2006. Have a lot of fond memories of that year. My best times were from 2005 to 2009, those years were especially good to me. If I could re-live that '05 to '09 era again I most definitely would!

-Prime teenage year-
The greatest time of the 00's was probably 2000-mid 2004.
I am not very nostalgic about any time after it (my adult years), even though I did much more in that second half (traveling the world and so on, really started to live)...
But the first half was the last 'easy living' time for me.

2003 was a weird year for pop i def would not count it with my favs lol.
2001 was fun although 911 killed it and ended the 90s.
2008 was part 2 of the 2000s where everything changed it was a fun year.
Its funny in 2008 you had a feeling something was gunna change but you werent sure you were still in that 2006 2005 and 2004 mindset lol

2000 - Continuation of my happy and simple life from the 90's. I had just turned 21 and was going to clubs regularly and meeting a lot girls. It raised my expectations for the entire decade. Little did I know what followed.
2004 - Return to normality after the post-9/11 fear and paranoia. People were starting to feel optimistic. Music was good.
2005 - Good music, movies, TV shows, and video games. Also enjoying my single life until I met my now ex-wife. The Eurotrip was the main highlight of that year.
2008 - My life was going well despite the economic crisis. It was the first of my 3 years in Japan (the best years of my life). Music was really good, and offered a variety.
2009 - Was ok, but not as good as 2008. It was when I separated from the wife I met in 2005.

The entire early 2000s, up to the end of the first half of 2004, was a special time that really sticks out in my life. The pop culture was fun, the music was great, my favorite tv channel, Cartoon Network, was in its Golden Age. I had neighborhood friends who lived just across the fence from me, and they'd often come over to my house and we'd play on my Nintendo 64 and on my computer. In 2002, I got my own computer with internet access for the first time, and I had as much fun with it as you can imagine a preteen with his own internet access would. :)

Probably 2004. For the longest time, I seemed to be perpetually stuck in that year as I kept writing it as the date at the top of my papers even a few years after it passed. I never understood why I did that.
I also liked 2007 a lot as I graduated from high school that year and it was before the economic crash. I miss those times.

If this is due to the decadeology 'discussion', I'd like to quote one of the moderators:
Decadeology is not tolerated on the forum and all topics found as such will be promptly deleted. You will directed to this thread for reference.
What is decadeology?
~ Decadeology is the discussion and/or comparison of two or more years or decades that have no bearing on one another.(...) ~Threads like (hypothetical names here) "Why 1994 was great", "My favorite year of the 80s" or "Why the 60s ruled" are okay. (...)

I think 2001 had the best pop culture the '00s could have, there was Linkin Park, neo soul, french disco-house(Daft Punk, Modjo, Benjamin Diamond), euro-trance, The Neptunes style urban pop, '70s nostalgia at it's peak, dirty south rap becoming more popular, Timbaland making innovative beats, lingering '90s influences(post-grunge, baggy pants, pop punk), teen pop starting to fade. It was truly a very diverse period in the '00s.

2000, 2003, and 2008. Looking back, those years were golden and I would do anything to be able to go back to any of them.
The worst year of my life was 2009. That was the year my entire life, everything I ever hoped and dreamed for and everything I ever worked for went completely and totally down the crapper, and I still haven't even begun to recover.

I would give anything to go back to any year pre-2009. It doesn't matter the year, anything before 2009 and I'll be good. If I could go to sleep and wake up in 2008, I would wake up and run around jumping and screaming for joy!

