Subject: What is the best way to tell apart a street scene from 2000 and 2009?
Written By: yelimsexa on 04/17/10 at 10:36 am
We've discussed this similarly on the 80s forum, and given that the decade just ended and still fresh in our minds; now would be a good time to discuss the biggest changes at street scenes between 2000 and 2009. There are quite a few I can point out.
First, the trend of getting rounder cars continues even further from the 1990s, where by 2009, it looks like "the future" from many movies set in the 1960s-80s. Advertising also continues to grow with more small signs, real estate signs that get flashier and edgier as the decade progresses, and more "supergraphics" (large billboards) in certain areas, and in the late '00s, more and more digital billboards.
Certain types of stores have sadly passed; in 2000, it isn't difficult to find music/video stores around, sadly they're gone.

A young, fit Britney Spears was dancing and singing live on the sidewalk in 2000. Now, a not so young or fit Britney Spears is nearly dancing and lip syncing in 2009.
Other than that...it all looks pretty much the same to me...

If you saw Britney on the street in 2000, you'd be like "Awwwwwwww"

I don't think Britney Spears looks that scary now I mean she doesn;t have a shaved head anymore because she has grown her hair out.

Underneath all that hair is still a bald head. I bet she wears a wig :D

-Flared jeans (in 2000) vs. skinny jeans and boyfriend jeans (in 2009).
-Muffin tops (in 2000) vs. longer tops (in 2009).
-Lounge music hype (in 2000) vs. almost no lounge music anymore (in 2009).
-Many cybercafes (in 2000) vs. almost no cybercafes anymore (in 2009).
-Many independent cd shops (in 2000) vs. almost no independent cd stores anymore (in 2009). Here in Holland, about three fourths of the cd stores are 'Free Record Shop' chain stores, selling currently mostly games and dvds...

The cars, the fashion, certain signs/logos, gas prices, technology ie basic cell phones in 2000 compared to touch smartphones in 2009.

Gas prices, that's a good one. Also, people generally looked happy and optimistic in 2000, while 2009 had more of a gloomy look and feel. Also in 2009, a lot of realtor signs in front of homes that read something like "foreclosure" or "reduced price". Also, certain companies that no longer exist in 2009 that were around in 2000, such as MCI, Washington Mutual, Northwest Airlines, and certain department/retail stores.
Cell phones have especially changed since then. I remember in 2000 having one of those old Nokia phones that had a monochrome screen and those annoying chirping ringtones, and just had Snake or Dice as games.

If it's a NYC street scene and you see the Twin Towers in the background, it's obviously 2000 and not 2009!
:(

Everything's getting so old, 2004 even seems rather primitive now by 2010 standards, not to mention the year 2000 which seems practically ancient to me now. Going back to the still technical 20th century would be a trip. Add the fact that it was pre Bush and 9/11 it was a different world.

Yep. That's how I'm able to tell whether a certain movie (or music video) taking place in NYC was made pre-9/11 or post-9/11. :(

Its kind of odd no one touched on this, but kinda stepped around it...
The biggest difference between a 2000 and 2009 or present street scene?
1. The lack of, vanishing of pay-phones due to the proliferation of cellphones.
2. The domination and common placement of video/CCTV cameras. (You must of noticed that Big Brother is watching).
3. The disappearance of regular parking meters for a centralized "one box" parking meter center.
4. The commonplace observance of people walking around with white cords hanging out of their heads, i.e. earpods/headphones via iPod, Zune, other mp3 listening devices.

I hate those! I remember when they started taking over the municipal lots. Waste of paper, waste of time. The only advantage is sometimes there's only one box for an entire lot, and if it breaks, FREE PARKING! But sometimes there are two boxes and you have to walk all the way down to the other side of the lot to get a ticket if the machine near you is broken. One time I had to do that and I turned around to see the dipwad parking cop looking in my windshield. Had to yell, "Excuuuuse meeeee! That's MY car!" while I waved the little slip of paper." Felt like a total gaylord.

To add to that, the blue tooth devices that people wear in their ears.
