Subject: What's more annoying: post-grunge or hip hop's dominance?

Written By: Never Duplicated on 04/01/08 at 2:45 pm

I'd say hip hop is more annoying. I'm surprised how popular grunge still is, after nearly 20 years.

Hip-hop, absolutely.

Each are annoying as each other.

Probably hip hop, because it has a hold over the entire culture and influences other stuff to a point as well (i.e. slang, fashion and clothing styles, even other genres of music). Whereas post-grunge is just something that freezes mainstream rock in 1997 in a way, but you don't see millions of people imitating Nickelback (thankfully). ;D

Right now hip-hop is probably worse, the state of hip-hop right now is beyond sickening and it only gets worse. I'm someone who used to have an appreciation for some current hip-hop maybe 3 or 4 years ago, a lot of stuff wasn't really good then either compared to the classics, but the state of it now is so amazingly bad with one one hit wonder no talent rapper after another coming up (the earlier 2000s were at least dominated by more veteran type artists who had multiple hits). Real hip-hop is dead and buried now, it began to die in the late 90s and it was buried sometime in 2005 imo. I think the extreme popularity has ultimately killed hip-hop, we have ended up with a situation now where pretty much any rapper no matter how useless will get a hit. With post grunge pretty much the same thing happened, grunge became real popular, of course record labels aimed to turn that popular genre into safe pop music, and the style got more commercialized and abused, so today were left with this lifeless sludge called "post grunge" that is played in endless rotation by radio stations around the country. Maybe today's hip hop should be called "post hip-hop" because I mean Soulja Boy, Flo Rida, and T-Pain, are these clowns really REAL hip-hop artsts...  :-\\

Hip hop has been horrible since the mid 1990's and haven't changed at all. Especially the hardcore gangsta rappers like 50 Cent and Jay Z.

Not to mention it's just noise to my ear.

Post grunge, isn't it replaced with emo

This is a no brainer.  Speaking of no brainers, new hip hop artists dont have brains and cannot rap.  Recent hip hop is so boring - clubs, girls, and money.  Thats all.  Oh and Diamond Teeth.  That's attractive.

By the way, I love old hip hop from the 80's and early 90's.

Hip Hop is more annoying because it has turned into absolute crap and is still popular, not to mention its influence over other forms of music in the 00s, such as Pop and R&B (R&B is pretty much just Hip Hop with the occasional ballad now).  Perhaps I wouldn't mind the immense popularity of Hip Hop if the mainstream stuff was actually good, but that just isn't the case.

As for Post Grunge, I actually like a lot of the mid 90s Post Grunge, when it first came out and it managed to stay a halfway decent style of music into the late 90s.  However, it really needs to die now.  This year marks 14 years of Post Grunge and the style still hasn't faded away.  In fact, staying in the mainstream has resulted in the style getting worse, as all possible creativity in the genre has already been done, resulting in nothing but dumbed down Nickelback songs that all sound the same.

Post grunge, isn't it replaced with emo

From my personal experience, Post Grunge isn't that popular with the younger crowd, but it still maintains mass popularity due to all the people in their thirties listening to it.  As for Emo, it honestly is quickly becoming irrelevant.  Emo music is not as popular as it used to be and the amount of Emo kids around my area has decreased drastically from what it was in 2005 and 2006.  Not to mention the fact that most Emo kids disappear after they graduate from high school anyway.  I haven't seen a genuine Emo kid yet in college. Seriously, not one.

Seems like the style of music I call "Pop Emo" has replaced it.  Pop Emo is basically bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco (who apparently have a new single out), Paramore, and stuff like that.  Stuff that is influenced by Emo, and started out being liked by stereotypical Emo kids, has now surpassed Emo in popularity, finding a large audience with teenage girls.  I know a few people who call bands like these "boy bands with guitars" which may be fairly accurate.