Some of my most favorite movies of that year were Jurassic Park III, Pokemon The Movie 3:Spell of the Unown, Atlantis:The Lost Empire, Swordfish, The Lady and the Tramp 2:Scamp's Adventure, Pokemon:Mewtwo Returns, Harry Potter and the Socerer's Stone, A.I., Lord of the Rings:The Fellowship of the Ring, Shrek, Monster's Inc., Planet of the Apes, The Mummy Returns, Cats and Dogs, Dr. Dolittle 2, Jeepers Creepers, Jimmy Neutron:Boy Genius, Rush Hour 2, Osmosis Jones, Zoolander, and Spy Kids.
Some of the fads/trends I can remember were colored and cartoon-themed ketchup (unless if that came around 2002), skater fashion, Looney Tunes-themed shirts/sweaters, The Neptunes-style production, Timbaland-style production, Just Blaze-style production, Urban/Rock-influenced Pop music, Disney Radio, everything dealing with Pokemon, Digimon, Beyblade, and Yu-Gi-Oh, Dr. Dre-style production, "-izzle talk" (fozizzle my nizzle, popularized by Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, The Proud Family, etc.), Vanilla Coke, those funny commercials from Checkers (starting out with "You don't know nothing..."), Quiet Storm/Urban R&B music, Throwback Jerseys, Baggy Hip Hop fashion, WWF craze, Halo craze following the release of the original Xbox, Post-Grunge/Alternative Rock popularity, the almost phenomenal wave of patriotism (or nationalism, whichever's your take on what it really was) following the 9/11 attacks and the complete unquestioning public loyalty toward the Bush White House, and the rapid Harry Potter craze that was reminiscent of today's Hunger Games craze.
Some of my favorite television shows were Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Digimon Season 3, Cartoon Network including some of the new shows that debuted during that year such as Samurai Jack, Times Squad, and Grim and Evil. Toonami was experiencing one of its best years while it was airing new shows such as Cardcaptors, Zoids, Dragon Ball, Batman Beyond, The Big O, Outlaw Star, and Mobile Suit Gundam, etc. Nickelodeon was still airing popular holdovers from the 90's such as Hey Arnold, The Wild Thornberrys, Spongebob, Cousin Skeeter, The Rugrats, CatDog, All That, The Amanda Show, etc. as well as new shows such as the Fairly Oddparents, Men In Black:The Series, and The Animaniacs. On UPN, there was Moesha, the final season of Pepper Ann, The Weekenders, Recess, The Legend of Tarzan, Digimon, Buzz Lightyear of StarCommand, and Sabrina, the Animated Series. On the Disney Channel, they was airing Even Stevens, Lizzie McQuire, The Proud Family, Recess, So Weird, and Disney's House of Mouse.
The only bad things that occurred during this year were the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon outside of D.C. in Northern Virginia (the elementary school in PG County I was attending to at the time of the attacks during 4th grade was just 10 minutes outside of D.C. city limits), and Flight 93. Then there was the whole Anthrax scare in October (I vaguely remember it), and the untimely death of Aaliyah (her old and new songs were all over the radio after her death).
Other than that, 2001 was THE BEST year in my childhood and my most favorite year of the 2000s!!! 8) My Top 5 most favorite "naught" years are in order...2001, 2005, 2007, 2003, and 2008. ;D

I'm not sure if I've responded to this thread before or not, but I would say 2004 would be my favorite year of the 00's.
I was a Freshman in highschool this year. I spent the majority of my free time playing Diablo 2 with my then boyfriend and his best friend. At school, I hung out in the library every morning before class with him and several female friends and surfed the internet. The "library president" of the time was an arrogant dork who thought he was cool and ended up being trolled frequently by us. This year, I took many art classes and met one of my favorite teachers. I also had much fun causing mischief. I still get a giggle whenever I think of the day we made candles. ;D Oh, and of course, I can't forget those LAN parties with Unreal Tournament. ^^ Several movies also hit theaters this year which I still enjoy watching to this day.

This is actually quite difficult, but I gotta go with these:
2000: The last year of my childhood. That alone gives this a ton of nostalgia value, particularly when 2001 was a pretty mediocore year (decent first half being canceled out by a definite not-so-good second half).
2004: A good year that saw a definite improvement in my life from the not-so-good late 2001 to 2003 years. I really got into music and pop culture this year (whereas before I didn't care too much about music, trends, fashion, etc.), so things like that particularly stand out. This "honeymoon period" with pop culture would last into 2005 too, it seems to fit in fairly well with 2004 pop culturally.
2006: This was a very relaxed, laid back year for me. While not perfect, my life was quite comfortable. I also didn't mind a lot of the pop culture of the time except for the horrid Hip-Hop scene. The first half of 2007 was pretty good too (senior year), but the second half was really forgettable.

The pre-9/11 2000's were pretty decent (2000- first 3/4 or 2001 or to about 2002). The rest of the decade had very questionable pop culture. If you listen to pop charts starting from 2003/2004 that's when I noticed going down south fast. 2003 - 2009 :-X

I agree, I really don't get how people like 2003 very much, especially when it was around the time where the 00s really started to developed its own identity. The only reason why I don't have too much of an issue with 2005 and summer of 2006 is because it had a mid 90s feel to it.

2003-2005 was very, very core 00s. If someone from the future goes back to 2004, they will probably know they are in the 2000s decade. Late 2005 to 2007 is still very 00s with a few hints of what's to come up with social media and a little change in music. These years still have the 00s feel but were slowly transitioning. 2008 is when the big hit and transition happened and the culture transitioned a bit from the core 00s feeling. Of course early 2000s and late 90s were it's own era as well with a bit more 90s flare to it imo.

Basically agree here, although I might still include late 2005 (and maybe even early 2006 at a loose stretch) as core 2000s. But definitley, if someone wants to know what quintessential noughties musics sounds like, just direct them to late 2003/early2004-mid 2005.
What song do you think best defines the 2000s pop culture-wise? I'm kind of thinking Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand.

My favorite year of the 2000s. My favorite year pop culturally and my second favorite for life in general (after the year 2000) is 2004!

2003 because of my personal life and songs like:
'Crazy In Love' (Beyonce)
'Shut Up' (The Black Eyed Peas)
'Rock Your Body' (Justin Timberlake)
'White Flag' (Dido)
'I Begin to Wonder' (Dannii Minogue)
'Intuition' (Jewel)
'Fighter' (Christina Aguilera)
...and many more!
6 years later I agree, but I'll add that 2004 had some fun music as well.
I'll also add 2008 and 2009 for music and 2005-2009 for TV and movies. Looking back they had their moments.
