Subject: Lady GaGa
Written By: whistledog on 09/11/08 at 10:09 pm
Lady GaGa (born: Stefani Germanotta) is an American electronic/dance pop artist who took her stage name from the Queen song 'Radio Ga Ga'.
In what to me seems rather unusual, her greatest success so far appears to be in Canada where her debut single 'Just Dance' dethroned the seemingly unstoppable Katy Perry to secure the current #1. Here's some charts (so far) ...
2008 - Just Dance <w/ Colby O'Donis>
2008 - Poker Face
2008 - LoveGame
2008 - Big Girl Now <with New Kids on the Block>
2008 - The Fame
2008 - Christmas Tree
2009 - Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)
2009 - Paparazzi
2009 - Beautiful Dirty Rich

What I am curious about is why Lady GaGa has not caught on in the States?
'Just Dance' is seemingly a Top 40 hit everywhere but the US and the UK. It is so far unreleased in the UK, but I can almost predict a Top 40 placing when it gets released in December
'Poker Face' recently hit the Australian and NZ Top 40, making it apparently the only countries where she has secured a 2nd Top 40 single

I still wanna know why her music isn't taking off in the States or the UK?

I agree with that. The only station I've heard Lady GaGa on here is Energy-FM Phoenix, and sadly enough they're apparently shutting down today. :(
The Top 40 stations here play mostly hip-hop. ::)

'Poker Face' is now the new #1 single in Canada. I will need to do some research on this, but I do believe this makes Lady GaGa the first ever female artist to top the chart in Canada with her first two single releases
'Poker Face' initially first entered the Canadian Chart at #41 and fell down the chart almost dropping out of the chart completely until major radio/video play pushed the song quickly back up the chart into the Top 40. I never thought it was going to hit #1, but I am glad it did. My favourite track on the album by far 8)

I quite like her new song 'Just Dance' and it entered the UK charts at #3 yesterday. When I saw Lady GaGa in the video, I thought she looked liked Christina Aguilera. I also had a look at her real name but I don't know if her first name is pronounced 'Stephanie' or if it is pronounced as in Gwen Stefani.

So it appears that 'Just Dance' has finally caught on internationally. This may cause confusion for many to whether it is a 2008 or a 2009 song. Canada and Australia made it a #1 hit in 2008. The USA and UK made it a #1 hit in 2009

LoveGame has risen to #2 in Canada. This could very well become her 3rd #1 hit in Canada. If it does, it won't be consecutive #1 hits, so no record setting for her.

Lady Gaga lives for fame
People News
May 24, 2009, 4:01 GMT
Lady Gaga would "die" if she wasn't famous.
The 'Poker Face' singer - who is well known for her eccentric clothing and party lifestyle - can't stand the thought of life away from the public eye and wouldn't be able to cope with normal life.
She said: "There are times when it can be a lot to deal with but always when I get up in the morning I try to find that very joyful place that reminds me that I would die if someone took it all away. If someone did that I wouldn't be a person any more."
After years of singing in clubs and penning tracks for stars including Britney Spears, the 23-year-old beauty - who topped the UK charts with her debut album 'The Fame' - is grateful of her newfound success.
She explained: "I have such an appreciation for where I am in my life because I've struggled and because I couldn't get signed, and because I couldn't get played on the radio."
But the eccentric star, who went to the elite Convent of the Sacred Heart School with Paris and Nicky Hilton
, relishes the opportunity to be herself.
She said: "Right now the only thing that I am concerned with in my life is being an artist. I had to suppress it for so many years in high school because I was made fun of but now I'm completely insulated in my box of insanity and I can do whatever I like."

Saw a pic of Lady GaGa's Rolling Stone cover, which features her covered in bubbles and has a retro '70's vibe...
While her hair still needs improvement (well, atleast it's not her trademark bangs) and the background is too pink, she definately has great curves on the picture.
(won't paste since I don't think the pic is appropriate to post)

Say, has anyone noticed all the sexual innuendo contained in her lyrics? There's the double entendre of "Poker Face," and there's also the line about "bluffin' with my muffin." And in "LoveGame," with that line "I wanna take a ride on your disco stick," it ought to be pretty obvious what "disco-stick" is a symbol of. ::)

