Subject: 2008 was especially changeful.

Written By: youngerderek on 04/15/11 at 1:35 pm

I really feel like the end of the Noughties came with the campaign of Barack Obama, beginning circa February 2008. I also think the music started to change too. Kanye came out with "Heartless", which is a very 2010s-sounding song. The fashion changed as well. People started to dress like hipsters en masse.

Gay/lesbian/bi culture also became very mainstream I think in 2008. 2008 was the first year that Lady Gaga began to become famous. Not to mention, it was the first year of the Great Recession. I really think the 2010s began early...

It happens every decade. The transition to the next decade usually begins in the 8th year of the previous one.

I would go a step ahead and say 2008 actually felt like the 2010s already. Certainly 2009 did. I mean, is today really any different from 2009?

Chances are good that if it's a topic with a year in the title, and the main post doesn't make sense, then it's all about decadeology

There was definitely a change in 2008.  But was it the start of "2010s culture" as OP says?  It's still way too early in the 2010s to make that call.  Heck, the dominant culture of the new decade usually doesn't become popular until the second half of the second year of the decade.  Granted, those trends are usually set up in the last couple years of the previous decade, but it's still early to tell what late 00s trends will be regarding at "setting up" for 2010s culture and which ones weren't.

Wait until 2012, then we can get a better picture of what's going on.

For some time now, I too have felt that things done changed in 2008. Compare 2007 to today and then 2008 to today.. I'm sure you can see the resemblance from one to another. The auto-tune really took of in 2008, I thought it was an awesome year! The election was crazy and change was most definetley in the air! I think the whole recessionary mood started 2009, but its roots are certainly in late 2007 to 2008. Politically things changed majorly in 2008. Music and Cinema changed too I believe with the Hangover and the Dark Knight, as well as the advent of 3D!

Well let's see, the US got it's first african-american president, the recession got into full swing by the end of that year, electropop/dance music exploded in popularity and replaced hip-hop/R&B as the dominant mainstream music, emo began to decline, ect. 2008 "was" a turning point in american history(especially in a economic sense), probably even more than 2001(911), I know that changes happen in every year but in a cultural context, some years have had more significant changes. Maybe the thread title should have been phrased more specific, maybe like "there was significant cultural changes in 2008".

Yeah I would say around that time.
Most people would agree that the popular practice of downloading music started in 1997, when the software known as Napster was released.  Napster was free software that allowed people to share the contents of their music collections online, and pick and choose what to download from others, in a free communal environment.  For the first time, many people began to share songs over the Internet and get their music through the process of downloading, rather than buying CDs. Thus, this can be seen as the start of the music revolution and the time when downloading music started.

IMO, I felt 2009 was more of a changeful year since that was the year Obama assumed office. Some of the changes started in Late '08, but overall that year fit better with 2005-07, at least pop-culture wise. Even Lady Gaga didn't start getting a lot of airplay until early '09. Economically, 2008 was when the Great Recession began (actually late '07 officially).

The last year Paris Hilton was revelant was like 2006 anyway.  Her popularity was more 2003-2006 anyway. She wasn't even revelant in early-mid 2007 when core 00's culture was still going on.

As I say alot on these boards there was that period that was filled with big obsessions with every celebs every move(2003-2006.) That trend died down somewhere in 2006.

I remember when she put out her album in 2006  8-P luckily it bombed.

I remember still hearing a lot about Paris Hilton in 2007, but little to nothing after that year.

I would also extend the celeb obsession thing into 2007 because of the whole Britney, lindsey lohan, and Amy Winehouse (remember her?) ordeals. You couldn't go a day without hearing something about them in 2007.

Its still going on a little bit (Kim Kardashian?) but toned down compared to the core 00s.

I think that's pretty common, for the first few years of a new decade to have a "afterglow" of the previous decade(cultural speaking of course). I would not say the pop culture now(as of 2011) is a toned down version of the 00s though, more like a mixture of a few 00s holdovers and things that will evolve further during the decade(probably electronic music).

I could be wrong, after all, back in 1961 you could make a good case, based on what the 60s was like up to that point, that the sixties began in 1959. so 2011 still could be the late stages of the 2000s, or it could be well into the 10s, depending on if much changes between now and say, 2017.

But honestly I can't imagine 2017 having that much different a pop culture than 2011. It probably will be as much like today as today is like 2005 (that is somewhat different but still definitely the same epoch).

I think since 1991, the rate of pop cultural change has slowed a lot. Crap, 2011 has a '90s afterglow, as well as a 00s, yet it still seems 10s, just because the difference between decades is not quite what it once was.

