This is absolutely disgusting.  What the hell is happening these days?  8 teens were arrested in connection to this.

Ugh, I caught this on the news this morning. Absolutely disgusting.

The girls are a bunch of dumbasses for putting it on YouTube. Did they honestly think they weren't going to get caught? And the charges will be adding up, because the girl lost hearing in one ear and her vision in one of her eyes.

imagine if they'd had youtube in germany in the 1930s or in rwanda in the 90s. stuff like this goes on all the time but now cats can record it and broadcast it for grins. it's pretty hideous, yeah, but i'm not sure it's new. at least i sorta hope not.

i saw this thing a couple days ago on youtube that was just horrifying -- it starts with people getting beaten with sticks and then goes on to some graphic beheadings and tied-up people being thrown from high windows to their deaths, intermixed in with a bunch of stuff from abu ghraib, from the sets of photos that are so explicit they dont get around. the guy who posted them was trying to make an anti-torture statement so i supported him posting it. sometimes i think people need to see more of this stuff, not less -- not the way these kids did it, to get attention, but to show what violence really is so we dont support it thinking that wars are bloodless or cause no suffering. (i know, i know, the teen video hasn't got anything to do with war, at least not on the face of it, but still...)

The parents of one of the teens who was involved in the beating blames the victim for saying something about her daughter.  Since when is something a kid says worthy of being beaten almost half to death by a peer?

As for putting it on youtube.  It's on there, the new media made sure that happened.  However I guess they dumbasses weren't expecting kidnapping and assault charges.

From what I saw someone actually posted a video with their names and addresses now.  I guess it's kind of a vengeance tactic.  However if they are all in jail, what's the point of posting it?  The parents of these kids are probably in danger now.

Seriously, though, I agree with Tia.  Nothing new under the sun.  I remember this crap going on in the '80s when I was in school.  Now it ends up on the Internet.  We had local cable in the '80s,  but you couldn't go up to your community cable station and say, "You got eight minutes between the school committee meeting and the hockey game, so can you show this biatch gettin' smacked around?"  Not in my town anyway.  Maybe Methuen or Lawrence would do it.  So it's more visible nowadays and perhaps more common, though I don't know if it really is.  The mentality was certainly present in the '80s but not the technology.  We only seem like we're more violent and pornographic than we were 25 years ago because everybody and his grandmother can and does upload images of themselves fighting and f**king. 

Things I've always known:
When it comes to peer-on-peer bullying, girls are more vicious than boys.  There's much more long-running vendettas and a drive to annhilate among girls.  For boys bullying is a means of establishing dominance with a little bloodsport thrown in.  I saw girls transfer to other districts because the bullying was so bad.  Even I didn't have to do that, and I was most bullied in eighth grade.  Why was I most bullied?  I was the little guy who fought back, sometimes I bolted when I was outnumbered, but I generally stood my ground. Contrary to the bully myth, if you fight back with words, spit, and fists, the bullying escalates.  How many times did I hear, "Max man, you're dead after school!" Once a week, sometimes more.  Usually the dudes wouldn't even show up.  If the worst happened, I'd just walk home with a shiner or something and blubber with rage about the ways I was gonna slowly kill all those guys.  Never did nothin' though.

Then there was this girl named Nicole who the tough girls decided should die.  They hounded her like the dogs of March track a limping doe.  It was relentless and merciless.  Eventually, she became pale and sick and shook all the time.  Nicole's pain only made those tough girls foam at the mouth.  After winter break, there was no more Nicole.  Her parents had made other arrangements for her education.  That cringing dolt of a vice principal probably told her folks the same thing he told me, "Nothing I can do about it, it's just the way kids are in the eighth grade."  It was Diane's turn next, but she was a tougher customer and lasted to the end of the year!

As mean as the boy bullies were to me, I never got the sense of deep-seeded hatred I saw with the girl bullies.  That video clip brings it to mind.

There are probably other examples of this neanderthal behavior, but I think the point is made.

I would probably send them letters laced with laxatives inside and claim that they were drugs for them to use.  ;D