Since all areas are different, I'm not sure if Emo is still popular where you guys live, but around here the scene has isn't even half as big as it was in 2005.  Heck, my mom has even mentioned that she doesn't see that many Emo kids anymore.

Yeah I would like todays hip-hop if it was actually good hip-hop but your right that is not the case.

As for Post Grunge its still around? I just thought Post-Grunge was like 1996/1997-2002 and not 2003+. I remember "Bush" and "Silverchair" were popular in 1996 and were probably the first really popular post-grunge bands. However Post Grunge was big when "Creed" was really popular from 1997-2002. I think "Seven Marry 3" was the first really pure post-grunge band when they scored a hit in late 1995/early 1996 with "Cumbersome" but that was "Seven Mary 3's" only hit.

Yeah I agree about EMO it was popular from about mid 2005-mid 2006 but that it faded out. I agree Pop-EMO has replaced EMO in popularity. Yeah but Pop-EMO was around in 2003 though with a band like "Simple Plan" and they were popular with teenage girls I believe.

Simple Plan was more like Pop Punk.  The two are easily confused these days as most Pop Punk fans became Emo and they do share some similarities.  However, they are different.  Back in 2002 and 2003, bands like Simple Plan and Good Charlotte were labelled Pop Punk by most people, as Emo hadn't existed yet.  Now, I hear people calling them Emo when, at the peak of their popularity, Emo wasn't even a word for most people.  With that said, it is true that Simple Plan is very whiny, moreso than most Emo bands.  Also, Pop Emo does bear a great deal of similarities to Pop Punk at times.

Post Grunge is still around, but its all crappy, Nickelback-esque stuff.  Post Grunge nowadays is stuff like Nickelback, Hinder, etc.  Also, Post Grunge bands Lifehouse and Matchbox Twenty both had Top 40 hits last year (although they're at least halfway decent).  Although it has died off quite a bit, Post Grunge is still around.

Isn't pop emo the only emo that was ever truly popular in the mainstream world anyway? I never heard much about emo until 2005 really nor cared about it. Always thought Good Charlotte and Simple Plan were pop punk back in the early 00s.

Post grunge is still everywhere, I know the music scene very well and it's still all over the place and it's all horrible now. Young and older people love Nickelback, Hinder, etc. It just doesn't go away.

Not exactly sure what qualified as "post-grunge" but I see bands like Nickelback or Creed mentioned.  I don't listen to much new music anymore but I would say new hip-hop is definitely more annoying.  I don't like Nickelback that much but at least they're tolerable.

Also, I guess I'm guilty of confusing "emo" "pop emo" and "pop punk."  I didn't even know what emo was when I first heard the word because I don't listen to new music.  Basically if it sounds whiny and/or depressing or just pure screaming I call it emo.  I was really disappointed with my brother, who I normally agree with on taste in music, when he said he really likes 30 Seconds to Mars, Jared Leto's band.  I'd never even heard it but just within 2 minutes of one of their songs they are more repulsive then Fall Out Boy or Simple Plan  8-P

Well, if you want to get technical, yes.  Emo's roots apparently go way back to the 80s.  Heres a site that serves as a good guide to Emo's roots.

http://www.fourfa.com/

So, in a way, you could say that Pop Emo is really "Pop Pop Emo".  However, lets face it, years from now, which Emo will people remember?  The 80s underground version or the 00s mainstream version?  Obviously the 00s incarnation, so we may as well call it Emo anyway because that is what it is known as and will always be known as.  Heck, how many people even knew that Emo existed before the 00s?  I know I didn't.

Yeah, Post-Grunge is still around, even if it's popularity has dropped off quite a bit in the last 4 or 5 years. I actually like most Post Grunge, so the answer to this question is pretty easy for me. Modern Hip-Hop is way worse.

Nickelback is at least tolerable, Soulja Boy and Jibbs are just un-listenable 8-P

I agree with you. Hip hop "culture" permeates just everything now.

I do like hip hop music to some extent, but its preeminence has become unbearable nowadays.