Lady GaGa's "Paparazzi"... or "November Rain" on acid
Review... the music video is also posted on the ^ link
Review: Lady GaGa's new video for 'Paparazzi'
Posted by Melinda Newman
Lady GaGa is going for her third straight hit. Will "Paparrazzi" hit it?
Credit: Lady GaGa
Lady GaGa and her disco stick didn't hang around for very long: Her label has already released a new video for the next single, "Paparazzi" and is seemingly letting go of "Love Game."
The"Love Game" video, as dissected by fellow Hitfix scribe Katie Hasty and me here is a fairly boring video. The same can definitely not be said of the clip for "Paparazzi" which is leaps and bounds above and beyond any of LG's previous videos (plus, as boring as the verses are, the chorus is pretty darn catchy). Here, we have a deluxe 7:45 minute mini-movie with opening and closing credits. Directed by Jonas Akerlund, the video opens with Lady GaGa making love to her boyfriend in a gorgeous seaside mansion. She's at the top of the world: she's even mastered speaking in Swedish (we think that's what that is. There's subtitles and all). Her fame has become so great that she appears on U.S. currency-in the United States of Lady GaGa. But fame is a bitter pill as her boyfriend tries to get her to cooperate with paparazzi shots of their having sex.
She ultimately falls off their balcony and the paparazzi still manage to get their photos, but Lady GaGa's in a compromising position of a different sort: broken and battered on the ground, with the tabloids declaring her career, like her twisted body, damaged beyond repair.
But our gal's nothing if not plucky. And she prepares for her comeback-- color- coordinated neck brace, wheelchair and all-- in what is the masterstroke of the video. Her rehab scenes are deliciously perverse, complete with her learning to walk again in a metal leotard that matches her crutches. Interspersed with her "Thriller"-like dance moves, are weird flashes of suicidal and homicidal mannequins, all getting snapped by the paps. It's gruesome fun.
In almost every one of her videos, she's making out with someone and this time Lady GaGa returns to her semi-orgy, kissing and licking three or four boys and girls on the sofa. There is nothing the least bit titillating or tantalizing about it and I can't tell if that's on purpose or that Lady GaGa is so purposefully robotic and mannered that R2D2 seems hot by comparison.
Of course, Lady GaGa triumphs-it is her video, after all. Not only does she learn to walk again, she exacts revenge on her wretched boyfriend by killing him. And this time, the paparazzi are shooting his broken body. Just as he originally planned to step over her body on his rise to the top, she gleefully gets to dance her way over his all the way into the police car--shades of "Sunset Blvd"-as the papers declare that Lady GaGa is back on top.
The whole thing is about as subtle as a sledgehammer: once you get famous, everyone wants to use you for something and the press may love you when you're up, but they love you even more when you're down.
Yes, Lady GaGa is now a star, but I'm not so sure she's a big as she thinks she is. Two radio hits and lots of tabloid press don't make you a household name. She is very famous in with a certain segment of fans, but she's hardly ubiquitous and there's something a little upsetting-even if it's all in service of a good video plot device-about an artist no one knew about 12 months ago releasing a video that spans that arc more of a 12-year career than a 12-month one. If she feels this burnt out and cynical about it all in these still very-early days of her career, she's going to have a tough time in the years ahead. But maybe we're reading too much into it all.
It's a fabulous-looking video that must have cost upwards of $1 million (does Lady GaGa know that half of that is recoupable?) and boasts the kind of production you don't really see in anymore in music videos. But it just seems a little early in her career to be making such grand statements....almost as if she better make them now, just in case she doesn't get another chance.

The "disco stick" is a reference to one of those USB memory sticks that you can store music MP3's on.
One of Lady's male dancer friends had this awesome disco collection one one of those sticks, and that is what she is singing about... DISCO.

Hy! I'm late in the conversation but...
I love the music, I love the re-mixes. I really really love the weird. It sets her apart from the everyday disco makers. I'm a big fan of avant garde and spectacle and she does both. her performance was not just creative, but sung well. There is a good creative team at work behind her and I hope it gives us something new for a long time....please, please don't get predictable, GAGA.

Interesting doesn't even begin to describe it.
This thread's been around for awhile and I don't think I ever shared my thoughts on Lady Gaga. I'm not her biggest fan or anything, but she's cool. Her style of music is a change from what we've heard over the last years, and she's very quirky which i always admire in celebrities. The only song of hers I really like is Poker Face.

I've still only heard the one song by her, Poker Face. I'm not exactly seeking out her music. Poker Face gets stuck in my head on occasion enough as it is. I do like that she's kind of an oddball though.
She was the answer to one of my trivia questions the other night (which I missed) (they said her real name Stefani something-or-other) and asked who was it? Gah! I'd forgotten completely about her.

Paparazzi is one of my favorite songs, along with another song that's bringing back good dance music, 'She Wolf' .
I don't care about any rumors regarding her or her genitals. I would also hit that, whistledog, I'm right there with you.
And as for her VMA performance, I love the way she switched up the melody. I still prefer the recording, but she has an amazing live-performance voice, which isn't too common anymore. .

I don;t know if Gaga has actually done the deed with a woman though. An interview which I read sort of left it open as to whether or not she's gone all the way with a lady yet. She may have made that statement as part of her "persona".

I know this may be off topic, somewhat, but I think fans of Lady Gaga will enjoy 'She Wolf', by Shakira. Her dancing in the video for it is semi-ridiculous, but I think it's a good song, and a great music style change, compared to the old Shakira, IMHO.

