Subject: What year did 00's Music truly begin?

Written By: ExtremeMan8 on 08/05/12 at 2:24 am

When did the 2000s music era really begin? What year did we see 00's music start? I'm guessing 90s music started 1991 or 1992 and we are still in the 2000s music era and 10s music didn't really take off yet (Too early to tell as the decade just began 2 years ago and it still has 00s leftovers) But when did the 90s music style end and 00's music begin? My guess is somewhere around 2003?

Yeah, clearly 2003. Although in 2001 and 2002 there was some typical 00s music already.

But the current (mainstream) music doesn't feel like 00s anymore since halfway 2008 already, when the first singles of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga were released. I see this as another era. Typical 00s music sounded way more 'organic'.

00's music didn't start on a specific date or year. Every music era is connected through transistional periods that cover both eras.

2003. To me, 50 Cent is the epitome of 00s music and he released his first album that year. It's also the year all the pop-punk bands started switching to emo.

To me, 2003. That was the year that I noticed a shift in popular music and pop culture in general that was different from 2000-2002.

2003 with 'In Da Club', also crunk was exploding, also Beyonce's 'Crazy in Love'.

While I agree with you on this, It's hard to say if it will relate more to 10's music or 00s music until the 10s really hit full force.

I'd say late 2002.

The big question is: What IS 00's music?  ::)

Music from 2000 or 2001 does not sound 90's either, so it belongs to 00's music aswell.

In my opinion, the typical modern 00's style began somewhere in the late 90's - probably '98 or '99.

2000-02 still sound extremely 90s. Nu metal peaked in that era!

But overall it's really hard to tell when 90s style music stopped and 00s style music started since 90s and 00s music really blurred together.

It does not sound 90's. It sounds rather 'millennial' - a sound that started around 1999. Real 90's music however was over by 1997.

I agree with this, the '98-'03 period was it's own distinct era in music and pop culture.

I think the period we're in right now, maybe '08-'13/'14? is it's own distinct era too, an era of EDM dominance, tablets/smartphones, and economic crisis.

and don't forget rap, pop-rock and auto-tune.

Nearly the whole decade had a slight late 90's sound to it, imo.

Which would make late 90's music more 00's music - that's exactly my point.

Eminem released his best albums in 1999-2002, so if the "true" 00s music started in 2003, he would be 90's holdover artist? Same with Britney.
And yet they are considered the king and queen of 00s music.

This is true. I think it's too early to even say when it really began. Some people say 1998 and some say 2002.  :P

Yes I agree with you. In the future maybe someone can make a distinction on which decade it belongs to but it definitely has a very distinct feel to it like it is it's own decade which has never really happened in previous decades. Late 90s/Early00s are transitional and very distinct from the other decades.

Since we are talking about what year 00s music began, what about 90s music? Some people say 1991 and others say 1993 is when  the true 90s music feel came. What do you all think?

For me, the 90s started in 1988 already, with the introduction of dance, hiphouse, swingbeat, etcetera in the charts (at least here in Europe).  :P

I agree that '88 brought a lot 90's sounding music, but if you listen to the charts, the 80's sound is still the dominant one.

I am going to go against what most people here will probably say and say 1999.  The trends that defined the first half of the '00s all began in 1999.  Many 1999 songs could have easily been a it in 2003 but could not have been a hit in 1995.  1998 still had quite a few mid-90's sounding holdovers but not 1999. As for the end of '00s music, I say it hasn't happened yet.  Once stuff starts coming out that couldn't have been a hit in 2009, we can say the '00s music era is over.

I'd say it started around the time "Hey Ya!" by Outkast came out and ended either when or before "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga became popular. In short, 2003 -2007.

Those Outkast singles, from their album originally released in 2003, are for me the last hits with a 90s feel.

(Roses, in the Netherlands released as a single halfway 2004, is also the most recent track I play at Good Vibrations. That one fits the semi 90s format enough, but other tracks from the same era are doubt cases.)

Personally I disagree. Some of the big names of the 2000s (Eminem, Britney, Christina come to mind) first got big in 1999 but their first albums had a distinctly 90's sound that changed pretty drastically by the time they put out albums circa 2002.

1999 lacked crunk and emo and still had grunge, house music and fempop, it doesn't really seem that 00s to me. To answer the question I'd say 2001 is the year '00s music' started.

2002 I think but not 2003.

I think spring 2003(March.) I remember an R&B singer like Ginuwine who was big in 2002 was not big at all in 2003 or after.
