Subject: This should make you respect the music industry less

Written By: ChuckyG on 09/19/08 at 6:27 pm

if that were possible:

In the e-mail, Kluger (who has represented Mariah Carey, New Kids on the Blog, Ne-Yo, Fall Out Boy, Method Man, Lady GaGa and Ludacris) explained via e-mail that for the right price, Double Happiness Jeans could find its way into the lyrics in an upcoming Pussycat Dolls song. Crouse posted the e-mail on his blog at the Anti-Advertising Agency, an art project of sorts that's basically the philosophical mirror image of a traditional ad agency.

here's a list from amIright of product mentions.. no idea which were paid for:

I suppose it was just a matter of time.

It's probably always been that way. Music industry, like all industries, are evil by nature.

Payola was small potatoes compared to the successful blending of commercial products with entertainment.  Advertising will sneak in wherever it possibly can!

Well not everybody has sold out.  A few years ago, the makers of Preparation-H 'roid creme wanted to use the Johnny Cash song, "Ring of Fire" for its ads.  But the Cash estate refused.

I always thought that the Bangles' "Eternal Flame" would make a great 'roid creme or yeast infection commercial jingle.

Sex.  Technology.  Excitement.  Records.  Films.  Products.  Real estate and video games.

Sigue Sigue Sputnik provide all this, and more.  Let Sputnik World Enterprises handle your ultimate fantasy.  For further information, contact the Sputnik Corporation.  Pleasure is our business.

-- Sigue Sigue Sputnik, from Flaunt It, 1986

("This digital recording is brought to you courtesy of EMI records, the world's greatest music company.  So great, one day, we'll buy the company...")

The Sex Pistols started it a few years before, but nobody did product placement better (as in, with more bitterly ironic commentary) than Sigue Sigue Sputnik.  Chalk up any losses to the great rock and roll swindle...

The Beatles fought to keep their music out of the commercial advertising arena.  There was a commercial that played the piano piece from "In My Life" I think it was Alka Seltzer, and that stopped quickly, but Tokyo Rose let Nike, of all lowlife bottom feeding companies, use "Instant Karma", something that would have caused John to weep.

Music industry isn't any different than any other industry.  There is much more, much worse.
