Subject: South Park vs Family Guy

Written By: joeman on 03/23/11 at 10:04 pm

Both shows are still on, but on average, what had the better show in the 2000s?  South Park had the Death of Chef, Cartoon Wars, Imagination Land.  Family Guy had Stewie Finally killing Lois(fake), Peter and the Chicken Fight, Conway Twitty, and Quagmire cheating on Cleveland's wife.

I can't choose myself honestly, but I am leaning towards Family Guy here.

South Park is not funny, the animation is bad, and it makes no sense.  I wouldn't vote South Park for $1,000,000 :D

Is South Park even still popular? I haven't heard anyone talk about it in quite a while.

Hard time choosing here, too.  Love 'em both.

South Park's problem is that although they do an amazing job at being up to date with whatever's going on in pop culture at that moment, the gaps between seasons are so long that they miss a lot of winnage.  For example, Charlie Sheen and Rebecca Black are perfect fodder for South Park, but we'll probably forgotten about them by the time South Park starts up again, and they won't get the treatment they're due.  Lotta good laughs left on the table.

Family Guy's problem is that when it works, it's awesome, but when it fails, it fails badly.  There's no way to tell which category into which a gag is going to fall until the punchline (or lack thereof).  I still smile with the memory of individual gags like the Chicken-vs-Peter fight, the Shipoopi breakout at the football game, and that certain orniFOO BAR DON'T!, but I can't remember a damn thing about the jokes that fell flat.  Your list of jokes that made you smile (or cringe) will be completely different than mine.

The intermittent positive reinforcement (for any given joke) isn't a bug, it's the key feature that's at the heart of Family Guy's success.  So long as it gives 'em the ability to turn out universally-enjoyed things like the Star Wars/WW2 full-hour parodies, we'll all keep tuning in to see what the manatees provide for us next week.

South Park: Certificate of Deposit yielding 5 snickers and 1 guffaw per 22 minutes.

Family Guy: Slot Machine that yeilds a random number between 1-5 LOLWUTs with a 50% beerspill, 10% fistpounding fit of laughter, and 1% chance of hitting the literal ROFL in tears of laughter jackpot.

I just heard them the other day in an interview and they said it gets harder and harder to do this now, compared to in the beginning.  They said they are not feeling old per say, but "tired"  haha.  I think pushing out a new episode every week is starting to get to them

Yeah, I don't think they will do it just to break records like Groening and his Simpsons. South Park is still very popular, not as popular as it was a decade ago but still probably one of the top 5 most popular shows if you go by Facebook likes, but I think it's beginning to become a bit dated.

I went for "South Park" for TWO Reasons...

"South Park" didn't end for 3 years then resume like "Family Guy" and the last episode I watched called "Tiegs for Two" showed us an unfunny episode with the Brian vs. Quagmire Soap Opera! http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/15/violent1.gif

I'm hating Quagmire more and more and Loving Brian more and more everytime I see this show, and if "Family Guy" uses Internet Quotes and such, they should use this for the Next Brian vs. Quagmire Story....

I can see Quagmire as NC and Brian as AVGN!

As in the words of Marty McFly in "Back to the Future"...

HE'S AN ASSHOLE!

Quagmire just fudges women and doesn't want responsibility! Sure, Quagmire would take time to work at a soup kitchen...but I never seen him there.

And Quagmire is VERY narrow-minded, Brian was once a bum, he took care of the elderly, he's basically the father figure when Peter does something stupid, he went to an Ivy-League School though he flunked twice...maybe he can try Stanford, he LOVES women and wants to find Ms. Right, I can go on with Brian and I think he's only an atheist because he thinks that he doesn't have a soul.

s9e14 OK.  s8e18 better.

Unlike s8e17, in which Brian and Stewie got locked in the bank vault with unspeakably predictable (albeit still funny) results, I've gotta tip my hat to Quagmire's Dad, Season 8, Episode 18, took the cake for the best ending of any Family Guy episode ever.  Especially after s8e17 went... well, it where it went, I was totally not expecting the next episode to go there.  Best.  Ending.  Evar.  And no, I won't spoil it.  It's like the Chicken Fight, but better.

