Subject: 2004

Written By: joeman on 04/06/09 at 9:00 am

I think 2004 was a big change from the previous year and in ways defined the 00 era.  One most significant thing about the 04 era is the beginning of the Web 2.0, which manifested in Google Maps, Myspace, Youtube, etc....  Alot of teenage fads died out completely that year, such as nu-metal, and was replaced by emo.  Does anyone else agree that 2004 was a big year in the 00s decade?

I agree. I've always considered 2004 (and 2005) as the most '00s year of this decade.

I didn't really like 2004 though. A lot of bad stuff happened to me that year. :P But 2005 was a lot better.

For me 2004 was just an ordinary year.

2004. I barely remember it. Probably because I was getting drunk every night? The only thing about 2004 that stands out to me is the birth of my little niece Chloe. I can't believe she starts kindergarten in August.

I think most people feel that ?4 and ?5 are when whatever decade is at it's peak because those are the 2 years that are the heart of each decade.

?0 ?1 ?2 ?2 ?4 ?5 ?6 ?7 ?8 ?9
4 and 5 are smack dab in the middle.

Usually ?3 and ?6 are also good times for each decade when its at a high peak as well.

I don't know what year is "the most 00's" to me. This was, and is such a broad decade it's hard to find 2 years that sum it up the most because there are so many different things during different times.

Pretty much every election year has a change in pop culture.

1996-2000:  Rise of the internet, teen pop, boy bands, pre-emo music like Third Eye Blind, etc.
2000-2004:  Nu-metal, rise of reality TV, War on Terror, American Idol, pop-punk, rap sounding still 20th century
2004-2008:  Text messaging, ringtone rap, crunk, emo, Google, MySpace, epic dramas on TV like CSI and Lost, the OC, the Hills
2008-2012:  Autotune, Lady Gaga, being "green", more hippy bright color fashion, 1990s retro slightly, iPhone and apps

I don't see how rap sounded "20th century" in 2000 or the 3 following years. Sounded pretty "21st century" to me.

The crunk 21st century sound did exist in 2000 with DMX and all these people, but I still see mostly traces of the 20th Century in rap in 2000 til about 2004.  In 2004, we have this 21st century rap with Lil Jon and Houston and all these people, but we had the 20th Century sound with Lil Flip with Sunshine.  That song sounds 1999ish.

Basically what I am saying...20th Century rap...nice flow, old school hip-hop beat
21st Century - Lil Jon, Soulja Boy, Twista, Chamillionaire, Ying Yang Twins, etc.

I think 2004 was pretty good.  Just a tad better than 2003, but not quite as good as 2005 which followed it.

But was 2003 more like 18 B.C. or 10 A.D. ?

Joeman, what they're saying is that the topic smacks of decadeology, a term first coined on these boards.  Anyone who engages in decadeology renders unto ChuckyG a royalty...
