Subject: Predictions for 2008

Written By: EyesWideAsleep on 11/18/07 at 8:36 pm

Now that 2007 is almost in the past, what are your predictions for 2008? For music (rock and hip hop), TV (the strike?), the Internet, the elections?

Deborah Gibson will eventually release her long awaited album and make a full comeback

Even if it's not successful... who cares since the music industry/Top 40  would still be a vast cesspool

Okay I apologize if this is rude but I have to say something. Woops - look dude I'm not slamming your tastes or your personal opinions (hey you're perfectly entitled to those), but I think the reason lots of people (myself included) get fairly on your case about Debbie is because you throw in some mention of her on NON RELATED threads. You keep insisting she'll have a major mainstream comeback, and you're only kidding youself. Hell I'm sure she herself would tell you the same thing - she's probably happy living out of the spotlight and doing musicals or whatever else she's into these days.

You can still like her but please cut it down, for the love of Pete. ;D

Though she's currently judging a cheesy "Total Pop Star" talent contest.

Her song "Famous" is on her MySpace.

In 2008, I will hunt down that Gibson broad and force her to sign a contract stating that she will never make a comeback, that she will go into seclusion (possibly a nunnery somewhere in the region of France), and that she will take her rabid fans with her.

Thank you.

Woops, aren't you hearing what we're saying and stop side stepping the point. Seriously man, I'm not saying you're not entitled to like who you want, but with all due respect when people give constructive criticism you just totally avoid the point and live in your own little world. Whats worse is you trash everyone who ISN"T Debbie to the point of insanity. Like other pop artists are nothing in comparison, or saying Paula Abdul needed botox (even if I didn't like her music/wasn't a fan/didn't think she's attractive, that still had me on the floor laughing because of who it's compared to). ;D

Deb posed because she feels more confident about herself and it was done in good taste while there's more sleazier images on other magazines, music videos, tv ,etc.

She never liked the name "Debbie" as a teen, which she always prefer the name "Deborah".

Already has. Hour-long dramas and even game shows like "Deal or No Deal" have taken over. Only reality survivor will be of course the big American Idol. Oh yeah I forgot about Dancing With The Stars, well there's a few left sadly but not all those dating shows like a few years back at least.

Yeah, the music related ones will last.  The others will slowly fade out.  I can see Survivor and Amazing Race lasting, but I still can't understand why.  It's basically the same thing each season with a new cast of people

Survivor has at least substantially declined in ratings, because it's getting old and boring. Same thing every year basically.

Once the new president is in office (hopefully a Dem!), the mood of the country will change, although maybe not instantly. Like 2009 or '11 or somewhere in there, and hopefully it'll be better than what we've been stuck with since the Iraq War started.

Lol, this from someone who loves the Disney Channel and HSM?

Never liked "HSM" and don't watch Disney Channel anymore

"Suite Life" was OK, but moved on to other shows like "Sarah Silverman Program" & "Boondocks"

Already has. Hour-long dramas and even game shows like "Deal or No Deal" have taken over. Only reality survivor will be of course the big American Idol. Oh yeah I forgot about Dancing With The Stars, well there's a few left sadly but not all those dating shows like a few years back at least.
Over here at least, there is a new trend emerging:

- Downsize Me
- Downsize My Pet
- How To Look Good Naked
- Does My Bum Look Big?
- etc.

Oil shale Bro, we're all gonna be ok, it's gonna be cheap.. and the debt will be paid off as the U.S becomes the worlds leading oil exporter.. dude.. please, just tell me it's all gonna be ok!!  :\'( :\'(

Well, seeing as the rest of the world will be forked, I'll have to turn inward, to the metals!

Slayer will release their last album with Rick Rubin.. and it could be the last Slayer album.. I'll cry tears of blood.
Cannibal Corpse will release their 11th studio album, this has already been confirmed by Metal Blade.
Dr. Andre Young P.hd, better known as Dr Dre, will be releasing his last album (supposedly).
The new Metallica album has been tentatively slated for release in February. This is the big one, if it's anything like St. Anger they're done, victims of their own success, however, if it's really the masterpiece that 5 years of Rick Rubin directed effort should make it, then Metallica will be back baby!
Other kickass bands with releases scheduled for 2008 are - Children of Bodom, In Flames, Opeth, Deathangel, Soulfly, Voivod, The Streets, Tool, Social Distortion and Sepultura.

In theory, Chinese Democracy ought to be released this year.. in theory.. all I can say is, for the $13+ million it's cost to record so far, they better hope it sells a lot.

My prediction, it'll sell a shed load of copies, Slash will see the error of his ways, rejoin Axl and Matt Sorum (already having re-established his relationship with Axl) will join as well, giving the world what could be considered one of the best rock & roll bands of all time.. back again.

