Subject: Writers' Strike a Boon for Canadian TV

It looks like the gap the strike has created in US television is being filled up with programming from countries like Canada, Britain and Australia. The American rights to several Canadian series have already been bought by networks like CBS, NBC and ABC Family.

Americans, who already enjoy programmes like Degrassi, Whistler and recently Corner Gas, will soon have the pleasure of seeing shows like: Sophie, The Border, Flashpoint, and The Listener.

You know, I hope that someone buys CBC's Jpod. I'm really digging that show and I think it could do well in the States.

I didn't even know Corner Gas was seen in the States.  If there ever was a more Canadian show, Corner Gas is it ;D

I know! I was shocked when I found out. It came as a surprise. I was in Texas for a week this last autumn, and the radio was on in the car, and I heard the voice of Hank clearly. I said to myself 'no way'. But sure enough it was a commercial for Corner Gas which had started airing on TNT.

Yeah, they've been playing CG on WGN for about 6 months now, in fact Sunday will be a 6 episode marathon. I'm a regular over on the fan site ( I even won a Season 1 DVD- a Petro Canada coffee coupon included- through a contest WGN held when they premeired the show 8) :) ) and it's clear with all the new American fans that it's a big hit over hear. I think it's because Brent's portrayal of Saskatchawan resonanates more with the Midwest than pretty much anything that Hollywood or Broadway have done. He may be Canadian but he gets Midwesterners. What's cool about the fan site is that the actors will come on and answer the fans' questions. I have recieved answers from the actors who play Hank, Karen, and even Brent himself.

----

However this isn't the only Canadian content on US airways. WGN also broadcast Davinci's Inquest (think Quincy in Vancouver). But the biggest provider in Can Content in the US are Channels like the Discovery channels,We and a couple of others. Discovery Science is from what I can tell is 100% Canadian content. That's where I discovered a cool show called "Survivorman"!  :)

Yeah dude, Survivorman is pretty interesting. I caught an episode of it on that same trip to Texas strangely enough. It was on Discovery,I was in a hotel and I was listening to the guy talk and I said 'this guy is a Canadian, I'll bet my right arm on it'. I was right. If you like him, you can watch this cool interview with him on The Hour (a Canadian news show for twentysomethings).
