Subject: The fashion and game that will define the 00s ...

Written By: josh911 on 06/17/08 at 6:13 pm

Hi everyone,

Since we are heading towords the end of this decade i was wondering what you think game and fashion will define the 00s.
Well in my opinion without a doubt the consoles that will define the 00s will be the xbox/360 and ps2/3, and the game that will define this decade in my opinion without a doubt will be Grand Theft Auto!!
And for the fashion that will define the 00s it will be without a doubt the Emo punk mixed fashion and the fat sneakers and those new shoes and jackets with squares on them and hoodies!!
:) :)
Bye :)

When did kids start wearing their jeans lower then their underware?  I think that is what I remember most about this decade, fashion-wise.

Game-wise - probably some form of Grand Theft Auto or Guitar Hero thing.  I don't think the Wii will be remembered fondly in decades to come (but I may be wrong, because I'm still stuck in retro original Nintendo era)  ;D

sadly that began in the early 1990s... this decade and the nineties are so similar for pop culture it's kind of sad.

kids wear their pants so low, they might as well just not wear any pants at all cause either way you are going to see their underwear whether you want to or not lol

I keep crossing my fingers that by the time my son is old enough to think it might be cool, the fashion is deader than bell bottoms

Sadly there's a chance it probably won't be some passing fad like those butt crack jeans from a few years ago or those jeans that look like bikini bottoms :(

No the saggy jeans are like a 1994-2002 fashion although you won;t get made of currently for wearing your jeans like that like you would 80's fashions in the 90's.

Please, the 00's and the 90's each have a different pop culture and I went to High School from 1994-1998 so I should know. The 90's never heard that "decade of excess attitude" like the 00's have or had(2003-early 2007.) I just leave it at that for now.

Funny you mention that, I always saw the 00s (2003-07 at least) as an utterly failed attempt at bringing back the 80s, except with a much crappier economy.

No, The economy was not crappy this decade(until this year) so i"ll have to disagree with you there. I agree with you though the 00's does have that 80's mentality of the decade of excess(2003-early 2007.)

I think the fashion fads that will stick out most are the dominance of metallics (silvers, golds, bronzes) in the form of many purses, shoes, and clothes. Also, designer purses such as Dooney & Burke, Coach and various others will define the decade along with how huge some of them were.

Those shoes and Hoodies with the checkered squares are not new to this decade. Those were fashionable in the early-late '80s. I even wore those flat bottommed shoes with checkers on them back them. Maybe I can find an old picture showing them.

Here you go, from the soundtrack of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" 1982 -

Games, I guess it would have to be the X-BOX and Nintendo Wii. Playstations were already out prior to 2 and 3, so I wouldn't say those would count.

True the economy was good around 2004, and the housing market was at its peak from 2004-06, but the economy probably was not as good as the late 90s tech boom, which is where the excess of the 2000s started gestating.

Although if you think about it, this year with the bad economy, next year you might see a similar scenario that happened after the 1987 stock market crash in that when the late 80s early 90s recession started, it in effect started the next decade. 1988 was still the last hurrah of 80s culture, but by 1989 things had pretty much given away to the 90s culture and there was a different feel. (Seinfeld and the Simpsons debuted this year, though nowhere near their breakout of popularity)

The 2000s are actually following in the 80s footsteps pretty accurately, considering how 20 year nostalgia cycles work. If the 90s were like a modern 70s (the 20 year cycle was for the 70s then) then the 2000s are like a modern 80s, with rap of course.  ::)

I'm 19 and I admit I'm one of those white kids that wears my hat sideways and wears my pants low.  I've been dressing like that for a few years.  My girlfriend's parents hate me because of the way I dress, and because I smoke, but mostly because the way I dress.  Alot of older people hate the way I dress, but once they talk to me they will find out I'm a very nice kid.  I never intended to offend anyone with my low pants, its just the style, and even though I do it I admit its stupid.

Thanks for explaining it to me.  All it is is style.  I guess I was always confused about why it would be popular.

But then I'm also from an area that it gets really cold in the winter and I can't imagine freezing my heiney for style either.
Thanks for the good answer.  :)

Hey...I posted this last week.  We'll a few days ago my girlfriend told me wearing my pants low was stupid and she wants me to stop doing that, so as of yesterday I don't wear them low anymore.  So one less teen with low pants.  I will keep wearing my hat backwards/to the side, even if my girlfriend asks me to change, I just like wearing it like that so much  .  So maybe the low pants thing might be going out of style.

It's to soon to say for what the 00's will be remembered in the next decades, but there's something sure : the 00's nostalgia will occur during the 2020's , when southern rap, converses, the pussycat dolls and the Sims will be cool again !

The nostalgia cycle has nothing to do with economic cycles. The 1950's (economic growth + conservatism) and the 1970's (economic stagnation + liberalism) , or The 1970's and the 1990's (economic growth + liberalism) had nothing in common economically. I'm affraid the situation is worse in most western countries, (mostly because of skyrocketing gas prices) it might not be the last economic downturn in the 5 years to come, and it will be like that until we start to get rid of our dependance from oil.  Also, The 2000's can maybe be considered a "modern 80's" in pop-cultural terms, but it's not as greedy as the 1980's, or even as the internet bubble period : 1998-2000.

I agree that this decade bears a resemblance to the 80's in terms of pop culture. In the 80's the new frontier was MTV, now we have the internet. In the 80's a lot of popular music was very dance oriented (in the 90's a lot was too, but not the extent that it was then or now), probably because of the lasting effects of disco; now a lot of music is very dance oriented because of the lasting effects of the '99-'01 teen pop and bling rap. The late 80's saw the rise of hairmetal, a form of pop-rock that was more based off the image than the music, where every band followed the same formula, and mainly attracted younger women; now, in the late 00's, we have pop-emo, which seems to follow the same routine hairmetal did (it seems 'Hey Delilah' is the modern version of 'Every Rose has its Thorn'). There is obviously a strong sense of "style over substance" in music today, which was present in the 80's (even if many of the songs then were far better). But I agree that greed in the 80's was far worse than it is today (hence films like 'Wallstreet'); the problem today is the growing corporatism.

As for what this decade will be remembered for? I'd say Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Super Smash Bros., Metal Gear Solid, even Silent Hill are all good candidates for being the game series of the decade (as for individual game, either GTAIV, MGS4, or Halo 3). Fashion? I'm not the best person to ask  ::)

Thats a good point actually. I wasn't so much saying that pop culture only depends on economic cycles. I think to some extent they can either mark a beginning or end to an era, but I agree, economic factors play in with many other more minute ones, all of which cumulitively add up to changing pop culture as a whole. You make a good point about the tech bubble burst ending the late 90s boom period. And considering where we are now in the 00s, its more of a modern 80s, war ridden, Bush/Cheney purgatory kind of a feel. ;D

This is why decadeology is usually never relevant. You can't make statements like "the 90s really started in 1991 with the Gulf War and Grunge." Because what about what came before that?  Reagan leaving office ended the 80s symbolically, and the 87' stock market crash pretty much ended the boom period, and probably the incentive for greed as well. But there's so many other factors that contribute to an era "ending", some of which take years to manifest themselves. You could use the examples of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Simpsons and Seinfeld both debuting in 89' as also slowly changing pop culture from an 80s to a more 90s feel.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is, an era doesn't end until the calender strikes January 1st of the next decade.  There are usually other factors well in place that manifest themselves into changing pop culture by that time as well. :)

If I had to pick one game to define the '00s (so far), I would probably make it Grand Theft Auto III. That game single handedly changed the gaming landscape of this decade back in 2001, because after that you have had alot of new games moving in the "sandbox game" direction. That's still the case today though.

I do like GTAIII, but I was never a huge fan...it's not nearly as good as San Andreas or IV, and even when it came out I didn't think it was anything to write home about (same with Vice City). Do you think any game that came out this decade had a huge impact thogh? I mean as you said, GTAIII did alter things a bit, but it certainly wasn't a huge change, and the same can be said about Halo. To me, the 90's had quite a few games that were far more revolutionary (from Ocarina of Time to Goldeneye to Super Mario 64 to Doom to even Resident Evil), as did the 80's (Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros., Tetris) and 70's (well, video games pretty much began then  :)). What's revolutionary this decade isn't so much the games themselves as it is the format - from HD to motion censors to Blu-ray, things are A LOT more advanced. Actually, I'd say the most revolutionary game this decade would probably be 2000's Perfect Dark for the N64. That game had the most advanced graphics of its time, was the first game to use counter-op, had far more weapons than any game before, and was the first game to have a multiplayer that even resembles modern FPS's (it was the first to have multiplayer challenges and took advantage of multitudes of modes, simulants, arenas, and weapons). I'd say ithat game put the genre on top and kinda paved the way for games like Halo and Call of Duty.

All good points. The '90s were an extremely revolutionary time in video games, probably the most changeful decade ever, with home consoles making the switch from 2D to 3D. I mean, in 1990 the most popular game around was Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES, and by 2000 the Playstation 2 had launched. That's alot of changes for a 10 year period.

I do agree that there haven't been any major milestones in video games this decade as in past decades (the '70s introduced games to the masses, the '80s saw games revitalized after the 1983 crash, and the '90s had the 2D to 3D transition). The motion sensing capabilities of the PS3 and Wii could potentially be seen as important innovations if that type of thing takes off in the future, but other than that most of the bigger changes to games have been better looking graphics.

As far as GTA III, I loved it when it first came out, but yeah, it hasn't aged very well. ;)

You make a good point here, but I think if music is very dance oriented these days, it's also because of the general feeling of uncertainty and high level of anxiety concerning the future in both economical and geopolitical terms. (in western countries, not much in India or China where it is the opposite). In these types of "eras" , (like the 1970's and in a smaller extent the 1980's) we feel the need to be highly entertained.I don't think depressing music , slow jams, dark clothes, and over romantic movies from the 1990's would sell much during our decade !
