Subject: The next big film flop of 2008....

Australia.
It bombed at the box office.... big time.
Earning only $20 million, in it's first week alone.

I suspect it will be a success in Australia, but maybe not earn enough to make back what it cost to make :(

Wow ! This comes as a SURPRISE to me ! I WAS aware of mixed reviews, from film critics .... and have had only partial interest in it, even though it features a virtual 'who's who' of fine well known Australian actors, from various generations. I don't get to the movies much ... but will probably STILL check it out, for my own info ?
I know that Oprah Winfrey ..... devoted a whole show to this, with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman present. She and her audience ... waxed lyrical over the movie. Seems EVEN somebody of HER mega-influence .... cannot sway everything. :-X
By the way .... if you wanna see a really EXCELLENT movie set in Australia, check out the 1971 film 'Walkabout' ...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Walkabout-Jenny-Agutter/dp/B00004YA8Z/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1228111745&sr=8-2
It features legendary Aboriginal actor .... David Gulpilil ... who also appears in 'Australia' .
Just LOOK at those reviews at Amazon. If they don't convince you ... :-X

That was a great Aussie film with a very cute, young Jenny Agutter... ::)

She was barely 16 ... so ... only JUST legal .... from a 'carnal knowledge' type legal perspective (depending on which country you're in ).

Before anybody tries to beat me up ..... for being a 'pervert' ..... I should add, that at the time I FIRST viewed it ... in the 70's .... I MAY have been as young as 18 ..... so, it was hardly un-natural, for my eyes to pop out at certain scenes.
Now, I'm just a dirty old man !

Yes ... the other place where this happens, .... a scene where she removes her shirt, etc .... to do some washing, and is startled by our Aboriginal dancing friend, who suddenly has the hots for her. When she rejects him, he hangs himself.
Funny how this 'freezing' even occurs with the copy to my hard drive. Must be a bug in the movie ?

Nicole Kidman is the kiss of death......
She is for me. I can't stand her and tend to avoid anything she is in....unless I hear she dies a horrible death in the movie, then I might consider going. :D

Hmm ..... I do seem to recall several movies I've seen her in, that I actually thought she was a competent actress. Not one of the all time greats, but ok.
The first one ... brought her some fame ... something about being on a yacht with people disappearing ?
She ended up half naked.
I suspect she's had some cosmetic help since .... in that department ? :-X

You mean Dead Calm, with Sam Neill and Billy Zane?
Kidman's first film, by the way.

First American film. She'd been in many Aussie films previous. One titled 'BMX Bandits' comes to mind, which I never saw lol

She seems better when there's some action/drama in the film. Her enhanced lips now put me off....
Dead Calm may well have been her best film...

I seem to recall she was passable /good in some action film ... think it was called 'The Interpreter' ... or the like ?
I think hooking up with Cruise certainly opened a lot of doors for her ?

'The Interpreter' put me to sleep lol
Her best role to me was a dramatic film titled 'The Hours', the story of three women of different times and generations whose lives are all seemingly connected. She had on all this makeup to make her look age old, and you really wouldn't know it was her at quick glance

I'm not sure if I've seen that one. Sounds intriguing. Maybe next time it's on tv ?