Elections...Democrats or Republicans, male or female, black or white...Does it really matter in the end?

Oh well, if you insist...Hillary Clinton (yeah, what do I know?)

Other than that...2008 will be pretty much like 2007.

Wow! Already 8 pages of posts. I was just about to post this topic too. Now that 2008 is just around the corner, here a my predictions:

- The writers strike will result in a lack of new episodes of shows, but it will be resolved so new seasons will just be slightly be delayed
- Hillary Clinton will get elected, for the same reason Bill did in 1992 (the bad economy, War in Iraq, etc.)
- Dr. Dre's "Detox" album will be a hit, and start a revival of early 90's gangsta rap (his album will feature 50 Cent, Eminem, The Game, Snoop Dogg, and many others)
- Usher's new album is set for Spring '08 release
- Olympics in Beijing will be good
- Former Pussycat Dolls member Nicole (I can't spell her last name) is coming out with an album
- More of the dance/electro-pop styles (produced by Timbaland)
- It will be an overall great year (light at the end of the tunnel) in my personal life

I don't know enouch about anything except the music industry to make a prediction on. So here goes...

Hip-Hop wont die out. But people wont mind. Because the quality of hip-hop will get better. I equate the type of hip-hop that floods the charts today to disco. It was cool when it started and people really liked it for a while. But alot of people are now starting to get sick of it and just like disco evolved into synth-pop (something people liked), current hip-hop will do that same thing. I'm predicting a more fun, positive style of hip-hop that is even closer to R&B/soul than it is now.

I think Chris Brown and Rihanna will continue to shine. They'll almost be like Michael Jackson and Madonna in 1983. Speaking of Michael Jackson and Madonna, both are planning album releases next year. It's plain and simple, Michael will succeed, Madonna will bomb. It's just a gut instinct but I feel like Madonna's new album will be like American Life and Michael's will be like Dangerous.

Infact, as far as Michael Jackson goes I think the next "era" of his career will be almost identical to his Dangerous era. A lot of people will buy the album and love the music and the videos will get lots of play and if he tours everyone will go to it, but as the same time people will still comment on his many eccentricities and loathe him for them. But it's not like that's going to matter to someone who is selling albums by the millions and pretty much saturating the market. I also hope that just like when Michael released Dangerous a very cool, new, original sounding album will knock it off #1 the way Nirvana's Nevermind did. Something that will start a musical revolution that people will enjoy.

Actually, come to think of it, it won't just be Michael Jackson's career the parallels 1991. The whole music industry will parellel 1991. Both rap and rock made big changes in 1991. Rap with the release of The Chronic and Rock with the release of Nevermind. I predict both rock and rap will make big changes in 2008. And probably because of 2 improtant and revolutionary albums released in both genres. No idea who the artists will be that will make those albums. But rock and rap are and always have been very similiar. Not musically but in the way they evolve. And as much as you don't want to hear it, Michael Jackson will be in the core of it.

Like it or not, the whole music industry gets excited when Michael Jackson is around. He does have a way of making people excited. Just having him in the charts again will make people excited about new music coming out and excited to see the latest charts. There's nearly no excitement in the industry anymore. People just don't care about new album release the way they used to. And being at #1 means nothing. Simply because no one is excited anymore to see who's at #1 in this week's charts. And there's no way millions of people are going to switch on MTV to see the world premier of a new music video these days. Michael can change that. You may love him or loathe him but everyone knows he's the best at creating hype and getting people pumped up to hear new music, see new videos. I think with his new album he'll make everyone want the music industry to thrive again.

I think that's the real problem at the moment. People don't want the music industry to thrive. Artist just want to get paid. Music fans want to get everything for free. So the fans aren't meeting the artists need so in turn they don't see the point in meeting the fans' needs and they release sub-par material that they are only releasing as part of contract and then because the fans don't want to buy it they milk as much money out of it as possible by letting phone companies make their music into ringtones and stuff. It's just becomes a mess. The artists and fans alike are not happy and the industry isn't thriving because of it, and no one seems to care. They aren't doing music to help the situation.  But someone like Michael Jackson could turn that around and just create that level of excitement that would make people want to buy music.

So in short. The industry will change big time because of MJ's hype which will make people excited which will make artists want to please them which will result in a high quality of music and inevitably a revolution in rap and rock.

2008 will be a turning point. For music at least.

ONE MAN can NOT change the face of music, no matter how badly you want it to be so. It's like saying Debbie Gibson is going to make a comeback. It AIN'T happening.

But it's cute that you're so dedicated.