I feel the change from the 90s to 00s was more gradual instead of the reactionary cultural change from the 80s to 90s(where you can pinpoint this change around 1991-ish), I think the change from the 60s to 70s was very gradual as well. Sometimes the cultural changes are very gradual from one era to the next but every now and then we get these abrupt changes, 1991 compared to 2011 seems ancient though.

I would say its too early to determine 2010s culture.  2008 started late '00s culture in my opinion, which is the culture we still have today.

I agree. I think a lot of it had to do with elements of pop culture shared between the two decades as well. The essences of '80s pop culture, such as New Wave and Hair Metal, and all the fashions that came with it, were only strong up to 1990, and were almost completely vaporized by 1993. That's not to say the '80s and '90s didn't have anything in common of course --- I think they had a lot in common, especially when it comes to things like children's fads and TV programming, and things like Televangelism. Another thing that makes the late 1980s to mid 1990s, like more or less 1987-1996, seem like an era of sorts is the fact you had shows like Full House. Married with Children, Family Matters, and Roseanne running through that period.

While the '90s and '00s had a lot of core musical things in common, such as the strong presence of gangsta rap and Alternative music throughout the majority of both decades (like 1992-2007 or so) and also shared a lot of TV shows (The Simpsons, The Real World, South Park, Friends). Plus I think the Internet boom era was divided in half by the year 2000 so the latter 90s and earlier 00s are sort of united by that.

I would say its too early to determine 2010s culture.  2008 started late '00s culture in my opinion, which is the culture we still have today.

Nah, to me late 2000s culture would be that from the second half of 2005 to maybe the first half of 2008. There wasn't really a 'middle' 00s in my opinion, the period was too short and transient. i personally felt like we went straight from barely being over the late '90s to a style almost like the present day from the beginning to the end of 2005. you basically just had the early 00s (2001-04) which were really just the "years after the '90s" and then the 2005-2007 which was when the current trends started to bubble up and you had things like MySpace and Emo which only lasted in those few years for the most part.

2008? ??? I guess these things are very subjective(and thus causes endless discussions and annoyances to some ;D), I tend to think the late 00s was definitely late '06 to late '08(ringtone rap, emo era) with late '08/2009 being the start of the early 10s pop culturally.

gradual shift.  The reason why the early 90s had a huge backlash of the 80s was due to the 1991 being the final year of the Cold War era that has been going on since the 50s.

But really 2008 is just another year to the rest of the world.

I think Ashanti was "cool" from 2002-2004 but not after that.

Oh yeah I forgot about the Paris Hilton album back in 2007.

Yeah so we have Kim Kardashian and Snooki that are still kinda held back 00's stars in a toned down way as you said.

It still pretty much feels like the 00s, especially with a lot of the music (ahem Lil Wayne?). What were in right now is basically a toned down version of the 00s. This should continue until some point in 2012 or 2013, when the actual 10s culture begins.

Still waiting for that big 00s backlash. I want to see something akin to what happened to 80s culture in the 90s. The 00s sucked.
What I do hear though is people asking are Britney and Kim Kardashian talented? I myself never heard that question before until the last couple weeks.

I've never considered Britney that talented, she has never written anything (that I know of, maybe I'm wrong), doesn't play an instrument, and her voice is studio-doctored. I guess she can dance?

Kim Kardashian is attractive but thats about it. Being famous for soley being attractive is a definitive 2000s trait. Thats why I think there's still some holdover.

Didn't read beyond the first page, but I just wanted to add my two cents:

In 2006, I switched from a public high school which as I think back on it was very conservative in the sort of "culture" the student and staff body had formed there: generally seeing the war as necessary if not supporting it outright, no real dialogue about global warming, most if not all teachers were (devout) Christians, and I was friends with the only Muslim girl in the entire freaking school.  Also I was somewhat of a pariah for being a metalhead and actually supporting gay rights (not gay, but a believer in civil rights nonetheless).

I ended up going for my last two years in high school to a private high school with a reputation for both academic excellence and balls-to-the-wall liberalism and progressivism.  I mean this was basically where aged hippies sent their children to school, and then many of those same parents were even teachers.  We had a Day of Silence for LGBT, we had yearly Diversity Day, school assemblies based around going vegan so we could save the trees/animals/planet, and like five students who vocally identified as Republican.  We also had a very large and influential Sierra Club, which was great for me since I was really concerned about global warming.

From late 2007 until graduation in summer '08 I did sorta feel like society as a whole was becoming a lot more liberal or like they were striving more towards these more liberal ideas.  I remember my homeroom teacher mentioning this green TV channel and how environmentalism had become more like a cult rather than a movement towards creating meaningful change.  I always wondered if this was all because people were getting so sick of Bush that the country as a whole was liberalizing, or whether my own involvement in this liberal culture made me more aware of it.  Either way, I can concur that at some point in 2008 we had some sort of paradigm shift which I would strongly attribute to our country's weariness with the Bush presidency.

