossed the "21st>20th" line on March 8, 2011
(I guess the transfer of the leap day in 2000 accounts for the one day discrepancy between the two events)

Even though, 2000 was still part of the 20th century, I value the 1900s vs. 2000s 'thing' higher. It's the 19** which really counts IMO... and the change from 19** to 20** was the actual big deal in the millennial era.

I can understand that. That is how it works for many people (though clearly not always the case). There will be a year or maybe two that is fuzzy but you hold a few selective memories, followed by a year that you remember pretty well but perhaps with significant gaps and then from then on your memory is crystal clear. Of course, you could also say that you don't remember January 7th, 2010 any better than January 7th, 2000. But in general, most of the pop culture things I would remember naturally would be from about ages 5-16. I can expect it to be different for others here though.

I miss 2000. Was 14 in that incredible year. 2000 and 2003 were two of the best years of my life and I don't think anything can or ever will match them. Music was just so good and exciting back then. Sometimes I wonder what happened, am I just getting old?
2011 was probably the last year pop culture was completely relevant to me. I seem to be getting more and more distant from it. I like today's rock, but am not big on the direction electropop has gone.

I don't question personal memories at all. I only doubt that people might know the 90s if they only remember the early 2000s. And that's what you were saying ;)
Plus: Even those who only remember 1999 or 1998 don't know the 90s IMO ;)
It's even challanging for me to seriously talk about the very early 90s and pop culture.

but they do remember some pop culture of the late 90s xD yeah 90s was split into 3 basically for me... the first third was the 80s leftover... mid 90s was the grunge era and late 90s was the teen pop bubbly culture era ;) we may only remember the late 90s but we remember parts of it at least ;) we would be a living history who actually remembers the 90s in 2080s onwards :p

If there are some poeple in the 2080s who care about some toddler memories from 80-90 years ago... maybe ;D

I won't worry about that for another 67 more years.

There are a handful of people still alive who were born in the late 1890s. That could be me in the early 2100s!

If you lived for example to 113, your lifespan would be 1990-2103. Better yet, if technology makes it possible to live to say 130, you are 1990-2120.

Yep! Although I'm not convinced human longevity is going to be expanded drastically where people will live into their 130s-150s. People have lived past the age of 100 throughout history, it's just become more common in the 20th and 21st centuries. The human body supposedly has a ~120 year cap on it (an age which only one person in history has been verified to reach.)
And if technology does make it possible, there would be repercussions. People would die at a MUCH slower rate...the world would get overcrowded and too many people would be competing for resources.
I'll certainly settle for 111 though (1990-2101) so I'll have officially lived in the 20th, 21st, and 22nd centuries 8)

How is that possible? ???

But going back to this, the oldest woman in the world, born in 1896, died last month and I was thinking she was probably the last living person who would possibly have memories that took place in 1899. Even if they were split-second toddler memories.

For now I'm just hoping to get to 80 ;D though it would be awesome to have a look at the 22nd centuary! :D

Yeah, that's true. On the one hand it sounds interesting that somebody still has got memories from before 1900, but on the other hand... what is so special about the actual memories that might be from the very end of the 19th century?. I see the 1890s and 1900s as one era since it is so long ago now... so who would understand significant differences between 1998 and 2008 in like 2102?

A 25 year old in 2102 probably won't understand any differences, but anyone born in our time who might happen to still be living then would be able to talk about the changes that took place between those years (Web 2.0, post-9/11, etc.)

Actually if menopause was delayed as well, women could wait longer to have children and thus the population would only increase very slowly. Slowly enough that we could brainstorm ways for the new people to live, such as colonizing space, etc.

The idea seems farfetched too me, but if you're right, more power to us!

Hey I bet if you told people 20 years ago that we would all have our own communicators like they do in Star Trek they would think it was a bit far fetched! 8)

It's funny the biggest reason I want to live longer is to see how pop culture and technology changes. ;D

Yep! My cousin's oldest is turning13. Boy is she going to have her hands full with him and trying to keep the youngest one in line. :( She doesn't have any problems with the middle one because nobody even knows that he's there because he's so quiet. In 5th grade right now and will be 11 in September. :)
