I heard the two clips on the radio and I feel Joe Satriani is on to a winner here.

Interesting. Cold Play seems to be an alright band but I would never imagine them stealing material from Satch. I don't think it is uncommon though, as a lot of artists, especially hip-hop music, steal samples off melodies and use them for their own.

On the radio they played both clips separately and together. Separately, they sound exactly alike.
When playing the clips together, it sounded great!! A guitar solo over Chris' lyrics sounded awesome!! I would love to find an actual mix that way - which may surface in time.

as a musician, 2 people can come up with the same melody, same Idea for a song and not know it.
I used to be in a band, thats where my username comes from, I was in a band called Holic.
Before that, I used to write songs, and I remember one specific song I wrote in the mid 90's that a alternate rock band released as a single in the late 90's that sounded exactly the same with similar lyrical patterns and similar theme song.
I didnt consider suing the band as I had no proof of the songs authenticity and of course no proof of the time I wrote it.
It does happen and it couldve been pure coincidence that Satriani and Colplay have a song that sounds exactly the same.

No one better make any jokes about Coldplay, because
1. They're a great band
2. They have a buttload of hits
3. They might steal the jokes your make about them
In all seriousness, Satch should win.

Unfortunately, there really is no such thing as an original idea. Pretty much universally.
