Subject: the mid-2000s (2004-2007) emo/pop-punk myspace era

Written By: baaa on 10/02/11 at 3:57 am

does anybody miss this time period and realize how distinctive pop culturally it was from the eras that came before and after it?

really started with Green Day American Idiot in 2004
myspace peaked around 2005-2006, the shift to facebook began in 2007
people still used AIM
cell phones sucked and the coolest one out there was the RAZR, which is extremely dorky and ugly by todays standards
My Chemical Romance and Fall Ouy Boy were the holy duo of emo pop and basically defined the sound and style of this period
copy cat one-hit wonders like All American Rejects
skateboarding was cool
a shift in the video game industry to the current xbox 360, ps3, wii
we all had really long hair
southern rap/crunk/soulja boy style rap was really popular, now all we have is wiz khalifa, kanye, and the remnants of lil wayne and rick ross

before 2004 we were stuck in the 90s
and now everything is totally different, people look different, music sounds different (we will never have a pop punk rock band in the top of the charts again)
and we had this one period with such a rich pop culture in the mid 00s
does anybody agree how distinctive this time was or am i just too nostalgic

I do agree that a lot of pop culture before 2004/2005 seemed like a 1999 time loop.

I remember a lot of that. I was in junior high from 2004 until 2006, and it seemed that the student population of my junior high school could be divided into two categories - the hip-hop/crunk aficionados, and the emo/punk inclined (the group which I mostly drifted toward). I remember the music and fashion of that time period quite well. I had a punk friend who was obsessed with Green Day, and a lot of my punk friends mentioned My Chemical Romance quite often (a group whose songs I never did get a chance to listen to). I also remember a lot of my classmates singing the song In Love Wit A Stripper all the time, which annoyed the hell out of me, as well as the huge breakout of the song I Write Sins Not Tragedies in early 2006, a song that I never did care for.

I didn't get a Myspace until 2007, the year I turned sixteen. Myspace remained relatively dominant among my high school classmates until early 2009. I think I got a Facebook in late 2008, and at the time I was reluctant to do so because I tend to err on the side of the status quo, but that's an entirely different topic to get into.

I think the mid '00s era got started off when In The Club exploded in popularity and bling rap/crunk was the dominant culture of this time period(about '03 to '07/'08).

The mid-00s was a difficult time in my life, but had I been in a better mood I would've enjoyed it more.  :-\\

The music at the time was even worse than now in my opinion. Crunk and rap music was EVERYWHERE on the radio! But despite that everything else was fine, tv, movies, etc. was normal and fine.

And I really liked the energy of the mid-00s now that I look back at it!

I remember this era too. I was in high school during most of it (2005-2009). Shaggy wings hair, emo, reality shows (peaked during this time), myspace, and glam rap! Definitely the definitive 00s to me, especially the year 2006.

Looking back I actually have fond memories of it. I usually would say it sucked, but I guess as we get older we miss it. I was in HS from 2005-2009 and my HS experience was okay. I miss 2005 because it was pretty cool.  Early days of Myspace and Youtube were awesome. I wasn't really fond of emo punk stuff. I liked some new songs from that era from Nelly Furtado and others like T.I. I used Instant Messages fom like 2002-2007.

I kinda miss this era seeing that it was the extent of my high school days. (2004-2008) I miss sitting at lunch with all my friends talking about iPods or the latest games and movies and other random stuff. We all saw and hung out with each other. Now everybody has gone their separate ways since then and the only way I get to see some of them is through Facebook.  :\'(

I was late to the Myspace party. (Joined in August 2006). But I Joined Facebook in November 2006 when i was in 11th grade and  the majority of people i knew didn't have one. And i also felt a little unwelcomed because Facebook was starting to open to the general public so half the groups were from angry college students like "High schoolers get the **** off Facebook!" or "Facebook is for college ONLY." Ect...Ect. Now everyone and their grandma has one. lol.

But what I don't miss was a lot of the music of that time. I personally would take 2011 music any day over 2006-2007 stuff like "Laffy Taffy" "Grillz" "Pop Lock N Drop It" "Lean Wit It Rock Wit It" "Snap Yo Fingers" "Ay Bay Bay" or emo stuff that was clogging the airwaves.  ::) :P

I was in Community College during those years.  Wasn't into emo, but knew people I worked with that there, or were into bands that were precieved as emo(Good Charlotte).  I remember watching a lot of Adult Swim, especially Harvey Birdman, Aqua Teen, and Home Movies.  I partied a lot too, and eventually joined a martial arts class.  I remember when it was 6/6/06 and people came to Best Buy out of the woodworks dressing up as some satanic figure.  Too bad the Omen sucked  8-P.  I did went to a lot of concerts during this time also, such as the Roger Waters, Poison, Velvet Revolver one(mix band with Stone Temple Pilots and Guns N Roses).  I remember hating Myspace though everyone I know said "Everybody is using it."  Didn't join FaceBook until 2008 I believe.

It is weird that this thread has  popped up, because the mid 2000s were like yesterday for me.

Yeah, good times...
And don't forget that in the mid-2000s post-grunge was still king

That was my favorite era of the 2000's. It was kind of the break and relaxing period between the post 9/11 fear/paranoia of the early 00's and the Great Recession of the late 00's. I was in my mid-20's at the time, which was a great time to be single. I remember using MySpace like it was a dating site and chatting with random girls.

Feels like the 'real' 00s to me, but that's always the case with the mid section of a decade.

I remember floral and baroque patterns everywhere, when thinking of this era. As a wallpaper in many houses, in shop windows, as a background on about 478439348349 websites/profile pages...

I like 2003-2005 but 2006-2007 was different and less good. 2004 was one of the '00s best years on the other hand.