Definitely going with South Park.  Family Guy was great stuff for the first three seasons (pre-cancellation), average for the fourth season (when it was revived), bad fifth season and, from what I've seen, even worse subsequent ones.

South Park has its fair share of dud episodes.  If you ever watch South Park on Comedy Central when you're bored, like I do, you'll notice that the dud episodes are NEVER replayed.  On the whole though, a new South Park episode still has a 50/50 good-bad ratio, compared to Family Guy's 10/90 good-bad ratio.

My favorite South Park episodes are when they push Cartman into his most satanic persona:

1. The Scott Tenorman episode in which he gets revenge on the older kid by grinding his parents into chili and feeding it to him.
2. The Fat Camp episode in which Cartman starts a blackmarket candy store ("Mr. Candy Bar doesn't judge you...")
3. The Dog Whisperer episode in which Cartman only appears to be tamed by the dog whisperer, in fact, he's only become more diabolical!

I like Family Guy but definitely love South Park. It's sadistic stupid satire strikes a chord with me.  8)

I can see where you are coming from here though I think South Park do pretty well with the material they have. I guess even South Park animators need a break once in a while. One gripe I do have with South Park is they need to balance the kids normal life with their crazy life more to flesh out the characters.

Strangely, some of my favourite South Park episodes are the ones featuring Canada. The second season episode 'Terrance and Philip: Not without my anus' is still one of their best in my opinion, I love watching Scott the lawyer. There is also another cracking Canada-based episode where Canada are lead on strike by an hilarious antagonist called Steve Abootman. He gets frustrated when the world leaders don't take Canada's strike seriously despite the deaths it creates:

"Don't call me your guy, fwend!
I'm not your fwend, guy!
I'm not your guy, buddy!
I'm not your buddy, fwend!"

Family Guy seemed to get more frenetic after it's return to syndication as, for the most part before this, the story-line stayed stable and wasn't just something to hang a load of jokes from.

I can remember a really pathetic Family Guy 'joke'. It was in season 8 and Peter Griffin and the gang were in a spa. Peter Griffin was commentating that he needed to relax after the stressful morning he had. The camera cuts to Peter Griffin taking the part of Michael J Fox in Back to the Future, heading to school on his skateboard, hitching a ride from a couple of passing vehicles, waving at women training in the gym as he goes. The music is Huey Lewis's Power of love and the punchline is just Peter Griffin singing the end line 'The Power of Love'...It's like they feel the film reference is enough to get the joke over.

The biggest problem Family Guy has is it doesn't know when to let go of a joke. After making it's point, the joke has to drag on for a further minute.

Very rarely, there's a payoff (a payoff.  A pay-OFF?  A PAY off.  *skipping for 30 seconds*  a pay-off) after the filler gag.  I'm willing to concede that sometimes the manateewriters just don't have enough material to do a full 22 minutes, and they need to burn some time, so I turn a blind eye to it, even if it's usually disappointing.  The lulz from the rest of the show outweigh the discomfort from the occasional bit of filler.

Besides, it's not like I can claim an exemption here.  I appreciate the problem, but I never let it stop me from being part of the problem :)

Overall, Family Guy, especially in the mid-2000's seasons. The early ones were good too. The last few seasons were still good, but they seem to have lost their material. South Park's current season (Season 15) is really good so far, especially the episode about "Tween Wave", which is something that can relate to this forum about the current state of music.

Yeah, the tween wave music in that South Park episode does sound like dubstep. Maybe its supposed to be. I've never seen that KOTH episode but that clip was funny, and I wonder if South Park got the idea from that.

Very probably.

The "it's all toilet sounds" clip is from the King of the Hill series pilot in 1997.  The original joke is probably a reference to the Jerky Boys, whose recorded telephone pranks were at the peak of their commercial success from 1994-1999.  (I originally thought of the Touch-Tone Terrorists, but aside from earlier radio appearances, their first CD release was 1998.)

Given the time differences (and the fact that culture moved slower back then), I'm going to bet on the Jerky Boys unless/until someone can come up with a TTT radio reference that both clinches with some toilet sounds and dates to before January 1997, which was when the KotH pilot aired.
