Subject: New version of the Toto classic 'Africa'
Written By: whistledog on 03/08/09 at 12:18 am
Being a fan of the original, I wasn't expecting to like this cover, but I do. Karl Wolf is an R&B singer, Culture ia a rap artist. Both hail from Canada, and this is their version of the 1983 hit 'Africa' by Toto

It's currently at #2 in Canada, and I think it could become a hit in the US as well. It's apparently already a top 20 hit in Japan

Maybe for his next record he can do another continent, by remaking Europe's bombastic hit "The Final Countdown". ;)

There is nothing wrong the original so why cover it?

Cause this is the 21st Century. Everyone does remakes cause no one can come up with anything original :D

Does this mean the art of songwriting is dying out?

Not totally. Artists like Robin Thicke, Daniel Powter, James Blunt, etc still remain popular in a world where covers and samples seem to be the majority

True, but James Blunt?

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become
That's some awkward phraseology, but otherwise it's a fine song. It's a song crafted well enough that other artists CAN cover it.

Don't forget the old-timey supergroup Asia, Bjork's "Oceania", or "America" by Razorlight!

No need for a poll on this thread?

As well, Men at Work's masterpiece oeuvre, "Down Under" about their native Australia! :)

I agree. I guess the same reason why we are stuck with the same lame-arsed movies that are based on lame-arsed TV shows from 20 years ago.
Ugh, I am watching this video as I write, and wish I had put in a pair of earplugs first. This is absolute crap. I would rather watch Charlie's Angels: Full Throtle then listen to this again.
For those that want to know what real music is like, just ignore that and tune into the original:
