Shock value?  Guess you've never heard any of Melissa Etheridge's stuff.  Songs about lesbianism have been around for a few decades.

Yeah the song is stirring up some controrverey. I agree with "Marty" in that the song has that 80's drum snare element to it. She has an "Alanis Morisette" vibe to her voice as well. Its one of the best songs of the year so far I think.

^ All due respect intended, but you don't have to live a certain lifestyle to appreciate a song (that one is just really catchy and it's the main reason I like it).

I try not to take stuff like that too seriously. There's lots of songs where I disapprove of the lyrics in a personal sense (for example, alot of rock songs are actually pretty sexist if you think about it), or I might not agree with the singer or the bands' lifestyles, but I'm not gonna let that stop me from liking a song itself.

Don't get me wrong, there ARE songs where I identify with the lyrics....but I usually like music for the way it sounds.

Pretty terrible song, but I guess it's catchy and empowering in a weird way.

I find the whole fake bisexual/lesbian thing, if you're aren't really bi, just silly and at least largely driven by males. Assuming she has no other Top 40 hits, then it could very well be.  She had a follow-up single titled 'Hot and Cold' that charted in the US and Canada, but failed ot make the Top 40

I really hope she's not a one-hit wonder because alot of the other songs on there are really good too, and show off her tomboy, sorta "tough girl" vibe. "One of the Boys", "If You Can Afford Me" (that one's really catchy) and "Self Inflicted" are my favorites. They have sort of a loud '80s pop feel to them with a modern edginess.

She actually has a good versatile voice...so given the right material she should be around often enough.

Was just on the radio. 6 weeks at number 1 so far in the US, 2nd longest run of the year to "Low".

"Low" had 8 weeks at the Top in Canada, which ties "I Kissed A Girl".  The Madonna/JT song "4 Minutes" had a 9 week at #1, but those weren't consecutive weeks; It was interrupted for 1 week by "Take A Bow" by Rihanna

That song got old fast. Though I can't say I dislike the subject matter  ::), the song is just too simple and unoriginal to really have longevity. I do like the emphasis on the snare though, kind of an 80's throwback which is usually never a bad thing...at least when you compare the 80's to the 00's.

I've heard this song lots of times already and it's getting a lot of airplay on BBC Radio 1. Some of the lyrics are unusual but the song is still catchy. This morning Chris Moyles played it on his breakfast show and he thought Katy was singing, "Taste of her cherry chopsticks," instead of, "Taste of her Cherry Chapstick." I also saw some of the video on TMF yesterday.

I heard the song in my Spinning Class on Monday evening and as soon as I recognised it, I burst out laughing because I thought it was an unusual choice of song for my class. I have also seen the whole video now.

There's no doubt about that, but as Marty said, any song that gets that much airplay is going to get annoying. I thought it was good at first (there's no denying how catchy this thing is), but for me it just got old really quick. But yeah, I'd rather see another 'I Kissed a Girl' then another 'Low' any day.

Well I don't think that's why most people (myself included) enjoy her music. I totally agree that it's something Melissa Etheridge could've sung about in 1994...but I think it's a great song because of how insanely catchy it is. It's like pop/rock and club style dance music thrown together.

I think it's just that Gaga's songs are better. But each to his own.

The media was starting to peg Katy as fading in popularity when 'Think of You' just barely broke the US Top 30, but that means nothing at all.  Hits are hits despite their chart placing. 

Her new single 'Waking Up in Vegas' is already in the US Top 10 and had it not been for the Black Eyed Peas ('Boom Boom Pow'), it would have given her a 3rd #1 in Canada.  Oh well, it's the #1 hits that get overplayed lol

It sounds 1960s to me...the 1960s swing beat with the 1960s style riffs...it sounds like a pep band melody at a football game.

I think I've changed my mind again, "Waking Up in Vegas" is my favorite Katy single and maybe from the whole cd. Not only does it sound the most 80s of all of them (I could see Benatar or Patty Smyth singing it), it's got the best melody and I love the video too.

I Kissed a Girl was like her breakout novelty song, Hot N Cold was the huge single, both were edgier and upbeat.  Thinking of You kinda bombed as the ballad (I liked it though, she looked beautiful in the WWII video as well), and Vegas is like middle tempo.