2009 Paparazzi is now #1 and LoveGame made top 5 in the US since this post http://tunecaster.com/artists/l/lady-gaga.html

As a douchebag Indie Rocker who despises the corporate Music Industry, I have to say I really like Lady Gaga, for two reasons.
- Her work with Gay Rights and her speeches. I'm not ready to call her MLK yet, but it's nice to have a star who actually stands for something. And she might make a Beatles-esque transition from "I Wanna Hold Your Hand"-esque shallow pop songs to more interesting fare.
- She's made it alright for mainstream girls to be weird again. Even the kids from my recently departed high school who are the last remnants of the emo subculture really enjoy her, so I think she has crossover appeal that many of the other mainstream pop and music stars do not have. It's great to have individuality being enforced.

I could see people forming that opinion of her, since the whole Lady Gaga persona is waaaaaaaaaaaaay over the top. :o
That said, I have listened to some of her performances and there is no doubt in my mind that she has a fantastic, superb singing voice. And her songwriting and self-marketing skills are simply off the hook.
I suspect that album #3 or album #4 will do a stripped-down production that showcases her voice without all the electronic stuff, which will be uber cool. 8)

OBAMA 2008 - MCCAIN IS 95% BUSH, OBAMA IS CHANGE
Boy, I bet you were disappointed to find out that Obama is a complete failure. Not to mention he's pretty much a carbon copy of Bush. He tripled the amount of spending in just 1 year that Bush did in 8 years (You know, that reason every liberal hates Bush so much for, all that spending, yet you don't hear a peep out of them now that Obama has tripled it?)
Oh, and Obama signed a bill to continue the "Patriot Act" (Which is another thing liberals hated Bush for)
And of course Obama continuing the War overseas....you know, because everyone hated Bush for us going to war.....but somehow it's perfectly okay when Obama does it.
Learn something about politics before you start stumping for candidates. Obama is Bad Change, not Good Change.
Maybe if Obama would have been more like Bill Clinton (A Center/Right Democrat), we would be doing just fine right now. Instead, we're stuck with a Communist.

Yeh, she's probably one of the most talented people of the 00s. In the 20s, when I'm middle-aged, I can tell she'll still be popular.

After traveling nearly 1,000 miles round-trip to see her in concert a couple months ago at Perdue University (and having her postpone the concert for a week after we'd got all the way out there), it was just announced that she is opening the new stadium in our hometown in September. lol It won't be such a disappointment if she'd cancel this time since we'd only have driven 5 miles. :D

2009 - Beautiful Dirty Rich
blame VCanada!LOL

I made a remix of Lady Gaga's song 'Lovegame', figured I'd post it here to see what everyone thinks about it.

Bad news for Lady GaGa...she's getting sued for 30 million by the guy that first discovered her...Rob Fusari.
Rob Fusari made Lady GaGa's name "Lady GaGa", co-wrote "Papparazi", and "Disco Heaven". and polished her songwriting skills.
My opinion on the whole thing:
Rob Fusari is just mad he has nothing to do with Lady GaGa's career anymore. He probably deserves some money for his co-writing those 2 songs though. Just two months ago in my New Jersey State paper(The Newark Star Ledger) Rob Fusari made like he was happy for Lady GaGa's success and didn;t mind he wasn;t in her career anymore. I could see suing for like a million dollars maybe but 30 miliion is Lady GaGa really worth that much? I mean it said in the article that Rob was suing 2 companies that Lady GaGa owns.
BTW, the whole persona of Lady GaGa was made in a Parsippany, NJ recording studio with Rob Fusari. At first Rob was looking for girls that would be in all female band(a female band version of the band "The Strokes".) Rob discovered that Lady GaGa had talent and convinced her to put dance beats in her songs. A girl who Rob knew from a New York City Club called him and reffered Lady GaGa to Rob.
Rob Fusari also has producer credits for "Wild Wild West" by Will Smith and Bootlycious by Destiny Child.
Lets see how long the lawsuit lasts or its just settled.

Her latest single 'Alejandro' has entered the Canadian Chart at #78, giving her a 14th hit in Canada
14 hits. 14 !?!?!?!?! :o :o :o
(though only 6 of those are Top 40)
Currently, she is at 9 hits (6 Top 40) in America, 11 (9 Top 40) in Australia and 14 (7 Top 40) in the UK

Somebody made a Happy birthday Gaga video on youtube with just a sampling of her fans. It was pretty amazing seeing all the different people wishing her well.
I, personally, like alot of the Gaga parody videos that have been popping up on youtube. Some are really well done.

I haven't been on the boards for a while and would normally say that I can't believe we're still discussing lady Gaga - however, as it's her I can definitely still see why this post is alive and well many months down the line!
Talking of youtube I found a great video of 101 clips of people singing 'Bad Romance - it's worth checking out...
