I wonder if this is the end of the stereotypical "materialistic, spoiled Gen Yer" phase and the start of a new phase for Gen Y. Certainly a harsh way to come of age.

I dunno, but I do know that future generations are going to have it worse than the people living today because of the way global economical system is being.

bah... Generation X already has it's first US president (Obama was born in '61 the first year of the generation), Clinton was the first Boomer president, and that was long after eligible Boomers could have been in the highest office.
Gen Y grew up during the 90s, during a more up beat time, and finished college during a financially depressing time (the 2000s) kind of the opposite of Gen X.

True but we must remember that there was a light recession from 1989 to 1990, and a deep recession from 1991 to 1993 as well.

I thought Obama was a member of the baby boomer generation albiet a very late baby Boomer since he was born in 1961. I thought the first year of Generation X was 1964 or 1965 officially.
The 2000's were not depressing at all economically until 2008 when the stock market crashed, Lehman Brothers went out of business and high gas prices.

Yeah but the 1991-1993 recession was a pretty mild recession when compared to the early 1980's and September 2008-present recessions.

There seems to be too much grey area on the boundaries of these generations. Here's how I see it...
before 1915: Lost Generation
1915-1925: GI Generation
1926-1939: Silent Generation
1940-1953: Baby Boomers
1954-1961: Generation Jones
1962-1974: Full-fledged Generation X
1975-1985: Generation X/Y cusp
1986-1993: Full-fledged Generation Y
1994-2001: Generation Y/Z cusp
2002-?: Full-fledged Generation Z

I dunno, Obama was campaigned as being a part of the "post-Baby Boom." I honestly think people born around say 1957-1965(give or take two) can go either way because most likely their parents did not serve WWII.
I agree with you that the economy wasn't bad until 2008. The recession in the early 90's, or at least what people told me, wasn't as bad as people thought(unless you were in a Union). I think the worst recession is the one from the early 80's.
