Subject: Close-minded

Written By: 80sfan on 08/17/08 at 7:28 pm

Just as close-minded as fans of pop music.

Are some rock fans biased against pop music?

Let me give you an example: Some people just like the Travis version of ...Baby One More Time because it's not pop. Though I'm not a fan of Britney Spears, I like her version better! I will admit that most pop songs are so saturated for a bunch of 13-year-olds that it isn't even funny. But that doesn't mean I dislike all of them! I actually like some pop songs. A rock music fan who doesn't like pop 'just because it's pop', isn't that just as close-minded as someone who just listens to Backstreet Boys and Christina Aguilera and hates everything else? I like to look at many sides to a situation, not just from my side, maybe I'm being too objective?

Backstreet Boys and Christina Aguilera
& Rap could all fall off the planet & I'd never miss them!!.I listen to alernative/pop/new wave & punk/rock
But I was never an MTV/Much fan as they were the ones who set the public demand for "What You Have to Listen to"type music...Music is like opinion.Everyone has their own!& what I like not everyone will agree , nor I with their choices.....The VH1/MTV is a cattle drive for the undecided in life!
Why make up your own mind when someone else will do it for you!
I never cared about public opinion like Charts!
It was what mattered to me that was important!
In the end music like most things are just a distraction from every day hum drum!
Some are more hum than drum!

Great post, I've thought about stuff like that too.

One pet peeve of mine is how sometimes people are reluctant to listen to music outside of their one favorite style. I mean like heavy metal fans who don't like anything that's not headbanger...or this one really is annoying. Country fans who ONLY listen to country. Sometimes classic rock fans can be like that too, like people who practically worship Zeppelin.

There's nothing wrong with having a favorite style but I'm always thinking, geez how can you never deviate from that? Wouldn't it get boring.

I started getting into music when I was only like 4 years old (thanks especially to my hip, youngish mom - that's how I got so into '80s music!) and I think that actually made me more open minded. I didn't know about that much - basically just pop songs that were on the radio, along with some classic stuff like Beatles albums... but there was still a decent variety.

Umm, dude the Backstreet Boys DID fall off the face of the planet about 6 or 7 years ago, and they haven't been huge since like 1998. ;D

Although I do totally agree with you about being yourself and liking whatever appeals to you personally, instead of relying on something else to tell you what's cool.

I like Britney Spears and I also like Black Metal.

I couldn't care less about others being "biased" against anything that I happen to like.

I cared when I was a teenager, though.

Not anymore.

If anyone criticizes you or harasses you because of the music you like, the problem is not with the music. The problem is with that person being either immature or stupid (or both). They don't deserve your consideration.

America in general is closed-minded.  Therefore, its various segments may be closed-minded as well.  Wisdom is having an open mind!

I'm not close-minded.

I've never been into Spears or Aguilera, but I do like other pop songs.

Yeah, I agree that a lot of music fans won't give songs a chance just because they're from a genre that they don't like or isn't "cool." I admit that back in the mid-90s, when I was a teenager, I thought of myself as a hip and trendy alternative rocker and metalhead, and I turned my nose up at musical styles that I perceived as being too wimpy and sugary. I refused to listen to genres such as top 40 pop, r n' b, Eurodance, and country. For instance, if songs by people like the Real McCoy, Boyz II Men, All for One, Whitney Houston or Toni Braxton would come on the radio, I'd change the station as fast as possible. It's a shame, cause I was probably missing out on some good music.

I think people live in their own bubbles and do not venture out of what they know.  They may not give other things a chance.  Especially, kids and teens live in a bubble where they care what other people think.  If something is not cool in their little circle then they shun it.  I think everyone has done it at one point in their lives.    We all have different preferences as well.

Yeah, that was half true with me. I always liked whatever appealed to me (I'm generally a pop listener, with some ballads and rock), but there were times I was reluctant to admit I liked certain things, just because I wanted to come across as "cooler" to some people.

I wasn't that popular in high school and didn't have very good self-esteem, so smaller things like that affected me more. Like if some kid called 80s music "gay" or whatever, I'd get p*ssed to myself but would kinda half justify it with something like "Yeah dude I know it's pretty corny but I admit I like it." I wasn't confident enough to be like "Hey that stuff rocks, up yours!" whereas now I might. ;)

LOL. Good points.  Again, teenagers supposedly know everything.  Hence the overused adage "If I knew then what I knew now."