2008 wasn't just changeful in terms of the '00s or '10s, it was the year our entire national mood and culture shifted.  What happened in 2008 was much bigger than any of us could have comprehended at the time and we wont be able to get a full grasp on it until several years from now.  It was bigger than just the election of our first black President.  It was bigger than the stock market collapse.  What happened is as a society, we basically rejected the ideals of and put an end to the Reagan era.  It makes more sense if you look at history in eras rather than decades.  From 1980 through 2008, ideals were very individualistic, selfish, nationalistic, greed-dominated, etc.  In many ways, the '80s never ended (not speaking music/fashion wise but ideals). In 2008, we saw many of these ideas reverse.

1929, 1941, 1963, 1980, and 2008 were all years that marked these paradigm shifts.

And the Tea Party/Republican Party still pushes Reagan era values.
Yeah but they are to the right of Reagan in my opinion. I mean the "The Ryan Plan" is way to the right of Reagan.

this isnt' a gay topic. a gay topic would be like 'Do you like penis?' or 'What is your favorite Pet Shop Boys song?'

Now you're implying if someone likes penis or Pet Shop Boys that they're gay.  There are straight women that like penis.  There are many straight people that like Pet Shop Boys.

Pot, meet kettle.

2008 was an important year because of the election, the recession and the stock market crash, dance-pop really gained momentum, katy perry and lady gaga debuted in 08. Though the momentum for dance pop really goes back to 2005-2006, I really think Timbaland's work was key in loosening that absolute rap dominance that persisted in the US for a while. 2008 was when everybody started using autotune, in 2006-2007 it was mostly just T-Pain. Unsurprisingly T-Pain tanked in popularity once everybody started using the autotune.

All the radio formats have changed over the years, urban radio seems especially r&b leaning right now, pop radio is mostly dance pop, hot ac is one of the most shocking it is a lot more rhythmic/dance leaning than it was in the early-mid '00s when it was mostly singer songwriter stuff and post grunge, today you hear a lot of the pitbull, katy perry, ke$ha, gaga stuff on hot ac stations and a lot less rock influenced stuff.

2008 also was when Twitter and Facebook soared and Myspace tanked by the end of the year. The 2008 election was notable for being the first presidential election of the social media era. Also 2008 was when smartphones started to get huge, and the App Store came out in 2008, and later in the year the very first Android phone the T-Mobile G1!

I'd say 2007 set the groundwork for change while 2008 did it. That's the year Katy Perry and Lady Gaga blew up  :\'( This alone would make anyone hate the year 2008 but 2007-2009 were just awful years for me on a personal level so I'd rather much forget all about the late 00's.

Didn't GaGa and Perry blow up in 2008? I know Katy had that "Ur So Gay" song in late 2007 though it wasn't successful, but I don't know of anything from GaGa that was released in 2007. "Just Dance" actually didn't blow up till about November/December 2008, though I had known the song about 6 months before that. Timbaland produced hits like "SexyBack", "Promiscuous", "The Way I Are" from 2006-2007 are what laid the groundwork for the electropop explosion imo. If you want to go back a little further...Gwen Stefani's "Love Angel Music Baby" is one mid '00s album that could still be big today, it's got all the cheesiness and electro influence of later '00s music.

Actually I don't think GaGa blew up until early 2009, if not late 2008 at the earliest. I remember the first song I heard from her was "Just Dance", which I put on my iPod in early '09. Later in the year, her songs "Poker Face" and "Bad Romance" got played out. 2008 was more of Katy Perry's year. I remember her song "I Kissed a Girl" being big that summer.

GaGa started blowing up at the end of 2008 around November. Though I knew "Just Dance" like way back in June, I remember I had seen a banner ad for the song on the internet.

I have to agree.

I was a senior in high school for the '08-'09 school year and the first time I ever heard of Lady Gaga was in my final semester (Spring '09). I was in a drawing class that semester and a girl in my class did a distorted grid drawing of picture of Lady Gaga. Before that I had no idea who she was. That was probably around March...then by that Summer, her songs were all over the radio!

Its weird seeing her in the classic 2000s mtv Trl era.  As you had described  Lady Gaga didn't really pop off until November.
November is also when Trl had its last month ever as a show.  So its kind of weird seeing her with all these 2000s type
artists and in that format. When Gaga game out  Rap was still in the ringtone rap era and Timbaland was still king.

Yeah 2008 was a HUGE transitional year. 1st half and second half of that year were like two different worlds. Things have changed a lot since 2008 and it's the first year of the 2000's that's similar to today. I think 2008 was the biggest cultural transitional year since 1991. (From 80's to 90's grunge period)
